The problems in the US haven't overly changed for a long time and assassinations were long used to suppress opposition. However, with the JFK assassination we got a pretty clear message from the MIC that messing with their profits and empire building will not be tolerated. Few have stuck their necks out since and I have a suspicion that more progressive politicians have been getting credible threats and are discouraged from more popular social policies by their peers. "Work from within the system" and "we must compromise" excuses that allow real change to be perpetually pushed back as we've seen from the DNC every election cycle.
Oh, please. You're going to pretend that progressives aren't invested in the MIC? Hey, I've got some valuable swampland in Florida you might be interested in! And, a couple nice bridges you can use for landscaping after you've bought the swampland!
