AI-generated video of Will Smith eating spaghetti astounds with terrible beauty

Amid this past week's controversies in AI over regulation, fears of world-ending doom, and job disruption, the clouds have briefly parted. For a brief and shining moment, we can enjoy an absolutely ridiculous AI-generated video of Will Smith eating spaghetti that is now lighting up our lives with its terrible glory.

On Monday, a Reddit user named "chaindrop" shared the AI-generated video on the r/StableDiffusion subreddit. It quickly spread to other forms of social media and inspired mixed ruminations in the press. For example, Vice said the video will "haunt you for the rest of your life," while the AV Club called it the "natural end point for AI development."

Then again, could just be the start of MIB:AI Continuum.

Obviously, the solution here is to ban alien Will Smiths from eating spaghetti. They should eat their natural food sources, like human intestines or whatever. Then we won't be watching scary videos on the internet about this.

It seems strangely appropriate at this stage that the AI generated Smith appears to have reduced cranial capacity, fetal alcohol syndrome, or some other severe genetic abnormality. Maybe the AI needs more training data so he won't be inbred.

If this [wikipedia.org] might become a reality. I certainly wouldn't be surprised.

Getting paid for sitting on your ass and let the entertainment industry use your likeness and voice? I'm down.

Of course, it more likely means that entertainment celebrities are going to become a thing of the past, as if you can auto-generate video of a real person (whom you'd need to pay), you can auto-generate video of a non-existent person and not have to pay actors at all.

Actually it means the death of cinema and Hollywood itself as the estates of deceased legends outshine living actors.

No one is going to sit through 90 minutes of the latest millennial snorefest with Adam Driver and Margot Robbie when they could download Lauren Bacall fucking River Phoenix,

        An interesting thought.

But I don't believe that real human voices and likenesses would be free to use.

But using voices/features of folks that don't exist won't demand royalties/residuals, while the estates/descendants of real actors will.

As with most things, follow the money.

Unless you're using someone else's made-up voices and features or even that yours is too close to someone else's IP. It's probably worth recalling what happened to sampling [wikipedia.org]. One of the most famous samples is something called the Amen break (more here [soylentnews.org] from an AC post in 2016) - a six second sample from a 1969 song that ended up (as of 2021) in over 5000 pieces of music.

One interesting feature is that the Amen break is de facto open source. The creators never realized it was being used for ten years, then were too poor to sue anyone, and it's now almost 40 years later. There's probably a lot of other samples out there that could achieve similar status - except that someone owns them. Maybe we'll get a lot of open source voices/features. But if not, well, that's going to hamper things. It may get to the point where someone's likeness is cheaper!

If the Will Smith can be artificial, then can't the meat in the spaghetti also be artificial? Or is it a vegetarian dish? But wait, I read somewhere, oh, yeah, on the front page, that Italy is banning lab grown meat to protect food heritage.

If it is the dream of an AI neural network, maybe that explains it.

Sort of like that other recent headline fake photo of the pope wearing a puffer jacket. There were a few warbly artifacts in that one as well.

The test of italian citizenship should be "make spaghetti and eat them". Those who botch it should be sent to education camps. Needless to say, this way of eating spaghetti would earn you un calcio in culo.
