A jarring new report from The Atlantic claims that the Trump campaign is discussing potential strategies to circumvent the results of the 2020 election, should Joe Biden defeat Donald Trump, by first alleging the existence of rampant fraud and then appointing electors in battleground states where Republicans maintain a legislative majority, whom Trump would ask to bypass the state’s popular vote and instead to choose electors loyal to the GOP and the sitting president.

The Atlantic bullshitting on one Trump report could well mean that they're bullshitting on another. Where is the evidence BTW for the present story? For example, there was a claim

The chairman of the Pennsylvania Republican Party says, on the record [theatlantic.com], that he has discussed appointing loyal electors with the Trump campaign: “It is one of the available legal options set forth in the Constitution.”

When I looked at the money quote in the link provided, I got:

In Pennsylvania, three Republican leaders told me they had already discussed the direct appointment of electors among themselves, and one said he had discussed it with Trump’s national campaign.

“I’ve mentioned it to them, and I hope they’re thinking about it too,” Lawrence Tabas, the Pennsylvania Republican Party’s chairman, told me. “I just don’t think this is the right time for me to be discussing those strategies and approaches, but [direct appointment of electors] is one of the options. It is one of the available legal options set forth in the Constitution.” He added that everyone’s preference is to get a swift and accurate count. “If the process, though, is flawed, and has significant flaws, our public may lose faith and confidence” in the election’s integrity.

It's a huge tell that the phrase which would make the statement as claimed was inserted by The Atlantic, not by the interviewee, Tabas. That's pretty yellow.

When "I've mentioned it to them" means you DIDN'T discuss it.

We only have The Atlantic's word that "it" as mentioned by Tabas is the same as "[direct appointment of electors]". You know, the part I bolded? That single inserted phrase is by far the most important part of the blurb. And it didn't come from the interviewee. Maybe that's just bad editing, but it's bad editing that conveniently furthers the The Atlantic's narrative. We don't know if the interviewee really meant that or the context of the quote.

Don't follow the nutjobs down that Orwell hole khallow.

Don't worry. I'm not following you down that hole. Again, I think it's telling that we have this pants-wetting hysteria about alleged illegal maneuvers by Trump, and the only evidence on the record (rather than by anonymous sources) is a statement by someone with the key bit of information inserted by The Atlantic.

Modern dictatorships pretend to be democratic, holding elections to disguise their regimes as legitimate while rigging those elections in their favor. The possible actions by Trump are those of a dictator. Authoritarian regimes tend to be the result of power being ceded over time by officials who were naive or complicit. If this happens in the US, only the latter explanation will apply.

We already have concentration camps in this country, run by ICE. There are allegations of forced hysterectomies [nytimes.com] at a facility in Georgia. There are allegations of toxic disinfectants being sprayed repeatedly [businessinsider.com.au] in ICE facilities, causing health problems to detainees. Toxic chemical agents have been used to put down protests at other facilities [theguardian.com], also causing harm to detainees. These allegations are in addition to the family separations and overcrowding at these facilities.

So far, Trump has shown little inclination to turn the might of the US military against other nations, but expanding military funding has been prioritized. So far, militarized police have been used inside US borders. However, the tendency to distance from allied democratic nations and withdraw into isolation raises concerns about the potential for future abuses of military power, particularly with Congress ceding its oversight powers.

Add in the growth white supremacy and identity Christianity and it's easy to see how more minority groups could lose their rights and freedoms on the basis of governing forces that seek to impose their will through tyranny. In some respects, this is more like modern fundamentalist regimes that seek to impose their religious beliefs as opposed to the desire of Nazi Germany to control religious entities. Nonetheless, it is easy to see how the end result of targeting ethnic and religious minorities could result.

Welcome to Nazi America. I, for one, do not welcome our new overlord, Fuhrer Trump.

IRL you can't just pay a few caps to any shady doctor to inject you with magic green goo that cures retinal destruction from thermonuclear detonation or lethal radiation exposure leading to mercy killings before the patient's body realizes its skin is completely flash fried alive.

This was predictable the moment #45 started the stream of lies about mail-in ballots (an extremely wise choice during a pandemic) being fraud-prone..

Just like the stream of lies about ineligible voters was a prelude to purging voter rolls of voters - not acceptable ordinarily, but since he filled the air with non-stop bullshit that millions of people were registered who shouldn't be, opposition to purging the rolls of millions of eligible voters was much, much smaller.

Just like calling a disparate and desperate band of pilgrims to the land of freedom... animals and invaders, for weeks and weeks and weeks, paved the way for everyone being OK with forcibly separating refugee parents from their children. Babes literally ripped from their mother's teat, and put into concentration camps. Did you know that sterilizing people without their informed consent is normally called genocide? Turns out americans are OK with that, when you call the victims animals first.

Nazis are fascists, and fascists follow a pattern. The Leader must not be a broad or deep thinker, must have a strong will, and must both announce intention and follow through. In the narrative that the plebes follow, #45 is Vigorously! Solving! Problems! and it doesn't matter that those problems are fiction.

To an outside observer, it's clear that americans are OK with disenfranchisement, concentration camps, genocide, and the execution of civilians by police forces. Your plot is lost.
