Very crooked people here! Marked my tweet as spam. I am not a spammer! Took away the karma bonus modifier from my tweet after I sent it. Took off the bonus, long after I sent it. To hide my tweet. Because I told the truth. Told the truth about the digital catapult on the Ford. On the great, great aircraft carrier the Gerald R. Ford. Sneaky crooks! This is what is ruining America! Too many crooks spoil the broth, folks. And let me tell you, this broth is spoiled. #FuckComey #TrumpAirlines #TrumpWater #TrumpResorts #TrumpTrain #TrumpVineyardEstates #TrumpWinery #TrumpSteaks #TrumpVodka #TRUMP2020 #WINNING #MakeAmericaGreatAgain

"I assured Trump on multiple occassions that we weren't investigating him, but he fired me to stop me investigating him." - near quote.

FFS - you can't have it both ways, man. You did enjoy a nice credibility rating. Today, you blew yourself out of the water. Sure, the partisans on both sides are going to work this to death. But, credibility you do not have. A statement like that doesn't come from a lawman, it comes from someone trying to play politics.

The thing is, I have little idea what Comey's politics are. It has often been suggested that Comey might be under duress from the Clinton clan. Haven't made my own mind up on that. Some things suggest that might be true, but then, Comey released statements that undermined Clinton's campaign.

Maybe Comey is actually working for Russia?

This guy is a mess, that's for damned sure.

"I assured Trump on multiple occassions that we weren't investigating him, but he fired me to stop me investigating him."

U.K. election is TODAY.

This goes out to all my supporters in great, great, Great Britain, and I know there are a lot of you. All my great supporters in England, in Ireland, in Scotland, and in Wales. In part of Wales, I think. In the U.K. Don't forget, today, June 8th, is your election. Very important that you go to your polling centers and vote today. And you've got a lot of choices to choose from. You've got the Conservatives, great name, the Conservatives. But look at what they've done. It's a total disaster. And you've got the BNP, the British National Party. They have some great ideas, the BNP. But the party you need to vote for, to vote for today, is UKIP. Because you voted, last year you voted, to leave the EU. To leave the European Union. And UKIP is the party that will do it right, that will get you out cleanly and completely. Believe me, folks, I've been to Europe and it's not pretty. Been to Brussels. There's carnage going on there and they don't know how to fix it. Don't know how, or won't fix it. And when Europe sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're bringing crime. They're bringing drugs. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people. But you've got to pull out, all the way out. And UKIP will pull you right out. Plop! And you'll be out, cleanly. No mess. Nigel Farage is a great fellow, a great chap as you say over there. Like a brother to me. Like a twin brother, an identical twin brother. He's been a tremendous part of my campaign, he's a huge part of why I'm your President. Resigned from leading UKIP so he could join my campaign. And the guy he picked to take his place, Paul Nutall, is great too. Haven't met him, but I heard about him and what I heard is great. Paul understands that torture works. That's something I've always said and it's something that's very important to understand right now. Right now when London Bridge is being attacked, when Manchester is being attacked. And Paul understands it. And he's going to ban veils, ban veils that cover the face. Very important to taking your country back, to taking back your countries (England, Ireland, Scotland, and part of Wales). So you need to make Paul your Prime Minister. And to do that, I'm told, you need a lot of UKIP MPs, lots of UKIP Members of Parliament. So go, get out there and vote them in! Make Britain Great again. And when you're in Scotland, play a round at Turnberry. Beautiful, beautiful course. Great views. #BritainTogether #TrumpResorts

Hua Haifeng, Li Zhao and Su Heng

As you know, my daughter, Ivanka, makes shoes in China. I mean, Huajian Group makes them. Beautiful shoes, elegant. They'll make you look like a million bucks. But China is trying to make Ivanka look bad. China Labor Watch, great people, came to check on Huajian Group, keep them honest. Which is what Ivanka wants. What she wants, and what I want. I am the most honest person that you've ever seen in your life, and that's how I've raised my children. Raised them to be honest. But China arrested them, arrested the people from China Labor Watch. Hua Haifeng, Li Zhao and Su Heng. Said they were "taping." "Taping" isn't great, isn't always great. I think every mike should have a light, should have a flashing light, a red light to let me know when it's on. But the "taping" was part of the investigation. And China arrested them, arrested the guys, the great guys, from China Labor Watch. Which makes Ivanka look bad. Makes me look bad. Folks, I would never interfere with an investigation. Nor would Ivanka. I raised her right and neither of us have anything to hide. We would never obstruct an investigation. Believe me. I instructed the State Department, my great, great State Department, instructed them to ask China to release those investigators. But China didn't. So now I'm calling on China myself, as the President of the United States of America: release Hua Haifeng, Li Zhao and Su Heng. Release them all and release them now. #Heroes

Katie McHugh needs your help.

Folks, we all know that Islam is the biggest, biggest danger in the world today. We've seen attacks in Manchester, in Kabul (150+ killed!), in London where they have that awful mayor and on Monday in Orlando. Terrible, terrible attacks. Very sad. Sick. Katie McHugh is a brave lady. She dared to speak the truth about Islam, said what we all know is the truth. "There would be no deadly terror attacks in the U.K. if Muslims didn’t live there." That's what she tweeted. That's exactly what she tweeted. Now she's fired! The very politically correct Breitbart News, where Katie was an editor, fired her for telling the truth. This is how the FAKE MSM treat their own. This is why the MSM is nothing but lies. When journalists dare to tell the truth, they're fired! Katie needs your help. Needs your money. As you know, I've promised to repeal Obamacare. Repeal it and replace it with something much better. Repeal and replace. Have you heard that expression before? I came up with it myself. You're going to love what the American Health Care Act does to the taxes, especially the tax on your investments. Believe me, you'll love it. Totally getting rid of that unfair tax. Waiting on the Senate to pass that. But in the meantime, Katie very unfairly lost her job and she'll be losing her insurance. If she hasn't already lost her medical insurance. Because her insurance was through her job. And they fired her. That means she needs to pay her medical bills and she's asking for donations. Believe me, ladies can "rack up" huge medical bills. Rack up, get it? Because boob jobs cost a lot. When they're done right, they cost a lot. But they're totally worth it. Follow @k_mcq and donate through the link. https://t.co/IRAUOj6pIL

Girl BORN With Black Face Mark Was Called ‘UGLY’

I stumbled over this story, and thought some Soylentils might appreciate it.

It’s not easy living in today’s world if you are one who is attempting to live up to other people’s expectations. It’s an unhealthy way to go through life. For too many young women around the world, the imperfections they find can be damaging to them, especially when others are so willing to point them out.

Tthere is at least one Brazilian model who refuses to go along with the hype, and has instead, turned her ‘imperfection’ into a prized part of herself.

The 24 year old model, Mariana Mendes, knows all about imperfections, as she’s reminded of it every day in the mirror. Born with a black hued birthmark that covers a large portion of her face, the mark is medically termed congenital melanocytic nevus, and for most of her life, she was told that it was ugly.

But Mendes doesn’t see it that way. She is well aware the the mark is there, and she knows that many view her as different…Yet she instead believes that the mark makes her unique.

At the age of 5, because her Mother feared that Mendes would be bullied throughout her life, she underwent multiple surgeries to attempt to lessen the color of her birthmark. Yet, after enduring a year of medical procedures, Mendes decided she wanted to stop any treatment.

“My mom was worried. She didn’t want me to suffer any bullying, but I don’t remember ever having any problems in school. When I was 6, she asked me if I wanted to continue with the birthmark removal procedures that I did in Sao Paulo. I told her no.”
It was the very same birthmark on her face the pushed her to embrace it. She wasn’t going to let a mark define her, and instead sought to be an example to people everywhere to accept themselves, and find their self-confidence as she has.

“I feel more beautiful and totally different from other people because I have a nevus. Having a nevus that is as large as mine is not common, so of course there are many people who stare and who don’t like it, but I don’t care.”Mendes often will come across people that mistakenly assume that her mark is makeup. “A lot of people ask me about my birthmark, sometimes they think it’s makeup or a tattoo but I don’t mind and explain it to them.” Even though she is not without the average instigators in life – you know, those people whose only pursuits seem to be making others as miserable – Mendes has learned to just brush them off:
“I’m proud of having a nevus, it’s a part of who I am and how I learned to like myself…I find living with a facial nevus very easy because I like it a lot and I want others to feel as confident as I do about their nevi.”

All of us have our own imperfections that are totally out of our control. Embrace them, or lean to deal with them. Learning to live with the things you have no control over can be a refreshing, and liberating way to live one’s life.

Click the link, to see some photos of her. It took a moment for my eyes to decide that the blemish is hers, and not an artifact of a crap camera or photoshopping. But, she's quite pretty!

Cultural appropriation in Portland

While reading Reason.com, I ran across this Google Docs spreadsheet titled "(Alternatives To) White-Owned Appropriative Restaurants in Portland". From the header to the "About" tab:

This is NOT about cooking at home or historical influences on cuisines; it's about profit, ownership, and wealth in a white supremacist culture.

White people are nearly 50% more likely than people of color (POC) to own a business in the state of Oregon. Ownership builds wealth in ways that employment does not. The racial wealth and small business lending gaps in the US are pronounced, which allows white folks to open new businesses more easily. These white-owned businesses hamper the ability for POC to run successful businesses of their own (cooking their own cuisines) by either consuming market share with their attempt at authenticity or by modifying foods to market to white palates. Their success further perpetuates the problems stated above. It's a cyclical pattern that will require intentional behavior change to break. If you've come here in anger, please read at least a couple of these articles before continuing to the list on the next tab below.

In the meat of the spreadsheet at the "Restaurants List" tab, we have

"Many people have asked for us to list alternatives owned by people of color (POC), so we have updated the list to include the nearest (in cuisine and distance) POC-owned restaurant to each of the appropriative restaurants. If you look at these two lists and you have visited more of the red than the green, please ask yourself why.

Note that the backgrounds of the people of color who own the listed restaurants do not necessarily match the cuisine they serve. We could have limited the list to only people selling their own cuisine, but we made the decision not to in order to make a point. If this seems like hypocrisy from the standards set for white-owned restaurants, you haven't understood why white appropriation is a problem.

White business owners wield economic and ""cultural capital"" advantages over POC business owners, so they are ""punching down"" by appropriating cuisines from people who are disadvantaged in comparison. A Vietnamese person opening a Japanese restaurant does not have the same impact as a non-Hispanic white person opening a Mexican restaurant. Healthy cultural exchange can and does occur when the playing field is relatively even, but appropriation is a demonstration of power that perpetuates inequities.

I think this double standard speaks for itself despite the rationalizing of the last paragraph. But is it real or a clever hoax?

Sanctuary Bills Faced a Surprise Foe: Legal Immigrants

Sanctuary Bills in Maryland Faced a Surprise Foe: Legal Immigrants

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. — When lawmakers in Howard County, Md., a stretch of suburbia between Washington and Baltimore, declared their intention to make the county a sanctuary for people living in the country illegally, J. D. Ma thought back to how hard he had worked studying English as a boy in Shanghai.

Stanley Salazar, a native of El Salvador, worried that the violent crime already plaguing Maryland’s suburbs attributed to immigrant gangs would eventually touch his own daughters.

Hongling Zhou, who had been a student in Beijing during the Tiananmen Square uprising, feared an influx of undocumented immigrants, and their children, would cripple the public schools.

At first blush, making Howard County a sanctuary for undocumented immigrants had seemed a natural move: The county has twice as many Democrats as Republicans and a highly educated population, full of scientists and engineers. One in five residents was born abroad.

But the bill met stout opposition from an unlikely source: some of those very same foreign-born residents.

In passionate testimony before county legislators, and in tense debates with liberal neighbors born in the United States, legal immigrants argued that offering sanctuary to people who came to the country illegally devalued their own past struggles to gain citizenship.

Some even felt it threatened their hard-won hold on the American dream.

Their objections stunned Democratic supporters of sanctuary here and helped bring about the bill’s demise in March. A similar proposal for the state collapsed this month in the Maryland Senate, where Democrats also hold a two-to-one advantage. Some of the same immigrants spoke out against it.

The failure of the sanctuary bills in Maryland reveals a potentially troublesome fissure for Democrats as they rush to defy Mr. Trump. Their party has staked out an activist position built around protecting undocumented immigrants. But it is one that has alienated many who might have been expected to support it.

What follows are the stories of four immigrants in Maryland who oppose sanctuary status — people whose voices have rarely been heard in the long debate over how to fix the nation’s immigration system.

Some supporters of sanctuary had dismissed them as white-collar professionals whose personal struggles could not compare with those of undocumented people now facing possible deportation.

But anyone who thought their journeys were easy, these immigrants said, has never walked in their shoes.

SN Staffing Issues: A Venting

I'm not doing this up as a proper story right at the moment because I'm not feeling especially professional and I prefer to be when talking about site business as a staff member. That said, this needs some attention.

A combination of personal issues and burnout have caused staffing on the site to drop annoyingly low. Here's the current shortfalls in staffing:

  • Half a dozen or so Editors. We could use ten. Preferably folks not on a GMT or east coast time daylight hours schedule.
  • Two perl coders. NCommander is still around doing systems and infrastructure but it's just me and paulej72 writing perl for the site currently. We realistically need four to six.
  • Two board members. We need a bare minimum of three to prevent tie votes.
  • Zero treasurers. The two board members have been covering this but we need someone who's good with finances and can keep track of everything officially.
  • Zero artsy types. All UI design choices and graphics are currently done by us code monkeys, this is far from ideal.
  • Zero wiki admins. We usually have to figure out who even has emergency backup access to it when something needs administratively done.

Again, this is not an official call to arms. This is me being annoyed at the state of things and venting. Board and treasurer decisions will be made by the board and it's not even my place to ask for recruits, so I'm not. That said, if you want to volunteer for any staff position, we're always open.

Best way to get in touch is to contact us on IRC (look over to the left) but don't expect an immediate response because we're often busy doing Life Stuff. Email works as well. themightybuzzard@soylentnews.org or any other staff member will get you forwarded to someone happy to help you on your way to exploitation.

The August 21 solar eclipse

Anyone have plans for observing the August 21 solar eclipse?

I'm thinking about trying for a picture rather than just merely observing it. I don't have any serious gear so it'd be probably a landscape shot using a (cheap) digital camera with some sort of filter. Else I'll make a pin hole camera and watch the eclipse indirectly (not staring at the Sun and permanently blinding myself).
