My son has cerebral palsy which leaves him with very low fine finger and joint control.

(Quite) A few years back, we bought a Wii because we thought he'd be able to play games just by waving his arm around.
Wrong.
Too much of ALL games took clicking or trigger pulling, etc, so we have to help him if he has any chance of advancing the game.
Mario kart with a steering wheel is okay, but he can't react fast enough to keep up with the other cars (it's hard enough for this 50-ish year old, lol)

I saw a Sesame Street game for the Xbox Kinect.
The question is, would the Kinect be better for him? Are there games he could play just by waving his arms or making punch motions or just moving?

Thanks for any good advice anyone can give.

Yes, there are. I think the game that came with the first version was a collection of simple games using only the Kinect.

Go for turn-based rather than twitch games. Problem solved and shitheads with good reflexes and two brain cells don't post screencaps of themselves tea-bagging you.

I started playing civilization/civilization II when I was 7 or 8 and was endless fun until civilization IV came out. Sad that there are no new civ games but give IV a shot.

Unsure if your kid is old enough to appreciate them, but years of enjoyment. You could probably also try those keyboards where you organize keys wherever you want and program them to do different functions. I know a lot of games allow you to assign anything you want as the trigger mechanism.

Could also do something like modifying a wiimote to work more to his ability. For the trigger on the back superglue a longer peice of plastic or wood and turn it into a two finger pull, dont know if that would help though.

very low fine finger and joint control

More details please. I was reading up on this and I am unsure if I understand. Rate of speed moving fingers, is issue with just finger tips or whole finger. Is the issue speed and pressure or able to move with some quickness but not able to exert force? I was reading that these issues sometimes present differently.

In my mind i am wondering about a powerglove like setup. I use a g700s logitech mouse with like 10 programable keys. Using the board from one you could wire touch sensors inside of a glove or on a tabletop. If he can go fast enough you could negate the pressure issue. Combine the glove concept with the wiimote and you have directional pointing and ability to use four buttons with thumb/pointer/index/ring. I rule out pinky as when i move mine i would probably also trigger ring finger. Wiimote can be used on computers so might be able to make something work.

I guess stiff jointed and unable to easily move fingers independently? (Stiff jointed in ALL joints, fingers, wrist, elbows, knees, etc.)
Instead of pointing with a finger he points with his whole hand...
Just the inability to easily separate his fingers independently.....

Hard to explain: it makes his timing slow and awkward and fumbly, not smooth and fluid.

IE, you wouldn't want him doing your brain surgery....AT ALL!

Slowly (to keep from falling over) and awkwardly, with mis-steps and, probably, falling anyway.

I was unable to sleep for a couple hours last night as i considered how to build a powerglove with touch sensors to detect movement in fingers that would not require pressure. Maybe hook that up to a button. Ala powerglove.

In this case could make some sort of pad button for each foot for use when sitting. Like if trying to do like a NES controller make a giant plus pad that would rely on hand rocking to drive. Combine that with feet A and B and you have a NES controller?
