Julien Voisin blogs:

Today, I updated my Firefox, and had a new icon on my toolbar: pocket. I took at quick look at the ToS and privacy policy; here is my tl;dr:

Read it Later, Inc. is collecting a lot of intimate information and is tracking you.

When you share something through Pocket with a friend, the emails contains spying material using malware-like techniques to track your friends.

They are sharing those information with trusted third parties (Could be anyone they are doing business with.).

The policy might change, and it's your responsibility to check Pocket's website to see if it has.

[...] The Pocket implementation is not an extension (while it was available as an extension), it's implemented in Firefox. You can not remove it, only disable it, by going in about:config, since this option is not available in the preferences menu.

What the hell is pocket? on Mozilla's site:

The Pocket for Firefox button lets you save web pages and videos to Pocket in just one click. Pocket strips away clutter and saves the page in a clean, distraction-free view and lets you access them on the go through the Pocket app. All you need is a free account, an Internet connection and the Pocket button.

I just noticed that my firefox was updated to 39.0 even though i did not update it myself, atleast not intentionally. If they did that, then i'm removing this shit immediately. FUCK!

    Windows?

Go to the start menu and type in "add remove", go to "Add or remove programs" and find "Mozilla update service" and uninstall that trash.

When you install Firefox, on its installer stub's first page there's an "options" thing that you should always make sure to click on to disable the update service and IIRC some telemetry gathering trash.

I had that update thingy telling me there's a new version and i'm pretty damn sure that i clicked 'tell me later' every time. Now i see it's 39.0. But like i put in another post, it's not EME free version anymore. I had EME free version before, so the update just took away my choise too.

Fuck this. First thing is to downgrade, second is to start looking for something else.

That, and never go to help/about. It will automatically pull an update. I forget if it is kind enough to tell you what you had prior to forcing new changes upon you.

I switched to Pale Moon after trying a few alternatives. I otherwise have FF still installed, but I am using the 24.x ESR version. There are few things out there that do not work in the browser, despite all the doom and gloom some sites announce (You're in an outdated browser!") The verison is from Dec 2013 I think -- this is not ancient. My life hasn't changed so much I need to be on version 39...

Pale Moon has been incredibly reliable and there are forks to work on older 32 bit OSes as well (XP/2003 and atom processors). It works great on systems that have little CPU power--little being a relative term, as it runs OK on some pentium 3/pentium 4 hardware I have that provide services I haven't replaced with a raspberry pi yet...

It's not perfect and I don't claim it is; there will probably always be a need to have Lynx installed (or to set the user agent to it).

Man, am I glad that I'm on Linux where this shit is simply impossible. Separate root/user accounts FTW!

          "Separate root/user accounts FTW!"

I have multiple instances of Firefox, and muliple profiles. Root only knows about SOME of those instances. Nightly, for instance, runs out of a folder in my home folder. I haven't used Nightly in quite a long while, and I suspect that it's hung up at v 35 or 36. Nightly never asks if you want to update - it just pulls the update, installs it, then informs you that it wants to be restarted for updates to take effect. Ice Weasel won't update unless/until root authorizes it.

Pale Moon, on the other hand, sits quietly on my desktop, waiting for me to tell it what to do.
