On my way back from some morning fishing, a question occurred to me and I thought I'd see if any of you know. Does the government shutdown mean the game wardens are off work? Wondering strictly out of concern for the wellbeing of those fine, upstanding individuals.

Shit, I'd be more concerned about d̶i̶s̶o̶b̶e̶y̶i̶n̶g̶ bag-limits. Shoot or catch anything that moves regardless of size or number, harvest the meat, bag it, freeze it, and have enough protein to last at least a few months straight. Taking a dually flatbed or U-haul out into the boonies may arouse some suspicion, though.

Around here and around the other two states I've lived in, the state is the one responsible for employing all the wardens - even the ones roaming around the national forests. We fortunately haven't fused state and federal yet so they'd still be working, at least around here. I have no idea if there are federal game wardens in other states though.

As far as I know, all the states have their own game commissions, and game wardens. The territories, possessions, and D.C. may be different, but I don't know why they would be.

IIRC all Native Americans are thereby automatically deputized as game wardens and given broad discretionary powers. Could be a blessing, could be a target.

I've been reading a little less than half the affected workers have been told not to report to work and that they will not receive any pay while the other half has been told to report to work and they still don't get any pay. But they might, if Congress agrees, get backpay for this period. No guarantees.

It's simple. Work in a 'non essential' services position for the fed, you make sure you can last a couple of months. Having an emergency fund is a basic financial tool [daveramsey.com] that should be employed by all. Moreso if needing it is a periodic near certainty.

There might be less patrolling of the interior of the park so poaching might be possible (though it's in winter with considerable snow). Haven't a clue.
