I noticed that www.loc.gov, the Web site of the Library of Congress is now behind CloudFlare. Netcraft does not show when the site was put behind CloudFlare; however I speculate that it may have been done in response to a DDOS attack that happened in July (additional article about the DDOS—Javascript may have to be disabled to read this one without subscribing).

Stinkin umlauts in the word "Noël" keep messing up the order of my Christmas music collection when I use rsync to copy it over to my cheap Wal-Mart MP3 player. Eventually I'm going to get this right...

It's a company run by engineers. There were electronic bits all over the place. I said I liked that about them.

They are asking me to quote them on three different projects. The first one is only a week or two of work - heh: "only" - the other two I'm going to have to study before I can quote them.

If these three work out OK they said they'd have lots more work for me.

I shouldn't say who it is because that would preannounce that they will be supporting Mac OS X. Mostly they need drivers.

There are very few Mac driver consultants, as most who know how to do it have perm jobs at apple.

I'm both excited, and greatly relieved.

A couple months ago I lost a good contract because I don't have a Mac. I had a really tricked-out MacBook Pro, but it died shortly after the AppleCare extended warranty expired.

They were completely cool with that, and said they have macs I can use.

I specifically asked to work on-site. The vast majority of my clients are remote, but these guys I can get to on the bus and light rail. They were very pleased by that.

I asked to work on-site before I asked them to lend me a Mac, so they would understand I didn't plan to take it home with me.

I should be able to buy a new MacBook Pro with my first paycheck. That will be the third I've owned. I have no complaints about the first one, it lasted six years.

I know a lot of you are disappointed I didn't go ahead and finish the debate on the MIT petition story. Tough.

Most days it's fun smacking down the willfully ignorant but sometimes outside forces conspire to make me too tired to bother. I just delete all the messages, pop open a beer, and watch some TV.

This was one of those times and you're just going to have to live with it.

It's not a sure thing yet but the client sounded quite enthusiastic about me.

They're my usual sort of client, they have some windows products and they want them to work on the mac.

Google "mac os x device drivers". When I try my company is the eighth hit.

The great SEO is due to the "Tips" articles I provide. Link Popularity "flows through" from linked page to linked page. Those articles are very popular.

I'm under NDA so I can't say much about it. They're a hardware vendor. They have three projects for me so I could be working for them for several months.

Santa Killed My Dog!

They say that Santa's coming,
He comes 'round every year.
He comes he'll meet a shotgun slug
'cause he ain't welcome here.

Five years ago this Christmas
The fatass came around
With jingle bells and ho ho hos
And looking like a clown.

He came in for a landing
As I let out a yawn
My house is pretty little
So he landed on the lawn.

I didn't have the time to yell
As he came in through the fog;
He came in fast and and came down hard
And landed on my dog.

He looked around all furtive like
As I reached for my gun,
Then jumped in sleigh, yelled “giddie up”
And took off on the run.

And so, that fatassed bastard
Better stay away from here
'cause ever since he killed my dog
I have no Christmas cheer.

VNC

I've had RealVNC installed and updated off of Ninite.com for awhile now, and I used to be able to use it and have used it many times in the past in previous jobs. But today I want to use it and I can't because apparently I need to have a subscription. And I can get a home subscription, but that apparently doesn't let me connect directly but instead runs my connections through someone's cloud somewhere.

So I tried TightVNC, but whenever I try to connect I get a message that says "server not configured properly." Everywhere I googled for this message people were saying to try UltraVNC, so I am trying to try UltraVNC.

Except UltraVNC has the jerkiest website I have seen in a long time. Every page I bring up from their site is obscured for 10+ seconds with a shame screen telling me in four languages what a bad person I am for using an ad blocker. And the download page is apparently obscured permanently until I turn off the ad blocker.

Is there a VNC program out there that isn't run by complete jerks, and functions?

Update: when I disabled adblock plus for the UltraVNC download page, the ads seem to be for TeamViewer, a competing proprietary product. That just really does not bode well, does it?

I told my doctor that the imipramine that I've been taking for depression is not working as well as I expected it to. I told him I was bored all the time, that I knew plenty of things that would relieve the boredom but that I didn't want to do any of them.

He told me to discontinue the imipramine and put me on Latuda. This is a new medication that is said to work especially well for Manic-Depressives.

I've been taking the Latuda for a few days, but I know very well that all antidepressants require a long time to take effect.

However the other night I did some drawing. I'm quite good when I'm in practice but have not been in practice. I could see that I drew better than the last few times I tried.

More importanly I found myself absorbed into the work. Not bored at all not noticing the passage of time, it was a good experience.
