Spurred by a tweet from the mayor of Miami, New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams told followers Thursday that he plans to take his first three mayoral paychecks in Bitcoin.
"NYC is going to be the center of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing, innovative industries," Adams tweeted. "Just wait!
It's a high-profile embrace of digital currency at a time when regulators in the US, including in New York City, are heightening scrutiny of cryptocurrency exchanges. Last month, New York state Attorney General Letitia James asked two lending platforms to cease activities after winning a court order forcing the closure of the cryptocurrency exchange Coinseed.

DeBlasio was no improvement on Bloomberg. He was significantly worse in every area. People who ran non-profits in the city waxed nostalgic for Bloomberg because deBlasio screwed up the contracting process so badly. DeBlasio also reversed key policies that made New York one of the cleanest and safest cities in the country. His decision to shut down city schools at the start of the coronavirus has caused a mass exodus of families out of the area; One school two blocks away from our apartment in Brooklyn lost more than 30% of its students overnight and the school had to, accordingly, lay off 30% of its teachers. DeBlasio's shutdowns of hospitality and entertainment industries has slaughtered small businesses by the scads.
In fact, a person could go so far as to say that deBlasio has been the virus.
I don't have much of an opinion of Adams because borough presidents don't have any power and don't do a whole heck of a lot, but in the very few things he has said and done in my interactions with him while I was serving on a school board seemed reasonable and phlegmatic. Maybe he'll do better than deBlasio. But with the village idiot Brad Lander as Comptroller things don't look good for NYC.

That is true, but it is not an uninterrupted history. Giuliani cleaned up crime in the city, despite being a humorless schmuck. Bloomberg ran the city well, despite being a patrician who didn't like it when the plebs embarrassed him.
Eliot Spitzer did a good job tackling excess on Wall Street before he flamed out with the escort service. Preet Bharara did a decent job filling those shoes before Trump fired him.
NYC is a city of fiefdoms and rampant corruption that is primarily run by organized crime syndicates like Goldman Sachs and various real estate moguls.

deBlasio is certainly not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I might even go so far as to say he was on a par with "Ed Koch, your mayor!"
However, Bloomberg lost *any* respect I had for him when he conspired with the city council to blatantly disregard the *multiple* overwhelming votes of New Yorkers and give himself a third term.
I (as well as a majority of NYC voters) *repeatedly* voted to limit the Mayor to two terms.
Bloomberg ignored the democratic (small 'd') will of the people to allow himself to run for a third term, then spent $109 million to get himself re-elected. Even so, he *barely* beat Bill Thompson, 50.7% to 46,3%, who he outspent 11 to 1.
Bloomberg was (and I assume, still is) an anti-democratic (again, small 'd'), egocentric little Napoleon who deserves nothing but derision and scorn.
So yes. deBlasio wasn't a very good mayor. But Bloomberg is in a scumbag class all by himself.

The BTC pyramid absolutely dwarfs Bernie Madoff's operation, and it is posting these "gains" against the headwinds of mining costs and with relative transparency as to the vapid nature of the "commodity" being sold. The old saying attributed to P.T. Barnum needs to be updated: we're at a sucker born every second, and climbing.
I attribute it to timing. A generation of impressionable youths missed out on the internet bubble of the late 90s, went out into the world and got control of a bit of money, then latched on to Web 3.0 as their chance to hit it big. Since the pyramid is still building fast and furious the only "losers" they know are the ones who sold out too early, or never bought in.

My take is that there's no real problem here from the cryptocurrencies themselves, like usual, unless this guy starts throwing NYC public funds at crypto (rather than merely use it for a few token transactions). That's already a known problem with known solutions - such as throwing the bum out in the next election.

The problem is using a giant, deliberately placed, loophole in the way capital gains tax scale is tied to the income tax scale instead of the amount of capital gains.
It's tax avoidance, sadly, but it shouldn't work this way, and it should be tax evasion.

It begs the question, to what extent has cryptocurrency increased in price due to inflation. Heck, even some cryptocurrency has a degree of inflation.
The government releases its inflation stats but those inflation stats make no sense. A better measure of inflation is price increases in the housing market and rent since those expenses are a much more dominant measure of our expenditures. Who cares if the price of cheese went up by only 3 percent a year over the last ten years when cheese is only .1 percent of our annual expenditures.

That's not a reasonable measure of the rate of inflation by any means. Our dominant expenditure, rent/housing, has gone up by WAY more than that and that's a much more reasonable measure of inflation since it better measures the things that we actually spend a substantial amount of money on.
You claim that cryptocurrency is risky. So is the dollar. The dollar is a very risky investment, having your money sit in a bank and doing nothing is risky. You risk its value crashing relative to everything else (the things that are important that have intrinsic value like housing, food, etc...) as it has been.
Heck, the value of the dollar is dropping faster than people can accumulate value (ie: housing gets more expensive faster than the amount of money many people make per year. ie: If a house goes up in price 100K in a year and you only make 50K in that year you just moved backwards).

Joke's on him, every single transfer of BTC from him to anyone - no matter how many laundering steps it takes - is immutably and permanently stored in the BTC blockchain, replicated on millions of computers located in every country of the world. I'm surprised Eric Adams was elected mayor. Borough President to Mayor is not a common path. Usually they go from some other office like Public Advocate (an NYC position that is like an anti-Mayor), Comptroller, or DA.
As a Borough President, Adams was less of a buffoon than his predecessor Marty Markowitz, who colluded with real estate interests to shove the Barclays Stadium into the middle of downtown Brooklyn. As a former police detective Adams was calmer and more serious, but apart from that not particularly noteworthy.
