Hungry for AI? New supercomputer contains 16 dinner-plate-size chips

On Monday, Cerebras Systems unveiled its 13.5 million core Andromeda AI supercomputer for deep learning, reports Reuters. According Cerebras, Andromeda delivers over one 1 exaflop (1 quintillion operations per second) of AI computational power at 16-bit half precision.

The Andromeda is itself a cluster of 16 Cerebras C-2 computers linked together. Each CS-2 contains one Wafer Scale Engine chip (often called "WSE-2"), which is currently the largest silicon chip ever made, at about 8.5-inches square and packed with 2.6 trillion transistors organized into 850,000 cores.

Cerebras built Andromeda at a data center in Santa Clara, California, for $35 million. It's tuned for applications like large language models and has already been in use for academic and commercial work. "Andromeda delivers near-perfect scaling via simple data parallelism across GPT-class large language models, including GPT-3, GPT-J and GPT-NeoX," writes Cerebras in a press release.

Your phone will be more powerful.

I've long said that I'll do the "smart home" thing when home electronics are powerful enough that I don't have to connect to Amazon's or Microsoft's or Google's supercomputers; after all, your phone is far more powerful than Cray's most powerful in 1972.

But alas, it won't happen in the money-worshiping USA, or likely anywhere else, as I lately found out. I bought a Ring doorbell button, and I can't store the video on my own equipment (I have more than 6 TB), it's stored on Amazon's servers, and after two weeks if I don't subscribe, I can't store them, so good luck getting Alexa or Siri to work without the Fascist Big Brother corporations watching (under Fascism, government is controlled by industry. Citizens United, anyone?).

I had this vision a couple of months ago of society as a corporate farm. Humans are like pigs being farmed for output. It's not a single "bad guy" doing it, it's the consequence of living in a rule-based system. Decades of smart people, and now computers, design our society - it's bigger than anyone can understand. You can fight it, for a while, but it's an inevitable consequence of our subconscious. Shitty societies eventually become democracies that eventually become humans farms corralled and chaperoned by corporations that act up to the limit of the law. Like pigs in cages given just enough sustenance to prevent them dying. Breeding sows must keep turning out litters. Young piglets must jump through turnstyles on command, or get the electro prod. Nice piggies.

Already plenty of kids (piggies) out there to keep the world going.

You can also choose to get off the train by not having kids, a choice I made for a variety of reasons...nearly 50 years ago.

I have plenty of fun with the kids my friends and relatives have, it's very rare that I wish I'd made a different choice.
