A leaked memo from Apple has outlined how the new T2 chip has security features that could inhibit third party repairs [news.com.au]. This means that certain repairs would require Appleās proprietary software to run diagnostics or the result of making a change could be an inoperative system and an incomplete repair. This could mean that in future making a change to an Apple device with a T2 chip could brick the device. iFixit CEO Kyle Weins has led a team to test this resulting in a successful repair which may mean that the lockout features are present and not currently enabled. Critics are calling this lockout a 'kill switch', comparing it to recent John Deere right to repair saga.
