Japanese police on Monday arrested a 43-year-old man for using artificial intelligence to effectively unblur pixelated porn videos, in the first criminal case in the country involving the exploitative use of the powerful technology.
Masayuki Nakamoto, who runs his own website in the southern prefecture of Hyogo, lifted images of porn stars from Japanese adult videos and doctored them with the same method used to create realistic face swaps in deepfake videos.
But instead of changing faces, Nakamoto used machine learning software to reconstruct the blurred parts of the video based on a large set of uncensored nudes and sold the content online. Penises and vaginas are pixelated in Japanese porn because an obscenity law forbids the explicit depictions of genitalia.
Nakamoto reportedly made about 11 million yen ($96,000) by selling over 10,000 manipulated videos, though he was arrested specifically for selling 10 fake photos at about 2,300 yen ($20) each.

That's what I was thinking--since he was selling it, presumably without the rights to do so, it's clearly a copyright case before you even get to obscenity issues, right?

More to the point, that rarity increases the value of japanese women, and encourages japanese men to seek sex from them in person. Why would a japanese man want a european woman when there is an ample supply of everything he could want from them available online, on demand. There is nothing left to be desired when you've seen all they have to offer.

It doesn't appear to be working as the population keeps declining. Perhaps they need to add more pixels! Or there are other issues at play beyond the pixels.
That said I don't really know why they went that pixel route to cover up the bits and bobs here and there. If it was just some kind of obscenity thing or if it was about morality or some "protection of the female form" (or whatever). If they had wanted to they could have just cut around it and never really showed it. Now it just looks weird with the extra pixel layer here and there showing up or being in print etc. They could have just done "softcore" porn all the way and shown mostly faces and have shots where genitals wasn't in view. That said perhaps one wonders about pornography in general if it really has to look like a medical examination, thanks no I don't need close up shots with that level of 5k detail of a bottom etc.

I remember looking this up recently, and supposedly it actually has to do with the U.S. occupation of Japan post-WWII. Since this was back in the 40s people were pretty uptight about this sort of thing, so it wound up in the Constitution and they've just never decided to change it since. Or something like that.

But is it really uncensoring? If they deepfake in parts of the image those might not be the real bits, they could be but they might not be. It might as well just be fitting parts. It is not really removing the pixelation is it? Isnt it just inserting parts from other images, preferably from the same or similar people to cover it up. So it is more like painting it over to create new "realistic" looking images.
