...Instead He’ll Run A $1 Trillion One.
Fourteen months before he was elected president, Donald Trump vowed to make sure the country would never again run a $400 billion budget deficit.
“Well, he’s right about that,” laughed Capitol Hill budget veteran Stan Collender on Monday.
Because, as it turns out, Trump kept his promise ― only not in the way his supporters might have hoped.
In the first budget cycle fully under their control, Trump and the Republican-run Congress are likely to run a deficit that will top $1 trillion, some two-and-a-half times as big as the one Trump had complained about at his Sept. 30, 2015, rally in Keene, New Hampshire.
GPUs make a lot heat. They also do sums very quickly. You can buy GPUS these days that do well over a trillion floating-point operations per second. Some crazy people like to donate the computing power of their GPUs to distributed science projects. Some like to mine crypto-currencies hopefully to make a profit.
Suppose you could make a very simple computer that basically consisted of a cheap CPU and a few GPUs capable of somewhere between 1 and 10 TFLOPS, and would output heat at a rate of about 1kW, you could use it as a fan heater. Such a device would cost between £0.12 and £0.15 per hour to run at current UK prices.
Could that computing power be worth that much money to someone? Could you heat your house for free?
[Final (I hope) Update 0715GMT, 12 February 2018]
I ended up implementing Ampache and it seems to work acceptably (more details here).
I still need to do some clean up, but this is looking good.
Oh, and fuck you, Tivo!
[End Update]
[Update 0528GMT, 11 February 2018]
Fuck you Tivo!
[End Update]
I've been using Tivo for more than a decade (I got the first one free with a new TV -- the first one is always free, isn't it?).
Of course, DVRs are really only useful if you view/hear your own media and copy media to and from the DVR.
For a number of years, I've been using pyTivo and kmttg to manage that process.
Several months ago, a Tivo software upgrade broke the music streaming functionality from pyTivo (although oddly, not the video). Some research found that the only Tivo supported streaming music app (and video, but I don't care about that) was Plex media server, coupled with the (really, really, really crappy) Tivo Plex client.
I implemented the Plex Media Server and found it to be slow and a resource hog (which I didn't really care about since it was on its own VM).
The big issue for me was that even though the Tivo was local to me and the Plex server was local to me, the Plex server would refuse to function unless I created an account on their site and allowed the Plex server to phone home.
It's bad enough that it's clunky and slow, but that I had to allow them to spy on my completely *local* music streaming? Not happening. As such, I shut down the Plex server for good. Good riddance to bad garbage.
So, for the last few months, I've been trying to find a mechanism which will allow me to stream music through my Tivo -- with privacy -- like pyTivo used to allow me to do.
I've come up with nothing. Tools like Emby, Streambaby, GMediaServer, Galleon and others aren't supported (Tivo killed support for HME and doesn't support DLNA) any more.
Eventually, I'd like to move off of Tivo and go with something that's FOSS, but I'm not ready to plunk down the cash (a PC with multiple tuners and enough CPU, memory and disk to support my needs will be pricier than is practicable right now) at the moment.
So here's a hail Mary to any Soylentils who may have had the same issue and solved it.
I'm not averse to bringing in some inexpensive hardware (with HDMI or composite connectors) to stream audio to my receiver, bypassing the Tivo altogether. But I'd much prefer a software solution.
Any ideas or suggestions?
A neo-Nazi Holocaust denier is set to become the Republican nominee for a congressional seat in Illinois, the Chicago Sun-Times reported on Sunday.
An Illinois-Nazi too. I hate Illinois Nazis!
Holocaust denier to become Republican nominee for Illinois congressional seat.
Jones’s Nazi costume and celebrations of Hitler’s birthday, his protest against a local Holocaust museum and his presence at neo-Nazi and white supremacist events have long been documented.
It seems like if you're going to spend the time writing a partisan hack-job memo you'd at least make sure the publicly-verifiable parts are true. Not our boy Nunes! Stupid Watergate continues.
Amid all the excitement over the Devin Nunes #TheMemo, it is important to remember that it is a partisan summary of FISA warrant applications that we the People have not been allowed to see. And in determining whether you trust Nunes’s summary, it might be relevant that it inaccurately summarizes something that is public record: James Comey’s testimony in 2017 regarding whether the allegations in the memo had been verified.
A Significant Inaccuracy In #TheMemo Calls Its Credibility Into Question
UPDATE: A second publicly-verifiable statement of fact has been proven false.
@realDonaldTrump
Thank you for all of the nice compliments and reviews on the State of the Union speech. 45.6 million people watched, the highest number in history. @FoxNews beat every other Network, for the first time ever, with 11.7 million people tuning in. Delivered from the heart!
Meanwhile, back in reality:
But it was smaller than the 48 million who watched Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress last year and smaller than several speeches delivered by recent predecessors. Barack Obama's joint session speech in 2009 drew 52 million viewers; George W. Bush's State of the Union address in 2003 drew 62 million viewers; and Bill Clinton's joint session speech in 1993 drew 67 million viewers. (A newly elected president's first address to a joint session of Congress is not considered a State of the Union speech.)
Trump says his State of the Union viewership was the highest ever. The ratings say otherwise.
Remember when the President of the United States lying was considered a bad thing?
I was getting my morning coffee from the coffee shop near my house this morning. It was a quiet morning, and one of the girls took my usual order. I asked her how her weekend was and she giggled and said it was great. When I asked what she did, she said she plays DOTA2. I said "Shut Up!" and let her know that I also played DOTA2 as an evil Techies player (the most hated hero in the game). We talked for another minute as she wrote her playertag and phone number on a little slip of paper.
I also went in for breakfast last weekend with my wife, her sister and her husband. I had grabbed a table that had just been vacated and she came over to wipe it off. I asked how she was and she just started talking. She told me about her previous employer and how she hated it, and how she is much happier now.
I'm really bad at telling if a girl likes me or not, but I'm pretty sure she was flirting with me. It it just seemed too giggly and awkward to be a normal conversation, but I guess you can never be sure. Anyways, her name is Annie.
She has, I assume, a sister that also works there. They look almost identical. They might be identical twins, although I think her sister is a couple years older. I have a hard time telling them apart, but I'm like 80% sure that that I talked to the same one over the weekend as I did today... It would be a little awkward if I called her by her sister's name.
Anyways, I think she likes me... Maybe. I don't want to fuck this up. I haven't had a chance like this in a long time.
I googled her playerid, nothing came up. I googled her phone number and I found a couple pages for an escort from 2014. The escort was supposedly 35 in 2014, and there was a picture of the escorts ass. There is no way Annie is 35, and the picture of the ass was too big for her. I'm thinking that she just got a used phone number.
Anyways, like I said, I don't get chances like this very often. What should I do?
UPDATE: I texted her yesterday and we ended up playing a game of DOTA together before bed. I was hoping to impress with my wicked DOTA skillz, but of course ended up having a shit game. Oh well. I think we are both pretty awkward, so even if there is interest (who knows?!), we could continue just having awkward interactions for the foreseeable future. If anything happens, I'll post it here.
If there is no future update on Annie, assume I'm a pussy and nothing happened.
A Pakistani man who became a Humanist and renounced Islam sought political asylum in the UK. His application was refused. From The Guardian:
Walayat, who has lived in the UK since 2011, said he had received death threats from members of his family and community in Pakistan after integrating into secular British life, forming a relationship with a non-Muslim partner and refusing to conform to the expectations of conservative Islam.
In true British pub quiz fashion, the Home Office tested his claim to be a Humanist by asking if he knew the names of any Greek philosophers who were humanistic.
When tested on his knowledge of humanism, Walayat gave a “basic definition” but could not identify “any famous Greek philosophers who were humanistic”
The last pub quiz I was at, the question master was adamant that Apollo 14 was the last manned mission to the Moon... I see the Home Office takes things as seriously.
Walayat joined the Humanists UK organisation in August, but said he had believed in the basic principles of humanism from childhood.
Now more than 120 leading philosophers have signed a letter asking the Home Secretary to reconsider the man's case since "Knowledge of Plato and Aristotle is not a reliable test for whether someone is a humanist.”
Sometimes I despair.
We put off part Two of Ethics for Soylentils, even though they are sorely needed, for another unfortunate series of events: aristarchus censored yet again.
As some are aware, since the unpleasantness at Charlottesville last August, I have been submitting articles on the self-named "alt-right". Nearly all of these have been rejected. That in itself does not disturb me, I tend to call a spade a stupid idiot white supremacist homosexual gayhater who cannot get dates. But that is just me. No, here we have a case, for the second time, when one of my submissions has been accepted, but then disappeared. This worries me. It is one thing to be rejected, with which I have no problem, and I will not grouse about. But to be accepted, and then the Man in the High Castle steps in to block the Fine Article? Sounds like censorship to me, and must also seem that way to at least some of the editorial staff.
So here is my submission that was accepted, but never made it to the front page:
aristarchus [soylentnews.org] writes:
Not sure about this one. Seems too early to panic. But evidently, Chelsea (nee Bradley) Manning attended a party of the alt-right, white, and light. Article is on Slate [slate.com]:
Chelsea Manning went to a rather awkward party on Saturday night. It’s something she’s been able to do since May, four months after an outgoing President Obama commuted the former U.S. Army intelligence analyst’s prison sentence after she had served seven years behind bars for leaking 750,000 sensitive military and diplomatic documents on Iraq and Afghanistan.
Well that alone should get Soylentils all a buzz, especially the ones who are "Stolen Valor" participants.
But there is more to the story, and the party. In a BuzzFeed report, partygoers touted Manning’s attendance as proof of their own inclusivity. “I truly don’t want to speak for her but I guess she respects what this is all about,” said Jack Posobiec, an infamous alt-right provocateur and vocal Trump supporter. Cernovich later tweeted that he was “glad she stopped by.”
Yes I literally shook hands with Chelsea Manning tonigut, the left is freaking out, it was not a big deal. It was a huge and amazing party. Glad she stopped by. All are welcome to party with me.
— Mike Cernovich ?? (@Cernovich) January 21, 2018If it is alright with the dudes that promoted Pizzagate, that someone who released the child-murdering conspiracy theory that is the US Military is at their party, well, it it alright with me.
But:In other words, Manning claims she attended the party to learn more about a group of people she believes push a dangerous ideology that doesn’t deserve a platform. Gathering “intelligence” on “fascists” is probably not the most pressing activity when you’re facing a difficult Senate race, nor is the inconspicuousness presumably required of such a secret mission realistic if you’re as famous as Chelsea Manning. If that is what she was up to, it’s also a move that could be construed as evidence of an affiliation with antifa, the anti-fascist activists on the left that are often associated with violence and direct-action tactics that sometimes break the law. Antifa’s tactics also include conducting deep research on far-right organizers, sometimes by embedding activists at events.
OK, you know the drill, Soylentils! Look to your Right! Now look to your Left! One of these people is a Microsoft shill. Careful what you say.

Only including the Forbes link because their site is opaque if you block javascript, and I am hoping someone can tell us what it says! And, the evening was not a total loss [nydailynews.com]. One Nazi got punched in the face. So, who was making money off the alt-right in this instance? And how is this submission user hostile?
As usual, all the actual links are stripped, and this is actually the version I posted after this submission was put into stasis. But the points remain the same. (Except, what happened to the User:Hostile tag? It was there until I pointed it out. Is there a Hostile User list on SoylentNews? Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the antifa party? The Mighty McCarthy Buzzard! ) It was pertinent enough for some editor to approve of it, but beyond the pale for some other editor, for some other reason, which I presume we will never know.
In other news, janrinok sent me a very nice Direct Message, (note: normal Soylentils do not have these, so they are like messages from the Gods!), where he said he read much of the past history of the censorship of the arirstarchus on this site, but he did not see it as such. And he expressed some concern that my submissions might open SoylentNews up to a lawsuit (Peter Thiel is an ass!). I do not find that convincing, and I still believe that it is the political bias of several (I could name names, and name names of people who were to become eds, and were mysteriously dropped?) members of the editorial staff, and The Mighty Busstard.
Strange, janrinok seemed to think that I took TMB to be my nemesis. Nothing could be further from the truth. I consider TMB to be my student. A recalcitrant, stubborn, and significantly developmentally delayed student, but I have hope for him. In the long run.
So I encourage everyone to add the #freearistarchus!!! tag to your sig, even though we are not Twitter (thank the gods), in order to shake up the eds. The promise that was Buckfeta is in danger of being lost, as I have long pointed out. So we need to decide what SoylentNews is to be, a libertarian backwater blog, or an actual replacement for the site that must not be named, for the same reason that site was what it was.
Oh, and if any of you disagree with me, I will more likely than not send you over to Larry the Cable Guy. Let's git 'er done!
