My wife gave me a laptop one Christmas that ran FreeBSD perfectly for years. I got a new laptop intending to run FreeBSD on it, but the wifi card wasn't compatible. Void Linux is a good substitute. If I couldn't use Void, or some sort of Linux, I'd get hardware that would allow me to return to FreeBSD.

Sounds like a reasonable option. I've dabbled with *BSDs, but they have much worse hardware support than Linux. That's ignoring software support. When I last tested one of the *BSDs, it worked more or less for basic things. Though, if you wanted X thing, you were likely to need to compile a thing yourself. I don't want to compile every thing I want to function on my computer, thanks.
