UK’s National Health Service has ordered the closure of a controversial gender clinic for children over a report revealing that some health staff felt pressured to take “an unquestioning affirmative approach” to children experiencing gender dysphoria.
The Tavistock Centre, in north London, is known as the Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS). Tavistock was founded in 1920 and originally focused on helping WWI shellshock victims. Since then it has grown to encompass a variety of services under the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust banner, with GIDS focusing on child gender issues. Since 1989 GIDS has treated 19,000 children with gender dysphoria (the feeling that one’s true identity is the opposite gender of their physical body).
The external report expressed concerns, among them the lack of knowledge about the effects of puberty blockers. Dr. Hilary Cass, the head of the review, wrote a letter to the head of NHS England on July 19:
…the most significant knowledge gaps are in relation to treatment with puberty blockers, and the lack of clarity about whether the rationale for prescription is as an initial part of a transition pathway or as a ‘pause’ to allow more time for decision making.
We do not fully understand the role of adolescent sex hormones in driving the development of both sexuality and gender identity through the early teen years, so by extension we cannot be sure about the impact of stopping these hormone surges on psychosexual and gender maturation. We therefore have no way of knowing whether, rather than buying time to make a decision, puberty blockers may disrupt that decision-making process.
It’s interesting to read a professional admitting that they do not know everything about gender dysphoria and transition because every time I hear an “expert” they sound as if there are no unanswered questions and that we have a full understanding of the effects of hormone blockers and surgery. We have moved all the AC crap-flooding posts to the journal discussions. There are very few on the main page now and those are quickly handled by community moderation. It had absolutely nothing to do with aristarchus - who was banned for doxxing, not for espousing philosophy or any particular political view. Those topics of discussion belongs here, in the journals.
It is true that there are fewer comments per story on the main page, but actually more intelligent conversation. The previous comment numbers were inflated with AC noise in the past. The site has increased the number of genuine accounts since the change was made, and the total comments and page hits are also slowly increasing in number. We have lost quite a few ACs but it is not possible to quantify how many. Any numbers that are claimed for ACs losses are simply guesses - no matter who makes them.
Those who wish to publish journals can also select whom they wish to comment on their discussions. I have no visibility of what choices they make so I cannot provide any further data.
What we seek to do now is to improve the variety and standard of submissions, and to encourage new members to join our community. This will not be something that can be fixed in the immediate future but will take time and effort.

Funny how conservatives operate, even the more reasonable ones like janrinok devolve into fascists when they feel they are righteous. What a sad development for SN as a community. Well, the non-white supremacist members of SN, runaeay, ef, vlm, and such are quite happy being allowed to spread hate here after being banned from just about every other place.

I see you're also having dementia problems. You've run out of excuses for defending the fascists, and your stodgy adherence to dismissing criticisms by leaning on ari doxxing runaway is a huge tell. The free speech excuse was better, but now that lie does not fly. SN admins censored at least a few journals, thousands of valid stories, and now rampant abuse of the spam mod against anyone suspected of being aristarchus. That is how fascism creeps in, set one example people can rally behind then use that as your excuse for everyrhing going forward. Someone criticizing janrinok? It really is obvious. The US nazis were very real and went into hiding after ww2 since public sentiment was very against them. They spent half a century recruiting, infiltrating organizations, and building political power. Now they are well funded with dedicated shills spreading the "both sides" and "free speech" bullshit to make their racist bullshit seem more innocent. Some admins allow racism and hate, only taking action when absolutely necessary to maintain the illusion they are not active fascists. It is a sad time in human history, hopefully the libertarians wake up before they put on those skull adorned hats again.
