Harold White has been researching faster than light travel for NASA since 2010. While the technology is still mostly in the realm of science fiction, artist Mark Rademaker has created renderings that could potentially be a model.

White, head of NASA's Advanced Propulsion Team started with Star Trek's Enterprise, then worked with Mike Okuda to update the math and produce what could be a viable spacecraft.

I vaguely recall a short story I read somewhere where they were testing out the first 'warp' drive with a little trip out to Proxima Centauri. They arrived just as the star exploded. Working out the timing they discovered that it was caused by their fancy new drive, and then decided to take the slow way home worrying that they destroyed the Earth when they first left.
