To be a Mac software consultant without actually owning a Mac has been awkward. I've been able to work recently because my client is lending me their equipment, but not all have been so cool.
I bought the 2.6 GHz Mac Mini for $699. I don't recall all that's in it as I picked it out a while ago. I also bought AppleCare for $99; in my experience, AppleCare is a good deal. Finally I bought a DisplayLink to VGA adapter so I can use it with my ancient crufty monitor.

After reading your personal saga all these years, I can't help but feel a bit invested. I'm glad things are looking up for your. Plus, this must mean you are making good progress, so I can't wait to find out who the mystery client is. Either way, I know I'll trust their driver a bit more than average.

this isn't the first time I've recovered from being down and out. In my early twenties I was a total wreck. I mean like hallucinating, and photographing my hallucinations. When the visions didn't turn up in the prints I knew it was due to my inexperience as a photographer.
Even so, I finished my physics degree. In some classes I did well, other classes were smoking radioactive craters. I had a good career for many years, and I got married.
My divorce has a lot to do with my illness getting worse. She was OK with crazy but not OK with totally insane. Really I don't blame her.
As for trusting my driver a little more... maybe that's not such a good idea.
The client is a fabless semiconductor firm, all our customers are manufacturers who integrate our chips into finished products.
It's nice to work here. Everyone treats me with a great deal of respect. I'm "The Mac Expert". I guess I do know a lot about Macs.

I'm late to the game on your personal narrative, and maybe there's reasons, but....
Can I ask your advice?

Have you looked in to these? Do any of these services meet your needs? I don't have a mac, but I do work on cross-platform solutions so many of the end stages of the pipelines require OSX for ipa builds, so I am currently wondering if any of these are worth it.
Thanks!

If you only need OS X for late-stage builds you might get by with a Hackintosh. That's a commodity PC that has OS X installed with the aid of a special installer package. Just google hackintosh.
I've had mixed results with them.

I'll second the hackintosh, though it requires time and patience for upkeep. Also you have to spend time on hardware research before you set out to put one together. No new Nvidia 10XX cards work right now due to lack of drivers. But if 'tech journalists' can set one up, anyone can.
Don't blame me, I voted for moose wang!
