Reddit will allow users to upload NSFW images from desktop:

Reddit announced Thursday that it will now allow users to upload NSFW images from desktops in adult communities. The feature was already available on the social network's mobile app.

[...] "This now gives us feature parity with our mobile apps, which (as you know) already has this functionality. You must set your community to 18+ if your community's content will primarily be not safe for work (NSFW)," the company said.

Reddit's announcement comes days after Imgur said that the image hosting platform was banning explicit photos from May 15. At that time, the company said that explicit content formed a risk to Imgur's "community and its business". Banning this type of content would "protect the future of the Imgur community."

Many of Reddit's communities rely on Imgur's hosting services. However, the social network allowing native NSFW uploads through desktop might be the most logical solution going forward.

Image hosting is not the only hurdle for NSFW communities. Last month, when Reddit announced that it will start charging for its API, the company also said that it will limit access to mature content available through its API. This would directly impact the experience on third-party Reddit apps. In yesterday's announcement about desktop upload for NSFW images, a Reddit staff members said that the company is discussing how to navigate this situation.

I've seen ads from some recruiters for tech work in this space. How is it? My impression is the industry seems to be on the leading edge of technology in general. Is that accurate?

Fucking is higher up then food on the Maslows needs pyramid. Which never really made much sense to me personally but sure ... as a driver it might make sense but not as a survival mechanism.

Also probably a bit of an oversimplification, it's not that VHS was invented from nothing to consumer product in two years. There was prior products around for quite a long time before it was turned into the home consumer product. I don't know if there was any industrial microwave ovens around out of consumers reach.

          Maslow's hierarchy oversimplifies.

If you look at the 'fire triangle', you need fuel, heat, and an oxidising agent. None are more important than the other two, and lack of any one prevents the fire from burning. Needs can be in a similar relationship. Or even be in a cycle where A 'is more important' than B in a pairwise comparison, and B 'is more important' than C in a pairwise comparison, and finally C 'is more important than' A in a pairwise comparison. Such cyclical relationships/paradoxes [wikipedia.org] are well known. So the needs pyramid could well be (is) contextual. The ranking of sex is debated [wikipedia.org].

As a model, it is useful in that it generates interesting debate, and more understanding of the way humans (in general) operate; but like all models, it is incomplete, and certainly not 100% correct, In theory, needs at the bottom of the hierarchy should be satisfied before you can work on satisfying needs higher up the hierarchy: but there is evidence that the described needs can, and do, overlap. Nonetheless, it helps people to debate motivation in an ordered way, even if you disagree with the details of the model. It's a nice story, and like all stories, you don't know how much of it is a pleasant fiction, and how much is fact.

And vice versa: Something tells me that your employer isn't keen on having pictures of 5-year-olds about.
