My wife and i watched Squid Game on Netflix and it was our must see show: we couldn't wait for our son to go to bed.
It's about an organization that picks people who are in poverty or are deeply in debt and basically offers them a chance to win BIG ( i think it was about $25-30 million (IIRC, it was 246 million won (it's a korean show dubbed into english)))
The games are cool and weird like
Red light, green light: but if you are caught by the big robotic doll girl, you are shot and killed
Tug of war: lose and you fall from a high height to your death
The main character evolves from an asshole into a human as he loses friends over the course of the games.
Very interesting and with layers like an onion, slowly peeled as you watch.
Ended weird, but left it open for a second season.... we're hoping!

A student of mine recommended the movie "Old Boy". I am sorry I watched it. What with the torture, the khallowesque displays of wealth, and the incest, I could not help but think that Korean culture has been totally fucked by how many ever years of Japanese occupation, years of war, after that, and military dictatorship and mass executions, to the point that movies like this seem normal?
At least "Kingdom" and others make it explicit. In order to resist the invasion of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Koreans became zombies. Makes sense. Still there. This is why many Koreans are "christian", but not very many Japanese are. Kind of like how Irish are Catholic, just to stick it to the
libsBrits. Damn Protestants!Makes me think, how many cultures are so distressed. Northern Irish, for sure. Israelis? Constant threat of attack, or terrorist bombing, can do that to you. Americans, and Soviets, living under the constant threat of total thermo-nuclear annihilation? Of course there it took another vector: we could all die tomorrow, so why not f**k now? But, we all know how that turned out.
And now? Syrians? Afghans? Arkansasians? These people need help, lest they become the new Koreans.

You've not seen a whole lot of Korean / Japanese entertainment, I guess? There's some weird stuff out there. Though, we put out some really weird stuff too. Guess what, their cultures have their own weird histories too!

You should watch the Rocky Horror Picture show before you compare any cultures to ours. Also, if you watch Deliverance closely, you'll see aristarchus skulking in the background.
