Women's Equality Day
So, it's Women's Equality Day. Lot of you probably think about this time I'd be busting out with a sexist rant. Hate to disappoint but I'm all about equality. Actual equality though not this bullshit third-gen feminist version of equality where they think equality means special treatment for their tragic victimhood.
No, equality always has and always will mean equal treatment. Every single time. No exceptions for past mistreatment. No white-knighting up if someone with tits comes crying on your shoulder that people are mean to her just because she calls them misogynists, shitlords, tools of the patriarchy, etc...
In fact, no calling yourself a feminist period. If you do it as a woman it's saying you feel your entire gender has been victimized and should be given special treatment because it is incapable of taking care of itself. If you do it as a man you're saying an entire gender is in need of your protection.
You either treat a woman as if she's an adult and as capable of taking care of her own shit as you are, or you don't. There is no "yes, but" to it. Equal treatment or sexism, there are no other choices.

Today we decided to halt our Kickstarter campaign. In the past few weeks, Meta Mesh and its volunteers have had to face a lot of challenges, both in the business and personal realms. We received wide support from many of those we directly asked. For that, we are terrifically grateful.
We have decided to change the direction our company is headed. In no way are we finished. In fact, this Kickstarter experience revealed a lot to us about who we want to be and how to be it.
In the upcoming months we will be expanding PittMesh, launching a webstore where pre-configured routers can be purchased, and will be building a dedicated PittMesh Working Group where people who want to contribute to building a Community Wireless Network can learn about new technology, can gain new skills, and can network with inspired people.
Definitely stay tuned to our website and our social media feeds. In fact, mere moments after closing our Kickstarter campaign something occurred which we will announce shortly that has been months in the making and we are incredibly excited about.

August 6th, 2015 Republican Primary Debates
The first Republican primary debates will be "legally" available online only to Fox News cable subscribers. Assuming you don't have TV access to the debate and are bored/interested/depraved enough to want to watch live, look for and post streams in the comments. They are sure to be clamping down on livestreaming services like Periscope, but others might escape notice. Twitter real time search is a great way to find these kinds of links and generally a good source of entertainment during these sorts of live events. Here's the Fox News schedule:
- 5pm ET: First (kiddy pool candidates) Debate
- 6pm ET: Online Pre-Show
- 9pm ET: Primetime Debate
- 11pm ET: Online Post-Debate Show
Jon Stewart's last episode of the Daily Show will start at 11pm ET and will last 52 minutes.
The candidates making the cut for the main debate were Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, Mike Huckabee, Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Rand Paul, Chris Christie, and John Kasich. Seven candidates who did not qualify were invited to participate in the 5:00 PM forum; these were Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, Bobby Jindal, Carly Fiorina, Lindsey Graham, George Pataki, and Jim Gilmore. Because of a rule-change announced by FOX one week before the debate-invitations went out, Graham, Pataki, and Gilmore will participate at 5pm despite averaging below 1% in the five selected polls. (Former IRS Commissioner Mark Everson was excluded from the 5pm tier, along with other relatively-unknown candidates who did not meet the updated invitation-criteria of "consistently being offered to respondents in major national polls as recognized by Fox News.") The five selected polls were conducted by Fox News, Bloomberg, CBS News, Monmouth University, and Quinnipiac University.
I made this as a journal because I didn't want to subject all of Soylent to it, especially since Fox News is not making it easy to watch the debates.

Syriza continues to impress
N.b. since this is filled to the brim with my own opinion and reactions it doesn't suit being submitted as a story, great for a journal entry though :)
Syriza (a Greek acronym of what would be something like “The Coalition of the Radical Left” in English) is the main and largest party in the current coalition government in Greece. With a name like that (and lots and lots of ideology that I'm rather allergic to XD) I wasn't enthusiastic when they won the Greek election, I thought they would be like so many others who describe themselves in the same manner (there are always exceptions though, I know that).
But my misgivings have been put to shame! Time and time again they've obviously done their best to protect and champion the interests of Greece against the so-called “austerity” dictated by the EU and other scum like the IMF. “Austerity” which only ever seems to target those who are already living sparse and austere lives. “Austerity” which shrinks the economy as those most likely to spend any money they have on essential goods get even less money to spend. “Austerity” which continues to regress any remnants of national sovereignty into iron clad bureaucracy at the beck and call of the constantly manipulating and transnational “free actors” of “global commerce” (warning shadows of the steadfastly approaching horrors of TTIP and TPP).
It also helped put me at ease when I discovered that the tiny party I would be most likely to vote for if I was Greek was part of the government coalition. That party would be the “new/alternative right” ANEL or “Independent Greeks”.
Now RT reports that the Greek government has taken it even further towards actual democracy and announced a referendum to be held for people to vote in favor or against the debt deal that is being offered to Greece. The Greek people will instruct the Greek government as is appropriate in any democracy.
Thank you Greece, thank you Syriza, and thank you ANEL, your sensibility is shining one of the few lights and perhaps one of the brightest in a rather dismally dark and depressing world, may you continue down this path ♥

Yeah I need to get this off my chest.
- First:
Although certainly a central topic those who think the US civil war /as a war/ was about the emancipation of slaves rather than a war over secession and declaration of independence are as ignorant or malicious as those who think the second world war was fought on account of rescuing jews and other holocaust victims rather than a war fought to liberate invaded countries and territory.
The victims of both are the ones that ought to be the most offended over such examples of blatant rewriting of history aimed solely at falsely glorifying the victors and endowing them with attributes they never had. The history and even more so the history of the victims (slaves, jews, slavic people, homosexuals, the seriously ill, the debilitated, anyone who stuck their neck out etc.) is being reduced to a lie.
- Second:
The US attempts at removal of the use of the confederate flag (which belongs to everyone living in the states that tried to break free from the US) is an example of cultural theft equal to that of the (continued) nazi appropriation and gross abuse of pan-germanic and pagan symbols like sun-wheels (like swastikas) and runes (which belongs to everyone in non-roman Europe in particular but also humanity in general).
- Third:
Unfortunate and wasteful as it is the US and NATO is now clearly first and foremost fascist just as the Soviet Union and Warsaw pact was fascist and as the Third Reich and Axis powers were fascist and that's true no matter how offensive it might feel feels to Germans (few of them complain, denial is rare), Russians (some of them complain, denial is still somewhat common), or Usians (almost everyone will complain, denial is “truth”).
To me it is as if during the last 16 years the world has lost between 200 and 300 years of progress paid for in blood and suffering by billions of humans. But of course that's not the case: it probably wasn't widespread in the first place and “everyone” just rode on the coattails of a few of the less idiotic humans having a somewhat brief period of actual influence and power. Well that era is done and gone that's for sure :C

Who Reads New Books?
Looking at the comments in the current SoylentNews Poll on the 2015 Hugo Awards, and I stumbled across a post from wisnoskij:
Seriously, I cannot imagine trying to keep up with modern literature. I read somewhere that like thousands of books get published a day. There are billions and billions of old great books, you could likely spend a lifetime just reading the boos published in one year. It just makes more sense to focus your effort on books which have proven to have staying power instead of the newest flash in the pan.
This got me thinking and lead me to post a somewhat rambling response:
If no one reads the new books, or takes the time to digest them like the classics, then in 50 years from now the books with 'staying power' will be the same one as they are now.
I generally take the opposite approach, if lots of people have engaged with a certain bit of media, be it books, movies or music, i'm more likely to go find something else. The ones with 'staying power' are not going anywhere, there are already millions of people who will endorse it and keep the art alive for the next generation(s).
Surely it's better to discover something new and spread the word about something that until now had little of recognition it deserves. I totally get your logic, and it can be frustrating to find something new and good, but it's worth the effort and immensely rewarding when you do get there.
There is however a very valid point you make about a signal:noise problem with all media now, there are books coming out every day and it is impossible to keep up. However, ignoring it and sticking to the classics does not benefit the art, it only places more value on the marketing machines to keep certain books or intellectual properties in the public consciousness.
On a related tangent: I'm not a fan of The Beatles music, however I can appreciate the value of their music from listening to people who are fans of their work and were inspired by them. That is not to say I don't enjoy their music either, I do, but i'd rather continue with the evolution and hear people who were inspired by them, than look back on it as a golden age of music in which nothing that came after can compare.
The classics in literature and other media laid a foundation and other people have built on, the last thing we should be doing it dismissing it. It's no longer served up for us in a way that tells us we will like it before we've even read it, thats a good thing. Art is subjective and shouldn't be shackled by tradition and group-think.
Thought I would share this here as it's a topic i've been pondering for a while, the over-saturation of media making it very hard to choose what to consume and the signal:noise problem. I'd like some feedback if anyone has thoughts on the comments above, mine or from wisnoskij. As above, I am talking in more general terms of media (including news), not specifically about books.
