Do all OSes end at version 10 ?

Speculation: No operating system can have a version number higher than 10.

It started with Apple Mac OS X.

Next Microsoft Windows 10. Version 10 seems perpetual. It seems there will be no Windows 11. So why not just rename it: Microsoft Windows OS X ?

Next . . . Google deserts desserts: Android 10 is the official name for Android Q

Google has officially named the next version of Android, which is due to be released this fall: Android 10. Breaking the 10-year history of naming releases after desserts, the company is bailing on providing a codename beginning with a subsequent letter of the alphabet (in this case, Q), which is the way we’ve been referring to Android up to now. This year is Android 10, next year will be Android 11, and so on.

So maybe there will be an Android 11 ?

But then, there is Linux. To complicate things, Android is built on top of Linux.

The kernel isn't past version 10. Yet. Some distributions are well past version ten.

What about other OSes? MS-DOS didn't make it past six? What about the mainframe or minicomputer era?

Maybe older systems don't count. Maybe the trend toward X is a recent 21st century thing since Apple's Mac OS X and the need to identify with it.

(now back to the study of incandescent transistors!)

Intel goes on the defensive against AMD at Gamescom

Intel has been talking up its processors at Gamescom 2019, hosting an event where it admits that AMD, its chief rival, has “done a great job closing the gap, but we still have the highest performing CPUs.”

If that sounds a little defensive to you, we agree. We were at the event in Cologne, Germany, and there was a bit of a feeling that Intel wanted to remind everyone that while AMD has been getting a lot of positive news lately thanks to its new Ryzen 3000 series of processors, when it comes to gaming, Intel still has the best processors.

At the event, Intel’s Troy Severson said that “when we introduced the i9 9900K… it was dubbed the fastest gaming CPU in the world. And I can honestly say nothing’s changed. It’s still the fastest gaming CPU in the world.”

And the finisher:

Holding an event to essentially say that ‘nothing’s changed’ and ‘we’re still the best’ felt a little odd, and we (and many others) left feeling that Intel was a bit rattled by AMD’s recent success. At one point, it even talked about how it was sending anthropologists to live with gamers to study their habits – which doesn't sound like a job we'd fancy doing.

FAA Foot Dragging on Starhopper 200 meter hop test

Aug. 13: SpaceX settles on Friday for Starhopper’s next flight test milestone, FAA permitting

Aug. 15: SpaceX’s next Starhopper flight needs more analysis for FAA go-ahead, says Elon Musk

Aug. 20: SpaceX’s next major Starhopper flight test still awaiting FAA approval, says Elon Musk

News of the next hop test’s additional delays comes some four days before Elon Musk had planned to present an updated overview of Starship and Super Heavy in Boca Chica, Texas, and it seems that both events may have to wait.

[...] According to Musk, either or both of those orbital-class prototypes could be ready for their inaugural flight tests as early as mid-September, perhaps just 1-2 months from now. Given that Starships Mk1 and Mk2 are significantly higher fidelity than Starhopper, the ungainly testbed will likely become redundant the moment that its successors are ready for flight. In other words, Starhopper is fast approaching the end of its useful life, and SpaceX’s fight for a 200m hop-test permit could ultimately be a waste of time, effort, and money if said permit doesn’t also cover Starship Mk1.

Very annoying, but hopefully the presentation on the 24th goes ahead anyway. That will be more interesting than a second hop.

There are a lot of topics that could be addressed, such as the current plan for heat shield(s), amount of engines that will be used (at least initially) on the spaceship and the booster, the type of engines (sea level, vacuum), and updated figures for tons of cargo to LEO, as well as other destinations without an in-orbit refuel. How many tons can it get to geostationary orbit without a refuel (cheaper, less complicated)?

Hong Kong protesters call for 'Mulan' boycott after star went public in support of police

Even Mulan is getting political. Liu Yifei, the Chinese-born actress starring in Disney's upcoming live-action "Mulan" remake, waded into the Hong Kong protest controversy on Thursday by expressing support for the city's police, who anti-government demonstrators accuse of using excessive force to quell unrest. "I support the Hong Kong police. You can all attack me now. What a shame for Hong Kong," she posted on Weibo, a Twitter-like Chinese social media platform.

Immediately, people began posting #BoycottMulan on Twitter -- which is banned in China. Hours later, the hashtag was trending in Hong Kong and the United States with 37,700 tweets posted at time of writing. Twitter users accused the actress of supporting police brutality, and called out the fact that she's an American citizen. "Liu is a naturalized American citizen. It must be nice. Meanwhile she pisses on people fighting for democracy," one person tweeted.

On the flip side, she also received plenty of praise on Weibo, the dominant platform in China. Nearly all the comments on her post echoed support for the Hong Kong police and Beijing.

I'll make a man out of you.

Well, two shocking incidents, in sequence, have made me question my stance on religion.

It is a well known fact that "Mexicans don't get hot". Those guys will keep on working, right through the hottest part of the day, and hardly even sweat. If you want a crew of roofers, you want to hire a bunch of Mexicans and assorted Central and South Americans.

I've known Damion (spelling?) for at least 15 years. I've often commented to him that I was hot, and I wish it would cool down. Damion always laughs at me, and comments that I'm a wimp or something. Monday, I found Damion in the break room, soaking up some air conditioning, and looking a little run down. He waves, and asks how I'm doing - I tell him it's "fucking hot", and he replied, "Yeah, it's hot."

My faith in reality was shaken. Maybe global warming really is for reals?

Then, there's Pedro. The man has been poorly abused. He was a supervisor, but the new breed of management couldn't allow him to continue as a supervisor. Not only does he speak poor English, but his supervisory style is loud, and irritates various people, such as SJW's and meek millenials. Today, Pedro is the gofer, reduced to simple labor, with no responsibility.

Anyway, Pedro was bitching about the heat this morning. "Yesterday, Jimmy sends me outside at 1:00 to spray for weeds. Asshole couldn't give me that job at 7:30 in the morning, but waits until the sun is scorching hot!"

So, in quick succession, one Mexican and one Guatemalan are complaining about the heat?

GLOBAL WARMING!!!

I may have to join the Church of Global Warming, and start praying that - uhhhh - what is it they pray for? And, to whom do they pray? Well, I guess I'll learn all the doctrine and catechism after I join.

Damn, it's hot out there.

Oh - stuff happens in threes, right? In a couple hours, when I get to work, I'll probably be confronted with a third brown man complaining about the heat. That will definitely confirm Global Warming!

SMART Modular Shows Off 256 GB Gen-Z Memory Module

SMART Modular this month demonstrated one of the industry’s first prototypes of a EDSFF 3-inch DDR4 Gen-Z memory module. The ZMM supports advanced functionality enabled by the new interface and offers throughput akin to that offered by today’s DDR4-4000 memory modules.

SMART Modular’s 256 GB ZMM uses Samsung’s 32 Gb 4-high DDR4 DRAM devices as well as IntelliProp’s Gen-Z Mamba memory controller ASSP, which supports multiple access semantics, including byte and block addressable DRAM access, in-band configuration, and access key/region key memory isolation opcodes in a bid to simplify memory access needed to handle emerging data-centric workloads. The controller features 16 Gen-Z lanes with 25 Gbps PHY as well as 400 Gbps aggregate performance. The chip requires up to 20 W of power, so it needs proper cooling.

Gen-Z.

Trump official revises Statue of Liberty poem to defend migrant rule change

A top US immigration official has revised a quote inscribed on the Statue of Liberty in defence of a new policy that denies food aid to legal migrants.

The head of Citizenship and Immigration Services tweaked the passage: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free".

The official added the words "who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge".

It comes as Trump officials debuted a regulation that denies aid to migrants.

Ken Cuccinelli, the Trump administration's acting head of Citizenship and Immigration Services, announced on Monday a new "public charge" requirement that limits legal migrants from seeking certain public benefits such as public housing or food aid, or are considered likely to do so in the future.

Missouri Walmart panic caused by armed man testing gun rights

A man who sparked panic by walking into a Walmart with a rifle and body armour told police he was testing his right to bear arms in public.

Dmitriy Andreychenko entered the shop heavily armed, days after a mass shooting at another of Walmart's stores. "I wanted to know if that Walmart honoured the second amendment," the 20-year-old told police after his arrest.

Prosecutors have charged him with making a terrorist threat. If found guilty, the charge could result in a four-year prison sentence and a fine of $10,000 (£8,300), Greene County prosecutor Dan Patterson said in a statement.

On 8 August, Mr Andreychenko entered the store "armed with an AR style rifle slung across his chest", police said, wearing a ballistic vest and recording himself. Both the rifle and a handgun he carried were loaded.

He told police he did not expect the reaction his walk generated. "This is Missouri, I understand if we were somewhere else like New York or California, people would freak out," he said, according to police filings. Days before, 20 people had been killed in a Walmart in El Paso by a gunman carrying an automatic rifle.

Dayton Shooter Invoked AOC’s ‘Concentration Camp’ Talking Points

https://therundownnews.com/2019/08/dayton-shooter-invoked-aocs-concentration-camp-talking-points/

The “concentration camp” terminology was was coined by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) in reference to ICE detention facilities. This is the second time a radical Antifa member has invoked that term before committing an act of terrorism.

Last month, a 69-year-old Antifa member, described as “indigent,” attempted to blow up an ICE facility with homemade bombs. (RELATED: Antifa ICE Bomber Invoked AOC’s ‘Concentration Camp’ Rhetoric Before Terror Attack).

I think we can all agree that the shooter in El Paso was a white supremacist, ie, a Nazi, that is, a National SOCIALIST.

So, what else are the lefties up to? Ahhh, Patchogue, New York. Good old Long Island.

‘Death Camps for Trump Supporters’ fliers hung in Long Island community

Apparently, incendiary rhetoric can fire up the party base, leading to death threats. At least that’s the case when the source of the emotionally charged language is Democratic lawmakers and the legacy media, which for months now have been accusing Donald Trump of racism, xenophobia, and other forms of bigotry.

Like the claim made on air yesterday by MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace that Donald Trump is “talking about exterminating Latinos,” there is no basis in fact for any of these allegations. But that hasn’t stirred the liberal base from becoming fired up over them.

Some in the village of Patchogue, an hour and a half outside New York City, have even taken to posting fliers on telephone polls and parking meters reading “Death Camps For Trump Supporters Now!”

I am old enough to remember when using innocuous printer’s registration marks to designate targeted electoral districts on a political map was enough to persuade the Left of former Gov. Sarah Palin’s violent intent, but that was several hundred civility-years ago.

You sane people who are left of center? You really ought to try reining in the extremists. If/when the real shooting starts, it's gonna be far, far too late. You can't talk to a man, with a shotgun in his hand - two points if you can name the song I lifted that line from.

Best Practices for Making a Right Turn while driving

How to make a right turn from a main street onto a low traffic street.
Easy Guide: For Dummies!

1. First come to a complete stop.
2. Pause for several seconds.
3. (only if driving a BMW...) if there are cars approaching from behind you, continue to wait until they either pass you or are forced to come to a complete stop behind you. The more accumulation, the better.
4. Signal for a right turn.
5. Look around to see that it is safe to make a right turn.
6. When you feel as through you are ready to proceed, then gradually begin making the right turn from the busy street you are on to the non-busy street you are turning into.
7. If any other cars that were behind you also make the same right turn, then proceed slowly and carefully.
