UK’s National Health Service has ordered the closure of a controversial gender clinic for children over a report revealing that some health staff felt pressured to take “an unquestioning affirmative approach” to children experiencing gender dysphoria.
The Tavistock Centre, in north London, is known as the Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS). Tavistock was founded in 1920 and originally focused on helping WWI shellshock victims. Since then it has grown to encompass a variety of services under the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust banner, with GIDS focusing on child gender issues. Since 1989 GIDS has treated 19,000 children with gender dysphoria (the feeling that one’s true identity is the opposite gender of their physical body).
The external report expressed concerns, among them the lack of knowledge about the effects of puberty blockers. Dr. Hilary Cass, the head of the review, wrote a letter to the head of NHS England on July 19:
…the most significant knowledge gaps are in relation to treatment with puberty blockers, and the lack of clarity about whether the rationale for prescription is as an initial part of a transition pathway or as a ‘pause’ to allow more time for decision making.
We do not fully understand the role of adolescent sex hormones in driving the development of both sexuality and gender identity through the early teen years, so by extension we cannot be sure about the impact of stopping these hormone surges on psychosexual and gender maturation. We therefore have no way of knowing whether, rather than buying time to make a decision, puberty blockers may disrupt that decision-making process.
It’s interesting to read a professional admitting that they do not know everything about gender dysphoria and transition because every time I hear an “expert” they sound as if there are no unanswered questions and that we have a full understanding of the effects of hormone blockers and surgery. Your primary source is portraying this as being very one sided. You are quoting entirely from one rather biased report (RedState). But even this source states (although you omitted to include it) :
However, if you actually read and understand the other sources, it is one particular centre (GIDS) that is being closed because of specific failings of staff in that one location, partly due to being overwhelmed by referrals. Certain medications were being prescribed without the full knowledge of their effects as an expedient measure. The 2 other, smaller centres (which are not just 'gender clinics') in the UK are to remain open and new regional centres are to be created. The UK is not stopping treatment - it is making the most appropriate treatment available for most of the country, manned by people who are qualified to do the task expected of them.
I am not sure, however, from where these qualified people will magically appear.

Your pretensions to "both sides" are completely transparent as long as Runaway1956 and Ethanol-fueled are free to spew their genocidal, bigoted antisemitic garbage. Fascism killed 6 million Jews less than a century ago. Antisemitism is not acceptable.

I am supporting the rights of transgender people to choose which path they wish to follow. Not sure where your criticism is coming from.
There is a severe shortage of medically qualified personnel in the UK from nurses all the way to the most specialised surgeons. That is the point I am making - there is no magic pot of new skilled personnel just waiting to be allocated to one of the new regional centres. They will have to come from elsewhere in an already overstretched organisation. Actions speak louder than words - the politicians can say what they want to do but they simply haven't got the resources to do it.
As for your other comments, I will get round to looking at the journals when I have the time. They are the least important part of my job.

No - you are wrong. I watch every comment as it arrives on a different view than you have - but I cannot see its full content. One click brings me directly to the comment in question. I don't see any other comments in the same story/journal.
There is yet another display which shows me how the community is moderating each comment but, again, I cannot see the comment itself. It is community moderation that draws my attention to that comment. Moderation however takes time to settle and that is when we review content otherwise we could be unfairly biased by an early moderation.
Finally, you do not know what action we are taking, if any, against any commentators. We do not announce it to the world, we simply act and the only person that needs to know is the one against whom we are acting. If they choose to make it public that is entirely their decision.

What was the purpose of all the show and community discussion? If it was simply for banning Aristarchus alone, then this is a bold-faced lie:

Aristarchus chose to make his temporary ban for sock-puppeting public - not us.
Only 1 person has ever been permanently banned from our community. We used a Meta story to explain our reasoning and decision. He then refused to accept his temporary ban and continued to disrupt other discussions. He was warned of the potential consequences but he also chose to ignore those warning too.
We do not publicise temporary bans.
You do not know what action - or inaction - we have taken or will take in the future.

We have moved all the AC crap-flooding posts to the journal discussions. There are very few on the main page now and those are quickly handled by community moderation. It had absolutely nothing to do with aristarchus - who was banned for doxxing, not for espousing philosophy or any particular political view. Those topics of discussion belongs here, in the journals.
It is true that there are fewer comments per story on the main page, but actually more intelligent conversation. The previous comment numbers were inflated with AC noise in the past. The site has increased the number of genuine accounts since the change was made, and the total comments and page hits are also slowly increasing in number. We have lost quite a few ACs but it is not possible to quantify how many. Any numbers that are claimed for ACs losses are simply guesses - no matter who makes them.
Those who wish to publish journals can also select whom they wish to comment on their discussions. I have no visibility of what choices they make so I cannot provide any further data.
What we seek to do now is to improve the variety and standard of submissions, and to encourage new members to join our community. This will not be something that can be fixed in the immediate future but will take time and effort.
