New Zealand police arrest pair trying to enter Auckland with ‘large amount’ of KFC:
The men were arrested after allegedly trying to flee from police near the Auckland border. When their car was searched, police said they found a large quantity of KFC, as well as the cash and a number of empty ounce bags.
The arrest struck a chord with New Zealanders – especially Aucklanders, who have spent a month in a strict level four lockdown that does not allow restaurants to open or residents to order takeaway food.
[...] After the KFC arrest, a police spokesperson said “officers noticed a suspicious looking vehicle travelling on a gravel road, and upon seeing the police car, the vehicle did a U-turn and sped off trying to evade police.
[...] A breach of the Covid-19 Public Health Response Act can result in imprisonment for up to six months; or a fine of up to $4,000.
The men will appear in court for breaching the health order, and police said further charges were likely.

If all the cops found, is what is in the photo, that's not a "large amount" of KFC carry out. About half of that is what I typically bring home if I make a trip to KFC. So, maybe two households chipped in, intending to have a special meal. To put that into human terms, 4 to 6 adults, and/or 6 to 10 kids. Maybe three households?
That $100,000 suggests that KFC prices are pretty high in New Zealand. Maybe they had to bribe a store manager into opening the doors?

Sounds like the usual: what we found wasn't in itself illegal, but is usually associated with illegal activities.
I remember having my car searched - officer asked for registration and ID, registration was in the trunk, opened the trunk which he took as an invitation to reach in and pick up some film canisters I had filled with screws and other things. Of course some people keep drugs in film canisters, so I guess he thought he was getting lucky with a dumb one showing him illegal stuff - but the flashlight clearly showed no pills, only hardware. Asshat. Also goes to show how much his word against yours is a factor and how easily he could have "found" just about anything he brought to the scene "in my possession" if he felt like it.
Don't know about today - 30 years ago Coral Gables Florida had a law against "carrying burglar tools" - this means if the police witnessed you in Coral Gables with things like a screwdriver in your possession, they have legal grounds to arrest you. Exceptions for "legitimate uses" of course - basically translates to: we will stop you for walking while poor, and if we don't like your attitude during the stop, you're going in the can. Similar treatment for driving while poor, if they're in the mood.

Every once in a while you hear about an HPAI outbreak and there's typically some farmers trying to hide their poultry in the attic or something... I believe there was such a story around 2020-21 with H5N8? Regardless, that one died down around February in no small part thanks to the COVID-19 lockdowns.
Personally I've switched to egg white powder and whey for protein. Easier to stock between chicken shortages and reconstitutes well enough that I can't tell the difference even when making omelettes and such. Early in the first COVID lockdown I used to glue chicken breasts with transglutaminase and fill my freezer with rolls before sous vide'ing a few every day... But I run out at some point. Anyhow, lived a few weeks this past year on nothing but oats, frozen veggies and powders just fine so I'm not seeing myself joining any KFC smuggling ring any time soon... Still, if I ever run out of albumin, the neighbors better keep their dog indoors... That's all I'm saying.
