Sounds like a reasonable option. I've dabbled with *BSDs, but they have much worse hardware support than Linux. That's ignoring software support. When I last tested one of the *BSDs, it worked more or less for basic things. Though, if you wanted X thing, you were likely to need to compile a thing yourself. I don't want to compile every thing I want to function on my computer, thanks.
