Yea well that's kind of interesting right - cause the site has a voted on resolution to not allow a certain banned user to post here if I recall the history on this correctly. So it seems that user's post - of which I can see the content of the flagged comments - is being removed. I've gone deep into the archives of all that flagged content and not really seeing anything here that looks anything other than enforcing a community resolved decision. Feel free to give out any comment ids or posts that are made in error.

It was a staff vote, not a community vote, and certain biased parties probably coerced some weaker freeze peach types. Janrinok regularly reposts "The Decision", if you need to look it up.

It was a staff vote that involved 7 people - one of whom represented the Board at that time. It was fully explained to the community. As the material that was being investigated contained doxxing it could not be released verbatim to the community. To do so would actually have achieved aristarchus' aims far more efficiently than he himself had been able to do. A copy of the findings was sent to the email address that aristarchus had given as his contact details when he first joined the site.
aristarchus was given various options but he did not respond to any of them. He did not make any formal objection to the Board which was his right, nor did he request another review. In fact he commenced on a period of abuse which continues to this day.
There have been several attempts to rehabilitate aristarchus into the community made over the last few years. He has either rejected or ignored them. As he continues to abuse the site even now, including attempted doxxing in recent days, the ban will remain.

Aristarchus is fucking dead, you assholes! You killed him! Your ban broke his heart, and he died from it. That, and being some 2500 years old. Point is, flagging comments because of a supposed source, who is deceased, is really over the top. Kinda like exhuming a Pope, so we can excommunicate him, again. So to sum up, aristarchus is dead. He hasn't responded to email for months now.

Who is the only person who would know that aristarchus has not responded to email for 'months' now? Errr, let's see if we can work it out. Oh hang-on - that means that YOU are aristarchus. And you are obviously not dead.
You see, you remain stupid. What you say and do compromises who you are. It doesn't matter how many times you change your IP address - it is the content of your comments which tells us who you actually are. Yet you are still concerned with IP addresses and hashes.
You often post your comments at roughly the same times each day. The content doesn't really change. Your style of writing doesn't change. Your lies don't change. Your abuse of others doesn't change. Most other ACs actually have accounts. I don't know who they are when they post, but I can tell that they have an account. So from a community of over 250 people, only 4 - 5 are genuine ACs. And one of them will be you. It isn't difficult to identify you. Effectively, you are trying to hide by standing next to the pitcher in a baseball stadium rather than sitting quietly in the crowd.
But as you see it isn't a 'supposed' source. It is you, and you insist on telling everybody that it is you.

If you are not a techy that understands all the details of changing your IP after logging into an account, or any time one wishes to be AC, then it is perfectly acceptable for a volunteer to doxx the AC. They sure do frown on others doing the same, or even referencing the content someone else posts. Unless it is a site volunteer or accepted user. Strange code of conduct this site has, very illogical and unpredictable.

Well you are correct in parts.
Personal attacks against community members are against the rules. The AC being discussed is aristarchus, who is banned i.e. he is not a community member. Otherwise criticism of Trump, AOC or anyone else in the world would also be forbidden but that would be ludicrous for a discussion site. As I am sure you will have noted, they also are not community members.
And you are quite right, people can moderate as they see fit. Perhaps everybody who has read the comments in question agree with them?
Finally, the only way we can inform ACs when they are doing something wrong - which I don't think that they are in this case - is to make a comment. You have just done that. That will save anyone else having to do it.

How would a spoiler tag protect against doxxing, or links to CSAM (we have received them in the past)? Anyone could still read the material that potentially places a person at risk. The most recent doxxing occurred only a few days ago. Just because some information has been compromised in the past doesn't mean that the information is now no longer considered doxxing.
Once we know how the flagging will be employed I can look at how the community can have full visibility of the flagged material - but only where that does not permit the content to be published when there is a requirement to remove it. And I have said all this before so why is it necessary to repeat it again?

Well we use normal investigative techniques to assign attribution to submissions. We have a great deal of information and correlation and the tools available make this a relatively quick and effective task.

I'd like to say these are very childish comments, but they are also quite heavy satire. Burning witches? Pretty old school. Totally agreed those are worth flagging as disruptive. One problem is enforcing rules upon subjective content and context, while allowing other situations which are functionally identical.
When do false positives, discrimination, become worth it? What sigma delta might ruin your life when "the computer said no."

Sure, but there have been mistakes and I was specifically bringing up automated methods. The world is increasingly handing responsibility to AI systems and at some point something bad will happen and people will shrug and blame the computer. It will be 10x worse than corporate BS.
As for your exact point there have been users that were falsely accused and the defense was it sounded like a banned user. That is subjective content discrimination and referring to a banned user shows how easily bias can enter the equation.
My point was more about society and how allowing AI to make these subjective decisions makes a black box method of discrimination that allows malicious abuse to be blamed on software "bugs." The banned user situation here is just an example of how subjective decisions will have errors even with a human making the calls, and I wanted to tie that into a larger point about the perils of automated moderation of humans.

You have used this technique several times before. You dox a name in one post, part of the address in another, a State or Country in another etc. Then when all the information has been passed, the final one is often incitement to some form of abuse or threat to the person you are doxxing.

Your entire argument is a reductio ad absurdum that deliberately conflates an ontological problem (is this real?) with a pragmatic one (how must we act?).
You are placing an impossible epistemic burden on operators, demanding they be omniscient polymaths who can instantly discern veridical data from fictional trivia across all global cultures. Your "well-known" examples are merely artifacts of your own cultural priors.
The only prudent and scalable rule is simple: if a post is prima facie doxxing, it is treated as such. The operator's duty is not to become a scholastic debating the reality of your data, but to act prophylactically-at no detriment to any legitimate discourse. Newer systems that rely on "AI" to process tickets may eventually be able to filter out this BS but for now they, and humans, have difficulty telling the difference between a real statement and one of pure fantasy.
Your human brain bolstered by your memories and life experience grant you the ability to tell this is not real. Great. The address given here appears to be real. No, I don't know who lives at 1150 W Addison and a quick internet search offers no answers. If this is a satirical reference then it falls flat.
No, we're not there yet. Really. We're not. The current generation of LLM / AI tech may help but until we can definitively tell fantasy from reality and have a reliable method for problem investigation in real time we are stuck with what we have. Humans. Fallible humans. People capable of taking facts literally and not recognising humor intermeshed with reality. So no, keep it in your pants, don't post stuff that looks real, and be nice.

Different AC, but I'm not convinced it has been automated. I've dealt with automated bots of all kinds and they don't behave the way that poster seems to act from the information I have available. I think the manual posting, along with making many posts easy to identify, is a part of the ritual behavior. Otherwise, sheer annoyance would be easier to achieve and more effective using other means.

The double standards, privacy violations, and outright lies from an administrator over the last few years have me pissed off. When I first ran into censorship it was justified as "sounding like ///a banned user///" which belies "moderating based on content" since I was not the banned user and that was the only justification. Since then the narrative has been updated, and my own honesty used against me. These are not good things and promote a "thought crime" environment. The "personal attacks" justification is also violated routinely by other users without consequence, though we are assured consequences occur behind the scenes.
I sort of believe it since the blatant racism and calls for genocide are not frequently repeated these days, but calling out such viilations of site rules has become a violation of site rules.
These are issues the site should address. However, the realuty is the future of discussions is in the fediverse where one group is unable to censor completely. If this site is to stay relevant then a higher standard of management is required. Same reason the death penalty is widely rejected, false positives are toxic and destroy trust in the system.
All that said, quite recently I have not been targeted for harrassment beyond downmods from overly sensitive individuals that do not or choose not to know the facts.

You have raised numerous complaints (or more correctly the same complaint numerous times) in lots of different journals. You are now doing it again but this time you have been asked for your views. But you are also complaining in other journals at the same time. That is what you are moderated for. Not for a mistaken identity. Not because I think you are someone else. But because you are YOU - and YOU keep doing this in various journals. Please read the site rules regarding repetitious and off-topic comments (hint: they are Spam)
You being angry does not change anything on this site. Proposing changes to the site rules that you dislike might help. Sending a formal complaint to the Board might get the changes that you seek initiated. Offering to help the site in a more practical manner by stepping up and doing something useful would certainly help. But you refuse to do any of these things because you fear something that I cannot identify.
The world is not a perfect place. Complaining about it will not change anything. You should be the change that you seek.

There is still a legal requirement to remove any material that the relevant government has said is unacceptable. To imagine that the fediverse is different is a flaw in your logic. The FBI have seized and closed down fediverse servers (some outside of the US) for making available illegal material. For small servers (perhaps such as ours) the task falls upon the instance manager. Would you want that task? Would you volunteer for it?
Fediverse instances can, and must, have a means of deleting material and accounts.

The last on this list is because you shared an account (against site rules) for the express purpose of targeting those from the right wing who expressed their views. The account had a name that was designed to hide the abuse. You were using the SAME account as another user, whom you claim you cannot identify nor can you prove how you came by the account. You, by coincidence or design, have often used the same IP addresses, and appeared online at the same times as each other. You have targeted the site staff, just as the other user has regularly done. You now wish to claim responsibility for selected comments and moderations made by that account, but not for others which do not show you in a good light. You have admitted this on this site in public. You also claim that you were misidentified while operating that account. You seem to forget that moderations have to be done by a logged-in account - the account name is associated with each moderation. We know when you moderated, who you moderated, how you moderated them and which connection you used to do so. We know when you were online.
There is a price associated with being an AC. If you walk like a duck, and quack like a duck, people will think that you are a duck. Get an account. The 'problem' that you perceive only occurs with a couple of anonymous posts in journals.

Go ahead - tell them where to find preferred site. And can people comment without having to create any account whatsoever? The last time I tried a fediverse site I had to create an account. Are there rules that people must follow and, if so, how are they better than other sites, including our own?
How does it handle spam or abuse? Does it allow people to express different political views from yourself, without fear of retaliation? What happens to accounts that promote genocide, or publish CSAM, or advertising for prostitution, or post in languages that you do not speak? Or are you just benefitting from somebody else's efforts? What happens when such material arrives from another fediverse instance? How would you, presumably as an experienced instance manager, address these problems?
When we discussed that topic here a few years ago, how did you contribute to it? Did you offer your specialist knowledge and experience?
If your chosen site is successful, why do you even comment here? What does this site provide that your own chosen site does not? Why bother if there are better options elsewhere?
We offer a variety of stories everyday. The main pages are full of intelligent discussions about genuine topics going back over a decade or more. There is insightfulness, specialist knowledge, even humour on occasion. It is a repository of information if you know how to use a search function.
I would be pleased if others stepped forward to relieve me of the task. I have personal reasons for wishing someone to do so. But nobody has volunteered. I can handover my responsibilities to somebody else who can run the site better than I can, I am sure. Here is your opportunity to show me my failings by doing the task far better than you think I am doing it.
Prove me wrong, either by volunteering to help or by walking away from the site in disgust for something better elsewhere. But, to be honest, I don't think that you will do either. It is much easier to complain continually, isn't it?

Your journal was posted for meta discussions, you do not get to set limits after the fact. Once again the arbitrary and hypocritical management of the site demonstrates the bias and abusive tyranny. Yes that sounds a bit hyperbolic, still true.
I've watched this same pattern of abusive nerds with a superiority complex many times and it is the worst with computer science buffs. I'm glad the site has attempted some better moderation of the toxic trolls, many of whom have left when the freeze peaches took their favorite toys away, but again the rules are applied haphazardly and with much bias. Story submissions are highly selective while allowing some real duds through, often with a certain bent.
These are simple facts. Sadly most users do not run into these issues so they believe it is just trolling. The same old problem with being too far off the normal distribution, or pushing back against the minor tyrannies of a discussion site. I for one am stupefied that TMB was the more principled one.

My point was not to set limits on meta-discussion. It was to observe that this specific thread was hijacked from its original topic. Productive conversation requires focus. When new, unrelated issues are raised, they derail the discussion at hand.
You are raising several serious concerns ("arbitrary... management," "haphazard... bias," "selective" submissions), but you are presenting them as "simple facts" when they are, so far, unsupported assertions.
Assertions are not a basis for discussion. Evidence is.
Instead of "rules are applied haphazardly," provide specific examples. Which rule? When and how was it applied with bias?
Instead of "Story submissions are highly selective," which submissions demonstrate this "bent"? What was accepted that you disagree with? What was rejected that you feel should have run?
Without specifics, these claims cannot be addressed; they are just noise. I cannot read between the lines to guess at the specific problem you are trying to highlight.
You mentioned TMB. That is the key point. TMB, regardless of his position, could articulate his thoughts and engage in earnest discussion.
Raging against "minor tyrannies" with broad, hyperbolic labels ("abusive nerds," "tyranny") is not productive. It doesn't foster change; it just invites conflict.
If you have legitimate points, lay them out. Provide the reasoning, the logic, and the examples. That is how you start a fruitful conversation.

So here we have janrinok spam modding non-spam that was invited by your journal for any meta discussion. He then makes the defense "If you walk like a duck, and quack like a duck, people will think that you are a duck" and refuses to correct the abusive spam mods that are only allowed for a banned user. The OP was criticizing this pattern of abuse that I have stopped bringing up as the abuse became less frequent, giving janrinok a chance to change. I wanted to test out your journal's invitation for discussion. The results and janrinok's excuses speak for themselves.
I have considered volunteering before. What stops me is the lack of transparency for a variety of matters, and the fact that two vocal users started training to become editors then mysteriously stopped. Now janrinok says posts are not ideologically modded and that he can tell which comments are from a banned user, but in this case he knew it was not them.
Since you invited any discussion my OP broke no rules. If you cannot resolve these issues and restore trust, which has been broken for other named users as well, then the site will remain a turd that allows ideological bias while claiming otherwise. The hypocritical enforcement of rules where janrinok and others get to make personal attacks while putting their thumb on the scale of community moderation is another part of the problem The more paranoid concern is that the banned user was a setup specifically to allow such bias. I really hope the nerds round here are genuine and not some losers trying to manipulate society while surveilling people with the false promise of anonymous posting, part of the transparency mentioned before.

There is no mystery in volunteers not wanting to edit. Normal boring life reasons and in ability to dedicate what is needed to the task - unless you have a particular editor or person in mind - these were the ones I am aware of.
I can see the flagged comments, I am willing to post them in complete form when requested, and you will not see any hypocrisy in what gets flagged out. It's quite boring really and its the same non-sense over and over.
I welcome any examples otherwise and I want to find them where a comment was flagged and its content was ideologically in conflict with the flagged user - in a hypocritical manner - and wasn't in line with the rules of moderation on the site. I understand the desire for not flagging content - I don't particularly have a problem with aristarchus or similar posts - outside of a few instances of legally actionable content. I'd vote to unban and get rid of flagging outside of the literal doxxx/csam/illegal content. Just my 2c on that.

How many times does someone have to promote political genocide and support terrorism before some folks decide participating on a site may be dangerous? It is similar to the rightwing militias hanging around voting locations to intimidate voters. When does the "not illegal" speech become "silencing others"? What happened to the days when "words can't hurt you snowflake"?
You have told people to leave. An admin telling people to fuck off, albeit more politely, is much more silencing than a random AC without access to more detailed information. I understand your liunts, I understand most spam mods and flagging, I do not understand the tolerance for your blatant hypocrisy and lies, except that people don't realize you have those traits

You are going round and round in the same arguments, and in particular with a post that occurred over 4 years ago. EVERYBODY can express their opinion. If you don't like it then ARGUE your case against whatever is said. This is a discussion site - not somewhere for you to keep complaining over something that is well in the past.
You are the snowflake - you cannot let one particular comment alone. It was wrong and his statement was ridiculed and contested by numerous posts. Nevertheless he is entitled to an opinion and he can state it if he wishes.
The current activities in the US are wrong in my opinion and it seems also in yours - so get outside and change it. This is NOT the place for making your own political stand in everyone else's journals. I haven't told anyone to leave. But you have that option open to you if you don't like hearing other peoples' views. It is your own personal choice.
Where I have made mistakes I have apologised publicly. I have no problem with doing that. You do enough character assassination of others to keep this site topped up - I have no need to do any more. You have repeatedly criticised Runaway. Why? Didn't you say it correctly the first time? Why do you keep dragging up one single example every time you lose your temper.
You shared an account. You did those things that the comments stated. You have admitted the moderations which have the account name next to each one. But if your story is true then there is absolutely nothing you can produce to prove it. In my opinion parts of it are not even credible. It is also in the past. I have told you that if you wish to comment on-topic any any of the discussions I have no problem with you remaining on this site.
If you want to lecture people then get a job in a school, college or university. This is a community site - you can be part of the community or you can choose to go elsewhere.

I am posting this as myself - not as a site administrator.
I am older than you. I do not wish to forget the Nazis. I lost several family members during that war. I have also spent my life in the military fighting against the sort of thing that you are objecting to. I have seen first hand man's cruelty to his fellow man. I have also seen what discrimination against race and religion can do. I have personally witnessed far more terrible things that the current situation in the US can eventually lead to. Prison camps, rape, torture, mutilation, the erasure of entire towns and villages, the mass graves of thousands of people. I have seen the fear in people's eyes and the look of terror on children's faces. I will not forget what I have seen, nor will I forget what I and others like me achieved by fighting against it. It is far from being a perfect world, but it is better than what it might have been.
This site is not the place for that battle. Go and fight it somewhere where you will actually achieve something. Leave your keyboard and go outside to help those who need it. Hiding on a techie discussion site behind your anonymity is wasting your time and preventing others from discussing interesting topics. You will eventually have to talk and listen to the other side, no matter which side you are currently on. Begin by analysing what they say to try to understand what their issues are. Engage them in discussion - exactly what this site is intended for.
Over half the votes collected during the last election appear to have supported your government. Go and address that problem instead of continually verbally insulting a handful of people on here. People with different views exist, and they always will. You, individually and as a country, will have to find a solution to the current problems and learn to live with each other again. Stop being a coward and begin to follow that path.
Show me one comment that you have posted on this site that attempts to find a solution rather than showing your fear of those who hold a different view to yourself. But don't you dare accuse me of protecting those you fear. If something similar happens here I am prepared and willing personally to fight against it again. Are you?

For a hot minute I believed their professed good intentions, but then their words and actions demonstrated the truth. Maybe they are useful idiots, who knows on the net these days. Hey you fixed it. Funny thing, content that should be there is gone. Even Runaway's infamous 50 million dead liberals is gone unless I missed one. Looks like now it is just him whining about 50 million illegals.
Even with the excuse of database backup errors losing multiple months this is not a good look. Thanks for remindimg me to check the search function, it has only reinforced the suspicion that fuckery does indeed go on here :)
Can't speak for anyone else, but all my efforts are to make this place better by reducing admin abuse and encouraging more transparency. Statements like yours again reinforce that there is a lot of narrative control while ostensibly supporting free speech.
I'll fuck off now, give you some time to build your paradise. When I check back in I hope there is less tolerance for manipulative genociders and more tolerance of criticism.

kolie saw the comment claiming that search did not work. It does for most people but perhaps you are an edge case. So he is now working on it to ensure that it will work for everyone - including ACs (and it already works for those ACs who have tried it).
All you can do is criticise him for investigating a problem. He is working in that area of code as we speak. And you are still complaining and making it sound as though kolie is trying to hide data or something. You are ungrateful to say the least.
It seems like you didn't like having your complaints called out. He wants you to give him more details. He cannot guess what problems you are perceiving. Now would be a good time for you to prove your case. You allege that there are so many examples, in which case it shouldn't take you more than a few minutes to present some of them.
People did moderate Runaway1956 adversely for his comments. There was a lot of subsequent discussion, almost all of it critical of what had been written. Nobody is going to go back and add another down-mod to a comment that is already 7 years old. What else do you expect? Why don't you trying engaging with him and discovering what he wants for the future?
We are tolerant of everyone. I defended aristarchus' right to express himself, and I will defend Runaway's right to do the same. I don't agree with either of them on many things. I'm not sure, but it seems that you want people removed from the site because you have a different political viewpoint from them. That isn't very 'free' speech in my opinion. If it is legal under US law then people can say it on this site.

FWIW, the search function is a heavy operation for the backend and storage even with a lot of the hard work done by Sphinx. I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't the first thing to start creaking under heavy load. In fact, UI tests often target search as their primary endpoint in many places that do automated tests for responsiveness because it is more sensitive to load conditions.
