Well the last time we heard about divers going into a fragile unique ecosystem it turned out the real plan was to deploy killer robots and kill a bunch of the sea life: https://soylentnews.org/article.pl?sid=15/09/08/151255 [soylentnews.org]
Why should I be responsible to determining in advance how these jerks will contaminate the million-year isolated environment under the ice? Isn't that THEIR responsibility?
Its not like this uncharted territory NEEDS to be invaded by humans venting (god knows what) directly into the water column.
Where are you getting the idea that this is an isolated environment? It's an ice shelf - a place where a glacier has slid beyond the coastline and is floating on the surface of the ocean. It's only (mostly) isolated from direct contact with the atmosphere, sea currents, fish, trash, and submarines can all freely travel beneath it.
It's isolated from exploration mainly because you can't get there by normal boat, and the water temperature is well below freezing.
or is it the Mantle Plume under Antarctica [soylentnews.org]?
I would be reluctant to blame one factor exclusively. A better question might be what proportion of Antarctic melting is due to Global Warming.

These days, every bit of research is somehow tied to global warming, no matter how absurd the connection. It seems there is the belief, true or not, that you can't get funding without a connection to global warming.
I'm sick of this agenda. I'm getting really disinclined to support funding science. OK scientists, how do you like THAT one, hmmm? You have a good short-term funding strategy going there it seems, but pissing off voters like me isn't going to go well long-term. Half of America hates you.
If you want that half of America to support funding for science, you could instead tie everything to military applications. Or, perhaps, you could just butt out of politics. That would be refreshing.
Nothing these days can just be about facts, there always has to be an agenda. Including science.
And I'm sure they're assuming the result ahead of time here, too. Their goal is to prove an effect, because they know there must be one.
Combine an attitude like that with the typical poor understanding of statistics and you will almost always find what you are looking for. Then you can use that result to further reinforce everyone's existing political belief and further taint future results. And bonus, anyone who even shows a hint of questioning this is a heretic!

Roughly all of it. Mantle plumes have always been there, and don't amount to much over an area as large as Antarctica, anyway.
