SoylentNews is people

I thought it this would be fun everybody. I thought it might be interesting to compare desktop screenshots and see what other SoylentNews user interfaces look like. Tiling window manager or stacking? Desktop environment or not? Are you minimalist? What operating systems are you using?

What about your phone/tablet/phablet?

I'll start: Desktop and Cellular Phone.

Actually, I rather like this idea. I always enjoy these kinds of things. I hope lots of people post real screenshots.

This [imgur.com] is my desktop. With my computer name in the top right corner obviously redacted by some rudimentary image manipulation application.

You'll notice it's pretty much minimalist, for a number of reasons: First is that, since it's Linux, it can't do anything other than browse the web (which is why no porn is stored locally), take screenshots, serve as a pocket calculator, or kill its crashed applications; as you can see from the Panel above. The lone exception on the panel (that is, a useful application), is Transmission (a bittorrent client used for illegally stealing music and movies).

You would be able to see actual things happening (audio and video recording and editing, computer-algebra systems, 4-D CAD/CAM with fluid and heat-transfer simulation packages, Integrated Development Environments that don't look like they're stuck in the '70's, etc.) had I showed you all my Windows desktop, but I think that's a little much for this stage in our relationship.

        Okay, two things:

        • Is there really a way to legally steal something? And I don't mean governments retroactively changing laws...
        • That doesn't sound like stealing (nor piracy on the high seas), but rather like copyright infringement. Let's not stoop to their level of namecalling ;)

Is there really a way to legally steal something?

Yes, if you are the government or friendly enough with the government (e.g. rich enough), you can simply make or have it made legal when *you* do it.

We hear all the time about dictators that have stolen billions from the people. Don't think that they broke any laws to do so. When it comes to dictators, that Judge Dredd "I am the law" quote holds true.

Well I'm sure many will be like me and not post screencaps as we've have to spend too long redacting shit. My desktop not only has my real name on my user folder but it also has my Steam ID and my real IP address as I have a network monitor to keep an eye on my LAN. Needless to say that isn't the kind of info that I would want to just broadcast to the world, not to mention "weird desktops" is really something only Linux guys bother with for the most part, Windows users change a few things but are mostly happy with the defaults.

TLDR? My desktop is Win 7 with a Vista Black taskbar but not gonna Doxx myself to show it.

Not all of us Hairy, I like a live desktop myself. (Win8.1) No icons, hidden taskbar, and a beautiful dream (what Stardock calls their live wallpapers) of Earth gracefully flowing beneath the ISS. (I posted caps further down so I don't want to post them in a reply.)

Of course, KSP spends more time on my desktop than my wallpaper does!

The trouble is, screenshot threads tend to end up as "who can find the coolest wallpaper" contests.
