DeepMind creates 'transformative' map of human proteins drawn by artificial intelligence
AI research lab DeepMind has created the most comprehensive map of human proteins to date using artificial intelligence. The company, a subsidiary of Google-parent Alphabet, is releasing the data for free, with some scientists comparing the potential impact of the work to that of the Human Genome Project, an international effort to map every human gene.
[...] Previously, determining the structure of a protein relied on expensive and time-consuming experiments. But last year DeepMind showed it can produce accurate predictions of a protein's structure using AI software called AlphaFold. Now, the company is releasing hundreds of thousands of predictions made by the program to the public.
"I see this as the culmination of the entire 10-year-plus lifetime of DeepMind," company CEO and co-founder Demis Hassabis told The Verge. "From the beginning, this is what we set out to do: to make breakthroughs in AI, test that on games like Go and Atari, [and] apply that to real-world problems, to see if we can accelerate scientific breakthroughs and use those to benefit humanity."

Can somebody informed comment on how accurate these predictions are? The spinning example in TFA doesn't look particularly promising, but then I am not a molecular biologist.

Reread TFA and learned that I am an idiot (but you already knew that). Don't put models side-by-side if I'm not supposed to compare therm.

Pretty close to the error in experimental measurement (via X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM). Close enough to the experimental error that errors in a measurement were fixed after double-checking AlphaFold2's CASP14 results.

Yeah, well if racism and white supremacy had never been a thing that had led to the death of thousands (literally) of people of color, the quip would have been hysterically funny - like maybe Google AI mis-identifying Mitch McConnell as a turtle.
Sadly, we are passing through an "interesting" time in history, and I for one find anything that seems to legitimize racism as completely abhorrent. Then again, I have a prejudice because my nephew is half-black and living near Minneapolis, and I ever worry that he will not live to pass on the genes he has inherited from my mother and father - some of the best people I have ever known.
It's like making jokes about dead babies. The post almost earned a spam mod from me.

My take on it is that it is not saying anything about legitimizing racism and simply sticks a finger in the eye of machine learning in general and Google in particular. It just happens that the content involves race, but it would be just as amusing if there had been a big deal made about Google AI misidentifying skyscrapers for penises or something.

I'll just be up front and say had I not gotten the joke I would have complained. Okay, I'm too sensitive, but I also just recently watched an Alabama official call a colleague an inappropriate term... loudly, and on camera, oh and it hit her hard enough for her to break down. Why'd he do that? Allegedly his wife was quite comfortable using the term on FB and he was defending her. Again, I got the joke and didn't complain, but I DID think of this recent incident because of it, it's very fresh in people's minds right now. Maybe if the joke had been made a week or two from now... away from that story I mean this wouldn't have gotten as much attention.
Sometimes it's about the remark, sometimes its about its proximity to other events, oh and we still have big problems that need resolving like making our law enforcement less-murdery. There are people out there actively ruining it for everybody.

Unlike you, I have no enemies.
My sister's husband was such a racist, he got booted out of boot camp [failed the psych screening]. Broke his heart too, cause he had been dead-set on serving in Nam. Still, we broke bread, visited one another and exchanged gifts. You can pretend there is no racism and white supremacy, but I've sat with it at Christmas and Thanksgiving dinner. At the same time, this man was the most civic-minded individual I have ever met, dedicating nearly every moment of his free time to volunteer fire-fighting. He raised three amazing daughters and made sure they all were trained in the use of guns.
With a different sibling, my sister-in-law is the blackest, most beautiful southern belle you could ever imagine. My brother was the smartest in the family and if you sport a pace-maker or a stent, there is a good chance he had a hand in it's development. Still he managed to marry a woman of color who was even smarter than he was. You wish you had a wife as wonderful as his. She raised a son and two daughters - all of whom graduated with honors.
Everyone in this story is college educated - some with advanced degrees. Everyone is civil to one-another and God-fearing - vying with one another at doing good.
My BFF growing up was Latino, and my current bestie is a native of Palau. I have a jap daughter-in-law, a chilean daughter-in-law and an adoptive grandson half jap, half chinese. My step-mom is Jewish, my neighbor Iranian, my grand-mother Polish. There is no racial slur you can use that will not offend me in some way. Welcome to the world of humanity.
