In 2012, Julian Assange moved into the Ecuadorian embassy in London.
Little known is that the Ecuadorian embassy next hired a private security firm -- the Spanish company UC Global -- to protect their famous guest agains spying activity by Her Majesty's police force, which all this time was patiently waiting outside with tea and cookies.
German public broadcasters Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) and NDR (Norddeutscher Rundfunk) now have managed to get their hands on confidential mails and video material belonging to UC Global (German language video).
Turns out that UC Global extensively deployed hidden cameras and microphones within the embassy. Everything was recorded: the IDs of every visitor to Assange, his doctor's visits and his talks with his psychiatrist, every move he made, or conversation he had: with American friends, journalists, his legal team and even Dana Rohrabacher (Rep California) allegedly dispatched there by President Trump himself.
Not wanting to overdo things, the UC Global team even fished a diaper of Assange's son out the trash bin, to compare DNA.
In the end though, their sense of duty had limitations -- and ended up in Spain's Audiencia Nacional court, with employees alleging they were sold out to do the CIA's bidding. The company's boss, a former special forces officer on leave of absence, was helpful enough to state both verbally and in writing to a number of his employees that, despite having been hired by the government of then-Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, he also worked “for the Americans.”
“We are playing in another league. This is the first division,”
he told his closest colleagues after attending a security fair in the US city of Las Vegas in 2015 where he supposedly made his first American contacts.
The latest UK court session for Assange, on Sept 11, was postponed because one of the lawyers for the US side has contracted covid. The Court at the Old Bailey has to decide by the end of this year whether Assange will be extradited to the United States, where he risks 175 years jail time.

Still, we really don't know what he has that keeps him locked up like this. I would hope a nice big data dump could render the case moot. Instead, I wonder who the real players are and what the real story is.

Funny that Woodward was the very first to produce evidence, actual tapes of the man admitting to a crime that resulted in thousands of deaths. And yet, there is still no effort in congress to press charges. They would rather patrol Twitter and Facebook for Russiagators. The whole game is bogus. And Trump will be handed another win.

Left-wing conspiracy theorists exist, but they are relatively rare. They are enormously outnumbered by right-wing conspiracy theorists. The right-wing mentality goes hand-in-hand with just making up bullshit (or reading and believing propaganda online) and then believing it means there is some sort of unfair conspiracy against you, and then ranting for days or weeks on end about it.

Oh yeah! Those emails! Yeah, they could be persecuting him over that. The whole thing is very partisan. I still think there's another reason they're keeping him on ice, and if he knows why, he should be singing like a bird. Deals are clearly being made.

The powerful can talk out one side of their mouths, praising the freedom of the press. At the same time, the powerful can crucify a member of the press who crosses them.
Assange well and truly fucked himself by going to the embassy when he needed help. He should have pulled a Snowden, and gone straight to Russia. China or North Korea might have worked. I don't know if there is any other place on earth where he would have been safe.
This whole fiasco just teaches contempt for American politicians and the "intel" communities. And, fuck the Five Eyes in their eyes, they all prostitute themselves to our corrupt systems.
Trump could redeem some of his stupid schitzls by pardoning both Assange and Snowden before leaving office.

Interesting, I haven't heard of "stupid schitzls" as an excuse for traitorous crimes and corruption.
For the current scandals we have Trump knowing that COVID-19 was more dangerous than the flu and spread through the air. Lying to the entire country only resulted in millions of people not taking the danger seriously and making the US the worst country regarding COVID-19. Bradley Manning was not and is not a journalist. Bradley Manning was never entitled to any considerations due a member of the press. Bradley Manning was bound by the same oath that every service member takes. Bradley Manning betrayed his oath, and he betrayed all other service members. Remember: legal/illegal and moral/immoral are two separate axes. People who don't understand this are a grave threat to civilization. And laws emerge from morals, as they are social technology themselves, so the close to orthogonal with morality laws become, the worse situation we find ourselves in.
Besides, someone can be right for the wrong reasons and by the wrong routes. You manage to pull that off once every couple of months, for example.

Been down THAT road many times. The journalists chose to embed themselves into an insurgent enemy unit. That unit was actively engaged in firing upon US troops when the helicopter fired on it. Want to try again? Journalists are routinely given courtesies at crime scenes not afforded to the public. Walk into any police department, and ask them for an interview, and you'll be politely asked to leave. An accredited journalist will get at least some kind of statement from the PR people, but not you. Visit the mayor's office expecting to get an interview. Try to snag an interview with any political candidate without press credentials, and see how far you get.
Government bends over backward to please the press, and even more so when the press is perceived as "friendly".
