Not to take potshots at the "other site" but damn.
I had mostly stopped checking it because the comment signal-to-noise ratio had become so bad. But now they're running these giant floating ads that cover half the comment-text so you can't actually read them anyway.

Weird. I'm on uBO too and see ads inside a div with id="stackcommerce-adwrap" another with the another div of class="stackcommerce-widget scw-horizontal col4" with ads inside them. Never seen it myself. And I'm just running AdBlock Plus.
The only ads I've seen are the Slashdot Deals and the pair of brown bordered ads that usually shows up about a third and two-thirds down the screen. Oh yeah, and a sponsored content by Taboola just above the Slashdot deals at the bottom. Pretty easy to ignore.
No floaters, videos or pop-ups on default setting.
I'll have to give Ublock a go, AdBlock isn't nearly as good as it used to be, I've just been too lazy to do anything about it since it still mostly works. I really don't mind a handful of static ads, but floaters, pop-ups, and autoplays are never welcome.

Adblockers are an _enabler_ for more intrusive ads. When the tech-savvy don't see them, the audience that still sees them gets filtered to those who indeed swallow that junk so the sites don't get to pay a price for that.
Also note the following: even with an adblocker you are supporting the site when visiting it. Not only are adblockers incapable of recognizing ads masqueragding as content, but even if they were, you'd still be yourself part of its virality, mindshare and content.
