How Two Escaped Killers Could Completely Disappear

Noah Remnick writes in the NYT that as the clock ticks on Richard Matt and David Sweat who escaped from maximum-security Clinton Correctional Facility last weekend, experts say the two escaped killers are increasingly likely to evade capture for a substantial period. “A lot of escapes are spontaneous and the guys get tripped up because they don’t know where to go,” says Terry Pelz. “These guys know where to go. Most guys get caught after a few hours because they don’t have a plan. These guys planned their escape and planned it well, so it could take much longer to catch them.” Experts say there are some cardinal rules for living off the grid. “Your first priority is finding a secure place and a source of money,” says Darrin Giglio. “You don’t want anything traceable, so you’ll either have to establish a new identity or get paid off the books, maybe as a day laborer.”

Cellphone, credit cards, and surveillance cameras have added new layers of complication and possibility for both fugitives and law enforcement. “If they’re smart, fugitives can really take advantage of technology,” says Frank Ahearn, a New York-based skip-tracer turned skip-maker and author of "How to Disappear". “They can buy prepaid cellphones and credit cards. Their apartments, cars and bank accounts can be set up under anonymous corporations. They can live almost entirely virtually. That wasn’t possible in the past.” To combat such trickery, police departments have access to increasingly sophisticated and far-reaching forms of search and surveillance. “It’s easier than ever to comb through enormous amounts of data. And with surveillance cameras all over the place, the only way to avoid detection might be changing appearance. Some people even get plastic surgery,” says Giglio. “It’s like being in the witness protection program. To be successful, you have to give up your entire past. Most people can’t do that.” Under such agonizing circumstances, there is no shortage of ways to blunder. Escapees often return home or place phone calls to friends and family members, whom the police might be tracking. Other times it is an escapee’s suspicious behavior that tips off bystanders. “A lot of inmates who are legitimately released encounter a confusing new life,” says Pelz. “They don’t know how to drive cars, use cellphones, use credit cards. They need to re-educate themselves. That can trip up escapees too. Even if it’s a well-planned escape, people get sloppy.”

How US Students Get A University Degree For Free In Germany

BBC reports that Germany has abandoned tuition fees altogether for German and international students alike and more than 4,600 US students are fully enrolled at Germany universities, an increase of 20% over three years. "When I found out that just like Germans I'm studying for free, it was sort of mind blowing," says Katherine Burlingame who decided to get her Master's degree at a university in the East German town of Cottbus. "I realised how easy the admission process was and how there was no tuition fee. This was a wow moment for me." When Katherine came to Germany in 2012 she spoke two words of German: 'hallo' and 'danke'. She arrived in an East German town which had, since the 1950s, taught the majority of its residents Russian rather than English. "At first I was just doing hand gestures and a lot of people had compassion because they saw that I was trying and that I cared." She did not need German, however, in her Master's program, which was filled with students from 50 different countries but taught entirely in English. In fact, German universities have drastically increased all-English classes to more than 1,150 programs across many fields.

So how can Germany afford to educate foreign students for free? Think about it this way: it’s a global game of collecting talent. All of these students are the trading cards, and the collectors are countries. If a country collects more talent, they'll have an influx of new ideas, new businesses and a better economy. For a society with a demographic problem - a growing retired population and fewer young people entering college and the workforce - qualified immigration is seen as a resolution to the problem as research shows that 50% of foreign students stay in Germany. "Keeping international students who have studied in the country is the ideal way of immigration," says Sebastian Fohrbeck."They have the needed certificates, they don't have a language problem at the end of their stay and they know the culture."

Rick Santorum Wants the Pope To Shut Up About Climate Change

Ed Mazza writes that Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum says he loves Pope Francis, but he wants the pontiff to stop talking about climate change and "leave science to the scientists." Santorum's comments come as the pope, who holds a degree as a chemical technician and worked as a chemist before turning to the priesthood, has become increasingly vocal about climate change. “The church has gotten it wrong a few times on science, and I think that we probably are better off leaving science to the scientists," says Santorum, "and focusing on what we're really good at, which is theology and morality, When we get involved with political and controversial scientific theories, I think the church is not as forceful and credible."

But Santorum's not a scientist either so using Santorum's own logic why is Santorum more qualified than the Pope to discuss climate change? "I guess the question would be, if he shouldn’t talk about it, should you?" asked Chris Wallace of Fox News. “Politicians, whether we like it or not, people in government have to make decision with regard to public policy that affect American workers,” answered Santorum, adding that while “the pope can talk about whatever he wants to talk about,” he questions the Pope’s use of his moral authority to combat the issue of climate change.. Santorum — a devout Catholic — disagrees with the Pope’s stance that climate change is a man-made and has often called climate science “political science,” arguing that a scientific consensus on climate change underscores this point. “All of this certainty, which is what bothers me about the debate, the idea that science is settled,” says Santorum. “Any time you hear a scientist say science is settled, that’s political science, not real science.”

Apple Could Learn from Microsoft on How to Handle Security

Remember when Apple would advertise it was safer than Windows? No more. Apple is now where Microsoft was ten years ago as Jose Pagliery writes at CNN that so far in 2015, five major flaws have affected Apple products putting to rest the argument that "Apple computers are safer and bug-free." Just this week, we encountered a nasty bug that lets hackers bury computer viruses so deep inside Macs, you'll never find it. A week earlier, a flaw appeared that lets a text message crash an iPhone. Of course, fulty code is found in every operating system, app and software program but Apple has an outdated strategy for fixing them. The problem is that Apple is doing five things wrong in its approach to security: 1. Apple's security updates are irregular and infrequent. "They don't appear to have a regular patch schedule like Microsoft, nor do they appear to patch continuously like Google does with Chrome," says Tod Beardsley. "Sometimes, patches are slow to arrive, but then again, sometimes patches are difficult to develop." 2. Apple keeps quiet about its security holes. Apple didn't admit the latest Mac bug is even real (because that would entice hackers to exploit it). And while it acknowledges the text message flaw and offers advice for how to fix it, Apple hasn't explained the bug's root cause. 3. Updates are only for the latest software. If you are one of the 47% of users still on Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, and Snow Leopard, you are out of luck. 4. Unwillingness to pay. Apple is one of the only major tech companies that doesn't reward researchers -- with money -- for finding potentially disastrous computer bugs. 5. No admission of guilt. When hackers broke into celebrity iCloud accounts and exposed nude photos last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company would beef up security measures. But he blamed users, saying the problem was "not really an engineering thing."

According to researchers Apple needs to overhaul its bug-reporting system to one similar to what Microsoft did years ago. In 2003, Microsoft introduced Patch Tuesday. Once a month, users would get a flood of updates to keep them safe. According to Microsoft, sending patches only once a month simplifies patch management. Because the date is known in advance, system administrators can plan for the day. In 2005, Microsoft started hosting Blue Hat, an invitation-only security conference to meet face-to-face with curious (and often aggressive) researchers. In 2013 Microsoft introduced its "bug bounty" program and stopped fighting the legion of hackers -- and turned them into a ragtag army of Microsoft guardians. "Microsoft had worm after worm before meaningful security changes were made," says Katie Moussouris, Microsoft's former chief security strategist who implemented the bug bounty program. "Hopefully, Apple will adapt quickly."

American Pharoah Beats Science to Win Triple Crown

There are some good reasons it's been 37 years since the last triple-crown winner as Lexi Pandell wrote on June 3 that post-race recovery is no joke for a thousand-pound animal that can run more than 40 miles per hour. There are two weeks between the Derby and the Preakness, and three weeks between the Preakness and the Belmont. That tight schedule—and the super-specific needs of racehorses—means horses competing in the grueling back-to-back-to-back Triple Crown races have a big disadvantage against fresh horses. First, as a horse races, its muscles produce lactic acid. In humans, glycogen recoup takes about 24 hours. But horses take several days to process lactic acid and restore glycogen reserves. Trainers make sure their charges drink plenty of water and sometimes even use intravenous fluids to aid that repair process. Secondly, in addition to being the last race of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes is also the longest. That’s no easy feat, even for a racehorse. When a horse runs a tough race (or has a new workout at a longer distance), its muscles break down. Then, during rest, they reknit and adapt. A horse that has skipped the Preakness, however, has the luxury of time. Mubtaahij, who some picked to win the Belmont, had plenty of rest so he could be pushed for hard workouts two weeks prior to the Belmont.

Finally, at different points in its stride, a galloping horse puts all its weight on a single leg. That limb bears three times more weight than usual when galloping on a straightaway and, thanks to centrifugal force, a load five to 10 times greater on turns. This translates to skeletal microdamage. Race a horse during that critical period and you increase the risk of serious injuries mid-race. Two weeks ago, vets were forced to euthanize the promising gray thoroughbred filly, Eight Belles, when she collapsed on the track after completing the race at Churchill Downs, suffering from two shattered ankles in her front legs. A fresh horse won’t face any of those problems. Even a horse that ran in the Derby but skipped the Preakness will have five weeks to rest, and plenty of time for normal skeletal damage to repair, before the Belmont. "So, American Pharoah, it’d be awesome if you win the Triple Crown, but you probably won’t," concluded Pandell. "It’s not your fault. It’s science and those pesky fresh horses." Science was wrong.

Have Some Physicists Abandoned the Empirical Method?

Adam Frank and Marcelo Gleiser write in the NYT that two leading researchers, George Ellis and Joseph Silk, recently published a controversial piece called “Scientific Method: Defend the Integrity of Physics" that criticized a newfound willingness among some scientists to explicitly set aside the need for experimental confirmation of today’s most ambitious cosmic theories — so long as those theories are “sufficiently elegant and explanatory.” Whether or not you agree with them, Ellis and Silk have identified a mounting concern in fundamental physics: Today, our most ambitious science can seem at odds with the empirical methodology that has historically given physics its credibility:

Chief among the 'elegance will suffice' advocates are some string theorists. Because string theory is supposedly the 'only game in town' capable of unifying the four fundamental forces, they believe that it must contain a grain of truth even though it relies on extra dimensions that we can never observe. Some cosmologists, too, are seeking to abandon experimental verification of grand hypotheses that invoke imperceptible domains such as the kaleidoscopic multiverse (comprising myriad universes), the 'many worlds' version of quantum reality (in which observations spawn parallel branches of reality) and pre-Big Bang concepts. These unprovable hypotheses are quite different from those that relate directly to the real world and that are testable through observations — such as the standard model of particle physics and the existence of dark matter and dark energy. As we see it, theoretical physics risks becoming a no-man's-land between mathematics, physics and philosophy that does not truly meet the requirements of any.

Richard Dawid argues that physics, or at least parts of it, are about to enter an era of post-empirical science. "How are we to determine whether a theory is true if it cannot be validated experimentally?" ask Frank and Gleiser. "Are superstrings and the multiverse, painstakingly theorized by hundreds of brilliant scientists, anything more than modern-day epicycles?"

US Bombs ISIS Command Center After 'Moron' Posts Selfie Onli

Brian Everstine writes at Air Force Times that US intelligence officers were able to locate and bomb an Islamic State command center based on a photo and comments in social media. "The [airmen are] combing through social media and they see some moron standing at this command," said Gen. Hawk Carlisle, commander of Air Combat Command. "And in some social media, open forum, bragging about command and control capabilities for Da'esh, ISIL, And these guys go 'ah, we got an in.' So they do some work, long story short, about 22 hours later through that very building, three JDAMS take that entire building out. Through social media. It was a post on social media. Bombs on target in 22 hours."

Carlisle was careful to not go into great detail about the how the information was gathered and what additional effort went into targeting those bombs. It's easy to imagine that in addition to the information gleaned from the initial post that the Air Force used satellite and drone reconnaissance data. It's also possible that US intelligence could have actively engaged with the original poster in order to draw out information. Attackers and researchers have shown time and time again that simply asking a target for information—either by posing as a trusted individual or using carefully created phishing attacks—works even better than fancy information-stealing digital attacks.

Why American Loathe Cable Companies

Vikas Bajaj writes in the NYT that the results are in and the American Customer Satisfaction Index shows that customer satisfaction with cable TV, Internet and phone service providers have declined to a seven-year low. Of the 43 industries on which the survey solicits opinions, TV and Internet companies tied for last place in customer satisfaction. “Internet and TV have always been among the lowest scoring,” says David VanAmburg, director of the Index. “But this year they’re at the very bottom.” The study, which is based on more than 14,000 consumer surveys, gives companies a rating from 0 to 100. The ACSI reports huge drops in customer satisfaction for Comcast and Time Warner Cable, following their failed merger. Already one of the lowest-scoring companies in the ACSI, Comcast sheds 10 percent to a customer satisfaction score of 54. Meanwhile, Time Warner Cable earns the distinction as least-satisfying company in the Index after falling 9 percent to 51. Joining Time Warner Cable in the basement is ACSI newcomer Mediacom Communications (51), which serves smaller markets in the Midwest and South. “Customer service in these industries has long been bad,” says VanAmburg of Internet and TV providers. “They don’t have a good business model for handling inquiries with efficiency and respect. It goes back a decade plus.”

Even though those complaints are longstanding, customer frustration has risen along with the ever-rising prices. “You compound all that with the prices customers are paying, and that’s the final straw,” says VanAmburg. “They’re opening bills each month and saying ‘I’m paying how much?'” In an age of over-the-top viewing options like Hulu and Netflix, customer dissatisfaction may increasingly translate to companies’ bottom lines. “There was a time when pay TV could get away with discontented users without being penalized by revenue losses from defecting customers,” says Claes Fornell, chairman and founder of the Index. “But those days are over.”

Why Is It a Crime to Evade Government Scrutiny?

Dennis Hastert is about the least sympathetic figure one can imagine. The former House Speaker got filthy rich as a lobbyist trading on contacts he gained in office, his leadership coincided with Congress's abject failure to exercise oversight or protect civil liberties after the September 11 terrorist attacks, and now Hastert stands accused of improper sexual contact with a boy he knew years ago while teaching high school and trying to hide that sordid history by paying the young man to keep quiet. If federal prosecutors could meet the legal thresholds for charging and convicting Hastert of a sex crime, they would be fully justified in aggressively pursuing the matter.

Yet, as Conor Friedersdorf writes in The Atlantic, the Hastert indictment doesn’t charge him for, or even accuse him of, sexual misconduct. Rather, as Glenn Greenwald notes, “Hastert was indicted for two alleged felonies: 1) withdrawing cash from his bank accounts in amounts and patterns designed to hide the payments; and 2) lying to the FBI about the purpose of those withdrawals once they detected them and then inquired with him.” It isn’t illegal to withdraw money from the bank, nor to compensate someone in recognition of past harms, nor to be the victim of a blackmail scheme. So why should it be a crime to hide those actions from the U.S. government? The current charges could be motivated by a desire to prosecute Hastert for sex crimes. But that dodges the issue. “In order to punish him for that crime, the government should charge him with it, then prosecute him with due process and convict him in front of a jury of his peers,” says Greenwald. “What over-criminalization does is allow the government to turn anyone it wants into a felon, and thus punish them without having to overcome those vital burdens. Regardless of one’s views of Hastert or his alleged misconduct here, it should take little effort to see why nobody should want that.”
