A pill to treat Covid-19: 'We're talking about a return to, maybe, normal life'
Within a day of testing positive for covid-19 in June, Miranda Kelly was sick enough to be scared. At 44, with diabetes and high blood pressure, Kelly, a certified nursing assistant, was having trouble breathing, symptoms serious enough to send her to the emergency room.
[....] But the Kellys, who live in Seattle, had agreed just after their diagnoses to join a clinical trial at the nearby Fred Hutch cancer research center that's part of an international effort to test an antiviral treatment that could halt covid early in its course.
By the next day, the couple were taking four pills, twice a day. Though they weren't told whether they had received an active medication or placebo, within a week, they said, their symptoms were better. Within two weeks, they had recovered.
"I don't know if we got the treatment, but I kind of feel like we did," Miranda Kelly said. "To have all these underlying conditions, I felt like the recovery was very quick."
[....] At least three promising antivirals for covid are being tested in clinical trials, with results expected as soon as late fall or winter, said Carl Dieffenbach, director of the Division of AIDS at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who is overseeing antiviral development.
"I think that we will have answers as to what these pills are capable of within the next several months," Dieffenbach said.
An effective treatment would be great for those who get covid despite the availability of, or even having received, vaccinations.

There are already effective treatments.. OTC and cheap, it's just it's not in any pharmaceutical or government's interest in promoting them.

How old are you? 1 study with a sample size of 84 people with a medium age of 85 in one place does not equal an "effective treatments.. OTC and cheap". Your cynicism seems to inhibit your ability to think rationally.

Contrast that study with the way New York handled COVID and nursing homes in the same time period. Stacking COVID victims in nursing homes proved detrimental to the residents of the nursing homes.

That is hardly "There are already effective treatments". It is a limited trial of 84 elderly patients and 64 staff, but you are quite prepared to ignore the many millions of vacinations that have been given so far and for which we have considerably more data.

It's exactly the same treatment as was used (reportedly with some success) by some docs prior to the advent of the vaccines. What's different is that they made a point of getting ahead of the symptoms, and that they had zero deaths among what we know to be the most vulnerable population. Even as anecdote that's worth noting, because even if we achieve 100% vaccine coverage, sometimes vaccines fail. And if we can keep symptoms under control with off-the-shelf meds, that beats hell out of the ICU.
And there is no Alkibiades to come back and save us from ourselves.

These goalposts keep shifting. First it was "Flatten the Curve." Then it was "Don't let the hospitals get overrun, we'll keep an eye on that." Then it was, "Once we have enough folks vaccinated." Then it was "Everyone must be vaccinated." Now its, "Once we have this pill!"
Our hospitals haven't had a surge since last December, yet the people I live around are wearing masks outside again. Depression is through the roof for all age groups. Murder rate is as high as it's been in 40 years. Debt has been blown out. Inflation is through the roof. Supply chains have collapsed. Drug overdoses accounted for 90k people last year. This is the world these people have brought you.
These people will never, ever feel safe again. The only thing we can do to help them is get them some mental health treatment. They've been severely affected by our media scaring the complete bejesus out of them. The final session is going to be group therapy where they all realize that when you put healthy adults into a room, COVID doesn't just spontaneously appear.
As far as most of the country is concerned, life is back to normal. COVID is something we have accepted is just another one of life's bumps in the road that 99.9% get past. My question to all of them though is, "Who promised you a long life on planet earth to begin with? Where does this expectation come from?"

We have gotten a vaccine in a year....yes the scientists / health providers etc are devising rule on the best knowledge of the day...

Yes, I agree that life is full of scarring events. What is clear is that people deal with these things differently. For me, this was the straw that broke the camels back. These politicians, who I helped vote in, have lost me. They aren't leading, they're hiding behind these medical folks who's only goal is that no one ever dies. It is a great goal for a doctor, but a politician's job isn't only to keep everyone safe. They also must help keep the world moving.
Now come on... This is what just grates on me is when folks say things like, "We didn't know how virulent or deadly or how we catch it initially..."
What planet do you folks live on? We've known since the dawn of science how people catch SARS viruses. It was never through handling mail or eating a peach with a trace of a virus on it, it is a respiratory virus. We've acted from day one like it is as virulent as it is with the Delta version, which makes sense to me.
It is completely crazy to me that we have the internet with troves of scientific data on this stuff, yet when people want to act smart, they go watch "experts" on "news"(opinion) shows, that tell you to hide in your homes until "We know more!" Thanks Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo for keeping us in the know and safe!
It was clear how deadly it was by June 2020. We haven't been "semi-blind" for over a year. These politicians though would like you to believe that. Just watch how they talk, "Well, there is a question, so, don't do anything until we know." These people are no smarter than the average person, and most get their information from CNN just like the rest of these folks.
When death rates haven't soared in places that are vaccinated because the vaccine works, and people are walking around in masks, telling everyone that doesn't think the same as them that they are worthless idiots, and tag everything as "us (blue) against them (red)" or vice versa, it is a sure sign that things have gone completely off the rails.
And to your point about the world wars. People didn't hide their heads in the sand, they sent their kids to fight.
Listen, I appreciate your points as they are fairly typical. I personally don't appreciate that we are being led from behind. These goalposts continue to shift no matter the reality on the ground. My neighbors and community who are close to 85% fully vaccinated, should not all be scared, yet they are. Who's fault is that?

just for reference measles is transmitted by contact ...so if virus scientists were cautious they had reason to in Dec 2019 or March 2020 even. So you should publish and apply to CDC if you had evidence in Dec 2019 that there was no way that covid-19 can be transmitted by surface or touch.

Give me a break. Look at the deaths. Deaths have been flat for months. Few of these hospitalizations are for serious cases, most are preventative. If you actually sit on the ground and talk to the folks, like I do, you'd understand this. These charts do not tell the whole story.
Our hospitals aren't full, nor even close. Look at those stats and post those for us. People aren't dying that are vaccinated.
This isn't about people ending up in the hospital or how many people get COVID. This is about how many people are dying, and that is flat.
Again, to my point, the goalposts have shifted. At first, it was about keeping hospitals from being overwhelmed. DONE. Then it was about keeping people from dying. DONE.
But yes, please point at a chart that doesn't tell us the full story and tell us why we should all hide inside for the rest of our lives. We're all listening.

I wqtched an animated webm the other dqy that perfectly illustrated the reality. A bunch of wiplld pigs on the river bank with a person throwing food towards them. The pigs squeeled with excitement diving after the food. Getting ever closer to the deeper part if the ruver. They relished being fed scraps beliving the Human to be awesome for giving them such bounty, totally unaware how they were being lured. Then out of nowhere a giant alligator jumoed out grabbing the closest porker and dragging it into the river. The pig squeeled in panic, but it was too late. See the human was feeding the alligator all along.
I am witnessing all around me wild hogs squeeling with delight all over social media, totally unaware. I wish my children were grown, so I could not care. But for them I will become the alligator.

No, your memory is shifting and projecting. The goalposts have not shifted in the way you said, and any shifts have been due to a changing circumstances (and mostly in a way that is good for you).
"Flatten the Curve," "Don't let the hospitals get overrun," and "Once we have enough folks vaccinated" are all the same thing. Flatten the curve was in order to prevent hospitals from getting overrun (do you remember the charts showing amount of available space there was in emergency rooms, and how many teeter to 0%?). And even back then, they said it was only until we had enough folks vaccinated, again to prevent hospitals from getting overrun.
"Everyone must be vaccinated." Nobody is saying this. Well, strawmen arguments from some political pundits may be pretending they are to score political points, but nobody is actually saying this as a matter of public policy. They are actually saying everybody "should" be vaccinated (not must), and that 70% of the population being vaccinated is the number that should be hit.
"Once we have this pill." I've not heard anybody saying that. However, if so, this would be an alternate condition to the 70% listed above.
The goal posts aren't shifting, except as represented by certain talking heads who want to discredit the science and public policy for whatever agenda they are trying to achieve.

We need all the medical treatments we can get for COVID, since it cannot be erradicated.
The vaxx nuts will shit on any treatment that isn't a vaccination. Why? Crazy groupthink. The thing is, some vaccinated people have been getting COVID as the protection from the vaccinations wears off. The vaxx authorities are now indicating they will want to demand frequent booster shots. (See Israel.) There is no end to it. This is why a treatment for those who have caught COVID is so important. BTW, catching COVID and recovering results in a much longer lasting immune response than taking the vaccines. With a proper treatment for infected people, the immunity of a population should be even better than trying to get everyone vaxxed.

We have an effective treatment for malaria, so that eases the ethical concerns of running human experiments exposing volunteers to malaria.
There are a very few human challenge experiments with COVID-19, and many many questions we could answer with more of them. If we could be confident that volunteers could be effectively treated after an exposure we could maybe run more experiments and get more data.
