Russian prosecutors requested a 3½ year prison sentence Friday for a blogger charged with inciting religious hatred for playing "Pokemon Go" in a church.
Prosecutors made the request as the trial of Ruslan Sokolovsky, 22, wrapped up in the city of Yekaterinburg. A judge said a verdict in the case would be issued May 11.
Sokolovsky posted a video on his blog showing him playing the smartphone game in a church built on the supposed spot where the last Russian tsar and his family were killed. He has been in detention since October.
He is charged with inciting religious hatred. It is the same offense that sent two women from the Pussy Riot punk collective to prison for two years in 2012.

The video looks to me like a misdemeanor trespass. A couple weeks of mowing grass and painting fences and assorted other "restitution" should cover the "offense". What the Russians have here is a Streisand effect. 3 1/2 years in prison isn't even a sane punishment for some smartassed kid playing video games in church.
Oh, what am I talking about. Little bastard was disrespectful toward God. Take him behind the woodshed and put a bullet in his neck.

Most churches don't give a fuck if someone walks in. Or stands around using a smartphone for a couple of minutes. He is being punished for publishing a political video. Orthodox Christianity obviously helps Putin out by giving the vodka and krokodil addled Russian people something to live for in their terrible country.

It is a lot more than that. The Russian Orthodox Church is a tool of the state. They rolled over for Putin and now he owns them. That's what Pussy Riot was protesting when they played a song in a cathedral in Moscow and subsequently got sent to the gulag.

Runaway says he's an agnostic. I've pressed him on this, and it turns out it specifically means he's the kind of unthinking self-centered yob who hasn't got the depth for actual theological study, rather than someone who's done a lot of comparative religion and come to the conclusion that he doesn't have enough information. But boy did he ever absorb the secular and ingroup memes from modern US Christianity.

Erm, use of the example of a smelly bum living in the middle of the church who tries to punch out anyone asking him to move or leave or clean up his "toilet area" is a simple illustration of a completely unobjectionable case for the owners of a church to charge someone with trespassing. The same is true with much less blatant examples.
