But the comments on the journal entry is under /comments.... so the same as everything else. Or would that be basically unreachable (without routing through the journal) except through an external link?

Good point. It's true that the comments can be gotten to via URLs like
https://soylentnews.org/comments.pl?noupdate=1&sid=20131&page=1&cid=529606#529606 [soylentnews.org]
and /comments.pl isn't mentioned in robots.txt. So yes, the comments could be crawled if such a link were created elsewhere on the site, or on another site. Another way they could be crawled would be if someone submitted such a link to a search engine.
