Anyone who worries that this place might be going downhill--did you ever consider the rose-tinted spectacle effect when you look at the past?
Like, when people pine for the heyday of Slashdot, there were shitposters even in the beginning--maybe SNR was a bit better--but maybe we're just cherry picking the best memories of the past and comparing them against the bad shit that's happening now?
Don't misunderstand me, I'm not trying to say the past and present were really equally bad. Rather, the opposite. The past and present of SoylentNews are both great. The green site, maybe not so much, what with the corporate sell-offs etc.
But meh, I don't know, just throwing ideas out there.
Things change. People come and go. But we're still all nerds interested in tech that enjoy sharing it. Let's carry that happy tradition on together.

Just realized maybe the reason the comments sections are a bit quieter here at the moment is because the staff are having to work extra hard to keep the ship running, what with Buzz having departed.
Help the staff out. Consider volunteering a bit of your time.

Considering there seems to be no vision of what the people in charge want the site to be, where it is going, or what needs done other than moar of something, even without the other real or imagined problems, why would anyone on God's green Earth volunteer? Call this post trolling all you want but no one really seems to answer the "why" of volunteering here, let alone the other 5Ws. Seems pretty clear to me, if I had free time (I really don't have much--with several other volunteer activities) or better IT skills, I'd certainly volunteer. It's all about buck feta and having a place that we run and support ourselves, for our own community.
As it is, when I see something interesting I submit the story. With just a few minutes of editing, I seem to get nearly half my subs on the main page.

Hello fren,
It is quiet. Some of my favorite people who belong on the morally and intellectually superior left are conspicuous by their absence of late. This is obviously because Joe Biden and his administration are doing such a great job at belatedly adopting Trump policies that their opinions are no longer necessary.

I come here for the news. There's been quite a lot of good science stuff recently, and on the occasions I've asked technical questions in my journal I've got some good replies, which is what I want. Also, it's a good safe space to rant. I don't have much time these days for posting comments but that doesn't mean that I don't read the articles.

Simple as that. A lot of the more interesting discussion here became rabidly political. And the deep polarization in America means people either support "their" side, or they must be supporting "the other" side. People doubled down on hard on something that turned out to be quite awful. So what identity do they have left now? And similarly I expect some people doing or supporting things in good faith are started to realize that that faith was being driven by very untoward motivations. And even now for myself. As a classical liberal who never adopted the neodemocratic identity, I enjoyed playing "the other side." But now what enjoyment is there now to be had in debating with them, even if they return? All that's left at this point is schadenfreude, which is stupid and childish.
Anywho, off to greener pastures myself again. Had no idea what'd come of this site. Just popped back in for a moment since I think some folks might find the chicken vaccine article I stuck in my journal interesting. Good luck and best regards. -S
