I'm sure that you would like to join with us in welcoming three new editors to the team. They will be coming online sometime during the next few days. They are:

  • NotSanguine
  • cmn32480
  • CoolHand

The new additions bring the editorial team to a healthier size, which will enable us to achieve and maintain the standards that we believe the community deserves.

Is it? I suppose that not injecting my own opinions could be considered an agenda, but I'm pretty sure that's not what you meant.

I guess we'll just have to see then, won't we?

Recognizing your own biases is nearly impossible.

For example, Scalia on the supreme court. He is pretty adamant about being a textual originalist and therefore objective.
But that falls apart in many of his rulings because he picks and chooses the definitions of the words in the text that most appeal to his biases. Of course he does not recognize that he's doing that because, to him, those definitions are the correct ones - but all he's doing is using them as a proxy for his subjectivity. He does get riled up when called out on it - because he truly and honestly believes he's being objective.

        Here's a thought experiment:
We all believe incorrect facts. I think you can agree with that, right?
So now, try to name just one incorrect fat that you yourself believe.

Since being an editor is not something that can be automated, it is a job that requires human judgment, your biases will be manifest in the judgment you apply.

Recognizing your own biases is nearly impossible.

But recognizing the steaming load you've put forth, for what it is, is quite easy.

I don't believe in facts. Facts are facts. Either it's a fact or it's not. If it's a fact, then there's evidence for it and can be proven. No belief is required.

If it can't be documented and/or proven, it's not a fact. Then it's a hypothesis or an opinion. Not a fact.

Note that the decisions written by jurists (like Antonin Scalia) are called "opnions" not facts. Why? Because they are opinions and not facts.

As Daniel Patrick Moynihan [wikipedia.org] famously pointed out:

Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.

And so, my opinion is that you're talking out of your ass and it smells that way too.

          Have a lovely day.

Actually you do believe in facts. Not to get all epistemological on you, but everything we know is just an opinion. We all have thresholds for evidence that will give us confidence in the accuracy of our opinions. And those thresholds are a place where bias manifests. People typically have lower thresholds for opinions that confirm their beliefs.
