Jewelers, geologists, and microscopists agree: diamonds are forever. Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign are using microscopic nanodiamonds to calibrate and assess the performance of high-powered microscopes. Their longevity and durability make the tiny "first-aid kits" more than up to the task.
Advanced optical microscopy systems provide high-resolution views of the structure and function of cells and molecular compounds. Developing a stable fluorescent nanodiamond phantom promises wide-reaching applicability for microscopy research and quality control alike.
"There is potential that this is going to become a standard calibration tool in fluorescence microscopy worldwide. This sample is so convenient, and so easy to use, that it is hopefully going to make a large impact," said Mantas Žurauskas, an imaging research scientist for the GlaxoSmithKline Center for Optical Molecular Imaging at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, who led the research.
The team's paper, "Fluorescent nanodiamonds for characterization of nonlinear microscopy systems," was published in Photonics Research.
Fluorescent nanodiamonds are microscopic particles with small amounts of other chemical elements trapped inside as impurities. Žurauskas' research establishes their efficacy for producing stable microscopic images.
"[They] are unique in the way that they do not bleach," Žurauskas said. "Each time you look at them, they look the same. That's very rare in fluorescence microscopy."
Creating reliable calibration samples, called phantoms, is a challenge in biomedical microscopy imaging.
"There are changes each time you look at a fluorescent structure. As phantoms, I used fluorescent beads very often, these are like little beads filled with fluorescent dye. Each time you look at them, they are a bit dimmer. It's really this fluorescence decay that is a big enemy in fluorescence microscopy," Žurauskas said.

By expressing sadness, I was not meaning to imply that you were not accomplished. Rather what I see is that your contributions here are largely a waste of effort, and helpful to nearly no one, and your dogged repetition of said efforts suggest that you are almost but never quite reaching some elusive goal, like a turtle on its back unable to right itself. Then as a final public comment, let me try to address the topic at hand as I understand it.
The thing about good and evil, truth and falsehood. smart and stupid is that they are fuzzy concepts which depend on whose messages accord with one's experience and capacity. The best any one can do is to investigate the truth as best he can, determine his best action and do what seems right. I believe you are doing this. I also believe that folks choosing vaccination are doing this. It helps no one if we beat one another up and call each other names when we reach different conclusions. It simply muddies the water.
Perhaps this is why forgiveness, redemption and atonement are so important.
I personally pray a great deal that the holy spirit will aid me in discerning the truth and making right decisions. In this regard, after research and inquiry and prayer and meditation, I felt the holy spirit urging me to get vaccinated and later to get a booster, and I could find no uncontested data suggesting that I should not. So I followed those promptings.
I am content with my decision and likewise with the guidance I have given members of my family. Your dire warnings of doom and falling skies do not agree with the still small voice that guides me in my life. And if my choices are in error, then I pray that God may deliver me from whatever ill effects I have witlessly brought upon myself. God hath power over all things. Or to use Christian terminology, "No weapon formed against thee..." - including, perhaps, vaccine weapons - "...shall prosper".
One other thing I do believe - that it is better to be unified than it is to be right. This is a difficult one for me, because I often see inevitable outcomes long before others do, but over time, I've grown to appreciate the wisdom hidden in this precept. A unified people survives disasters much more successfully than a fragmented and factioned people.
So, good luck with your particular holy mission. As I've pointed out before to others, the probability of changing anybody's mind around here is effectively zero.

COVID-19 is a very nasty disease, which is why hundreds of thousands of people have died from it. I don't want anyone else to die from it, which is why I want people to get vaccinated. The evidence says that the vaccines are safe and very effective. I have loved ones refusing to get vaccinated because they believe the same misinformation you do. You've been very adamant about posting things about vaccines that just aren't true. I don't have any patience for anyone who would knowingly spread misinformation that harms others.
I am Roman Catholic. The Catholic Church has said that people can, in good conscience, receive COVID-19 vaccines. For that matter, they've said that being vaccinated will help prevent others from getting COVID-19, so getting vaccinated is actually a way of loving one another. Not only does the Catholic Church say being vaccinated is morally acceptable; they encourage it.
I've been on this site since Slashdot banned AC posting. Slashdot has changed so much in the past 20 years and I don't care for how the site is being run. I came here because SN reminded me of what Slashdot used to be, even if it's much smaller. This account has been eligible to moderate for two days, meaning I've been given 20 mod points. I used 17 of the 20 mod points to apply spam mods to you repeatedly posting the same thing, or for posting antisemitism. When you weren't spamming the same thing or posting antisemitism, I left your posts alone. I have not modded you with other accounts.
