SoylentNews is people

I thought it this would be fun everybody. I thought it might be interesting to compare desktop screenshots and see what other SoylentNews user interfaces look like. Tiling window manager or stacking? Desktop environment or not? Are you minimalist? What operating systems are you using?

What about your phone/tablet/phablet?

I'll start: Desktop and Cellular Phone.

This [imgur.com] is my desktop. With my computer name in the top right corner obviously redacted by some rudimentary image manipulation application.

You'll notice it's pretty much minimalist, for a number of reasons: First is that, since it's Linux, it can't do anything other than browse the web (which is why no porn is stored locally), take screenshots, serve as a pocket calculator, or kill its crashed applications; as you can see from the Panel above. The lone exception on the panel (that is, a useful application), is Transmission (a bittorrent client used for illegally stealing music and movies).

You would be able to see actual things happening (audio and video recording and editing, computer-algebra systems, 4-D CAD/CAM with fluid and heat-transfer simulation packages, Integrated Development Environments that don't look like they're stuck in the '70's, etc.) had I showed you all my Windows desktop, but I think that's a little much for this stage in our relationship.

          Okay, two things:

          • Is there really a way to legally steal something? And I don't mean governments retroactively changing laws...

Is there really a way to legally steal something?

Yes, if you are the government or friendly enough with the government (e.g. rich enough), you can simply make or have it made legal when *you* do it.

We hear all the time about dictators that have stolen billions from the people. Don't think that they broke any laws to do so. When it comes to dictators, that Judge Dredd "I am the law" quote holds true.

Well I'm sure many will be like me and not post screencaps as we've have to spend too long redacting shit. My desktop not only has my real name on my user folder but it also has my Steam ID and my real IP address as I have a network monitor to keep an eye on my LAN. Needless to say that isn't the kind of info that I would want to just broadcast to the world, not to mention "weird desktops" is really something only Linux guys bother with for the most part, Windows users change a few things but are mostly happy with the defaults.

TLDR? My desktop is Win 7 with a Vista Black taskbar but not gonna Doxx myself to show it.

I think I pass the test. There's not much on my desktop to identify me.

One "feature" of my desktop - anything minimized on my right screen is "invisible". There is no icon. Anything that I might not want seen in a screenshot is moved to the right screen, and minimized. To find it again, I click anywhere in open space, select "Windows" and click the hidden window to bring it into focus.

I'm a distro hopper, and I've found myself chasing the latest and greatest Enlightenment desktops. Sparky in this case, but Sabayon, Bluestar, and others have done great things with Enlightenment.

Oh - as a distro hopper, there really isn't much identifying stuff on any of my desktops. THAT stuff is pretty much kept stashed on a separate hard drive from the OS drive, not on my desktop. When I nuke and reinstall, everything is still where it was for the past years, no need to put it all onto the desktop!

Ok, but it sort of sounded like other distributions are for tinkering and playing with, while Ubuntu is what you use if you need to get work done, which I don't think is necessarily true. I don't know, I feel like I hear that a bit, "I used to play around with Linux distros, but then I just had to get things done so I use Ubuntu". No problem, but there are many distributions where one could just install the base set of programs needed to get-work-done™ and quit tinkering with the system. Unless you choose the LTS version, Ubuntu is actually quite fast moving. Anyway, not saying you meant any of that, just thinking aloud.

No... i installed ubuntu as my main desktop because it is what i'm used to (went from macmillan redhat 5.2(ish) to redhat 6 to debian, mandrake, etc.)
Then found Ubuntu (before it became the 'evil' desktop). Put it as my main work desktop while i dabbled.

Now, i just use it because there is no time for dabbling again. I have a netbook with Arch installed, but hate the small keyboard.

No time, too many distros to try.

IMHO - Ubuntu appeals MAINLY to those who fit one or more:
A: Don't really understand Linux, and Ubuntu "just works".
B: Need a long term supported OS, without the cost of Redhat support.
C: Are satisfied with "good enough".

There are probably as many reasons for sticking to Ubuntu, as there are Ubuntu users. I abandoned Ubuntu for almost the same reasons that I abandoned Gnome. I didn't like the road they were on, and I certainly didn't like the "my way or the highway" attitude. Linux users have always been a terribly independent bunch, so many of us just don't fit into the Ubuntu crowd. Can't call them sheeples, exactly, because they have thrown off the reign of Microsoft, but they don't value their independence as much as some of us do.

Ah, yes. The green theme is called "vt100", and you can get it under "Preferences->Homepage" on the left, in the themes menu at the top. As to why I use it, I'm simply a sucker for old looks ;) Well, okay, and my eyes are very light sensitive, so I try to view dark themes where possible. Not a fan of bright white... Amber would be perfect, as that would match my terminal, but I suppose I can't have everything exactly right...

I'm glad the vt100 trick helped! I agree, whoever came up with making everything black on white has clearly not used a terminal for any length of time. Black on white isn't equivalent to reading a book, it's equivalent to staring straight into the sun. If you want to take it a bit farther, I actually found a really neat Firefox (also supports Seamonkey!) extension today that allows you to define two color profiles. The first one is by beloved amber on black while the second is the completely default one that comes with Firefox. I can switch between them whenever I like with a shortcut, which allows me to keep all the ergonomic niceties of my colorscheme while still being able to quickly reset things for troublesome sites that rely on defining their own colorschemes. If you're interested, you can find it here [mozilla.org]. It appears to be very old ("Now supports Firefox 4!"), but still works perfectly on Firefox 35. Might be worth a try, I've really grown fond of it and I've only used it for a couple hours. I've spent years on creating the perfect desktop, and I believe I've now got it ;)

sometimes a link to a screen cap from my toshiba i5 lappy gets posted on IRC when something weird or awesome happens (usually SN or bot related), so some of you prolly already know i use a virtualbox with debian wheezy with xfce and some gnome junk thrown in for good measure (gedit prior to going full tard is awesome). the host OS is windows 7, but that doesn't get used for much except the odd game and delphi programming.

i like multi-monitor. even though lately i've been using my laptop on the couch with just the one screen, sometimes i plumb up one of the 23" from my desktop

the desktop is debian jessie with xfce. dropped tard version of gedit for mousepad on it. doesn't really get used much but having two screens does make it handy for web development.

there's also a server that runs debian but i mostly just ssh into that so a screen cap would be pretty boring.

i like wallpapers with not too much going on, but maybe a bit of abstract stuff going on. i used to have conky set up but don't bother anymore. conky is awesome for making a desktop look more nerdy

even though these sorts of stories aren't the main focus of SN, i think it would be good to see more of them pop up on weekends occasionally (esp if the queue is low). a plain ol' news site can be fairly impersonal so things like journals, polls, 'ask soylent's etc are all good to help develop a sense of community.

It is very nice to see some are still running WindowMaker. IMHO it is one of the best traditional window managers ever made. Personally, I never saw anything better with Fluxbox and the other *box that mostly took over everywhere.

WindowMaker runs faster than *box without using more resources. It also does everything you want and allows you both to use a graphical built in tool for configuring as well as text files. The only thing Fluxbox does which WindowMaker does not is tabbing random windows together. However, there is much WindowMaker can do which Fluxbox & Co does not do.

I could post a real screenshot but it would be excruciatingly boring. All my machines are the same, work, home, freebsd, legacy linux, whatever. With the obvious exception of the old winXP gaming drive thats used for nothing but steam games. This makes life considerably easier, always the same keys. I also have three machines with three monitors on the desk both at work and home. Most of the time, shell to the left, emacs (or a game or something) on the middle, and browser (or xpdf) on the right. AFS home means shared home dir on all machines at home.

Xmonad with trayer bar on the top and a xmobar. I usually have about 3 virt windows. In xmonad, with my xmonad.hs, alt-number switches my window. I don't do much with xmobar but burn about a pagefull of junk to display... the time. Lame, but its formatted the way I like it, whatever.

First window "alt-1" has urxvt with multiple tabs, usually each is SSHed into something "big" (or sometimes extremely small...) and all those sessions run tmux. So I got tabs in tabs in tabs. In urxvt my tabs are selected with function keys. In tmux I've bound the shift-arrow keys. So alt-number1 to select window, then f1-fsomething to select the machine I'm ssh'd into, then shift-arrow to wiggle from tmux window to tmux window.

Second window "alt-2" is usually emacs. Next story on SN will surely be "what emacs packages do you use" and I'd be dead without helm, flycheck, etc. I usually set up sshfs sessions to put other machines filesystems into my ~ so thats how I use emacs to work on remote things. Emacs runs locally, and doesn't know its accessing everything thru sshfs. I have little scripts to handle my sshfs sessions and key based auth and all that. I don't use my mouse with emacs, although I guess its possible. You don't want to know how many buffers I sometimes have open in emacs after a long day. Helm helps with that too. And projectile. And projectile-helm.

Third window "alt-3"is usually chromium. Sometimes FF (long story).

I got it off a magazine CD-ROM, then had to upgrade when upgrading to Leopard (or Snow Leopard)

I actually find it useful as a quick overview of whether or not an e-mail correspondent will be awake or no, and it lets me keep somewhat aware of what the weather is like for various relatives (at least whether or no it's cloudy).

      Nice.

I had never heard of this program. Thanks! Might have to give it a spin.

It seems to be a lot like Stardocks old Deskscapes which I run.

My desktop is whatever background-image the script pulled when starting X (well - currently from a list of one image, one of the stock debian images since about a decade ago).

I never really got this whole idea about icons so I have a setup without any icons, any software I use often is accessible via hotkey (Alt+F5 for urxvt for instance) or possible to pull up in text-menus (Altgr+F8, or rightclick) but the majority of the software is simply launched by typing it's name and parameters into an open terminal..

Somehow I find it a lot faster to just hit [Alt+F5] o p e r a [enter] [^D] than having to reach for the mouse, send everything to the background, drag the pointer over and click.. and that is for a program I open often, I dread to think about how it would be for the stuff I rarely open

It's a Reedit image from the Video Game crowd of PCs over Console gamers. I got it from a totally different source and found the history later. The side borders are there because the height just fits. The two black boxes on the top left and right are because of the monitor layout. 4 23" Acer monitors. One in the center, one rotated 180* above it, and two rotated 90* and 270* on either side. It gives me a piece-together 4k display :)

OK, that explains it very well. I read it in a different, more general, way -- technology, futurists, transhumanism vs/contrasted/above primitivism, fundamentalism, naturalism... ugh, too many -isms, sorry.

My Desktop at home has a number of different Backgrounds that it rotates through. I have a Tux Pengin Mascot Background, a demotivational Anime background, a background from the steam holiday sale (The X-Com Unknown Snow Globe.), an Anime background that's Win 7 themed, and maybe a couple others. Mostly, I just stick with the basics other than my rotating backgrounds. Would have Linux, if it were not for Games.

No screenshots, but I guess I'll post my setup.

I run Arch Linux. I use dwm to manage my windows; simple is best. I use the default systemd; YMMV. I run rsyslog alongside journald (best of both worlds). I make use of the user mode for systemd, allowing me to run and manage services as a user, such as gpg-agent, urxvtd, and mpd.

I use Chromium as my web browser, with uMatrix serving all of my blocking/filtering needs. My multi-tool is Emacs, with Evil for text editing, newsticker for RSS, and mu4e+isync (mbsync) for email (although I use vanilla Vim for light editing and on my servers).

I use Jack as my main audio server, with all of my applications routed into non-mixer as my audio mixer. Non-Jack applications get routed through ALSA -> PulseAudio -> Jack, but that's mainly for videos in Chromium because everything else I use supports Jack. My music player is mpd, for coding sessions, and I use cantata as a frontend when I need it.

I use urxvt as my terminal emulator, tmux as my muxer, zsh as my shell, ranger as my file manager, and Vim as my text editor (though I now program in Emacs using Evil). I have a lot of Python scripts to automate my workflow, some of which I have installed as custom packages using Arch Linux's stupid easy packaging via ABS and pacman.

Both Emacs and my shell environment are heavily configured; I believe in sharpening your tools.

At home, I still use Fedora 20 since I don't know if I will move to another distro or just stick with the recent systemd additions. My DE is Xfce4 and compositing is managed by compton (to avoid the tearing that happens when using xfwm4). Since I started using docks (five years ago) I can't live without having one (even though I always use alt+tab to switch between windows), as a launcher they work well. There's a lot of games depending on wine but they run surprisingly well, even though I haven't been playing too much lately. I should do a cleanup of desktop icons, several ones haven't been used for months. I don't know why but Russian support started to work weird in my fedora and now to tag songs I need to use AIMP3 or I'll end up with corrupted tags.

A screenshot won't do justice to my desktop, which uses Stardocks Deskscapes on Win8.1. A loop of Earth from the ISS missions 28 and 29 that is absolutely stunning. I have no icons at all on my desktop, and run everything from the taskbar which is located on the left side of my screen and hidden. So when idle it is absolutely beautiful to watch. Especially the Auroras.....stunning.

I was going to link to the download page until I realized there is no preview.

    Very relaxing live wallpaper.

I'd post a picture but I'm never on Soylent from home... ;)

I use Enlightenment, I've got six virtual desktops arranged in two rows of three. Never understood the point of virtual desktops until I got this laptop -- turns out they're GREAT when your system has the power to run more than one thing at a time! So I've got two rows of three and I use the top row for fun, bottom row for work. The top right (primary) has Firefox on the left half and a transparent terminal on the right (Conky lives under that terminal), second desktop is my secondary terminal and VirtualBox, third desktop is...let's just say private browsing. Across the bottom first I have Kate for development, then probably Chromium or a tertiary terminal depending on what I'm coding, and the last desktop is miscellaneous -- been holding The Gimp this week as I've been working on graphics for my personal website.

I've got this cool Arch Linux wallpaper with a double helix thing down the right side -- I think it was originally blue, but I've changed it to red. And I've got Conky set up overlaid on that. Inside the helix from the top down we've got a clock and uptime, then a set of rings showing CPU load and clock frequency, temperature, and a graph of load over time. Below that is a set of partial rings showing disk space on each hard drive, RAM, and battery. Bottom right corner is a network graph and instantaneous network speed readout, then my volume/brightness bars, and above that is readouts of my virtual datacenter (Proxmox server) -- CPU and memory utilization of each server, along with a readout of HTTP status codes from the log files and a readout of all active user sessions. Cyberpunk style security -- because there's nothing actually of value on that server.
