This ability already exists in the form of LiDAR survey stations, though the ones I've seen so far need to be mounted on stationary tripod for the duration of the scan. They look something like this [wikipedia.org].
This scanner is much smaller and looks handheld, though given that it needs 20 minutes to complete a scan, I wounder whether it can be hand-held during the scan or whether it needs to be stationary. Either way, the miniaturization is nice to see.
