Hi Guys, Soylent's Editors do a lot behind the scenes to keep the community going. As a gift idea for them this year, please consider submitting lots of stories over the next two days to get the queue nice and full. Then they'll be able to schedule in their appearance on the home page ahead of time and take Christmas (or Hanukkah) off to spend time with their friends and families.
If you've never submitted a story before, here are guidelines for composing a story submission. You submit it here.
My own method is to find tech/science articles from SN's RSS-bot or a dozen other sources like the BBC or sciencenews.org, grab the title, and a couple of paragraphs that communicate the gist. Often I'll add a quip, question, or note of my own, but that's up to your personal taste. It's easy and takes under 5 minutes per story.
Thanks for reading, and have a happy holiday!
[Ed Note: The week between Christmas and New Years is always slow for submissions and time is a precious commodity for all of us. The more subs in the queue, the further out we can get the story queue, and the more time we have to spend with our loved ones. Any help you can give would be appreciated!]

What the FUCK is Hanukkah?
Hanukkah: a winter holiday that occurs before the winter solstice. According to Hebrew chronology [wikipedia.org], Hanukkah begins on Kislev 25th. During this time, many humans celebrate a myth about a war god recorded in the Scroll of Antiochus [torahlab.org]:
...The House of Chashmonai came to the Beis HaMikdash and rebuilt the gates that had been smashed and repaired the breaches in the walls; they purified the courtyard from the corpses and the impurity. They tried to find clear olive oil with which to light the Menorah, but they could only find a single jar which was sealed with the signet ring of the Kohein Gadol. They knew that it was pure, but there was only enough oil to burn for a single day. The Lord of Heaven, Who causes His name to dwell there, gave a blessing to the oil and they lit from it for eight days. (pp. 19-21)

It was reflexive. Ever since I went away to college in Chicago, and now living in New York, Christmas has been paired with Hanukkah. At first it was also twined with Kwanzaa, but that seems to have dropped off the radar (go to the heart of Harlem at Christmas time now and you cannot find any Kwanzaa merchandise). Why is that? That's really an exercise left to the reader.
Of course if you do that exercise, you might then wonder about other things, like how Israel seems to be in the headlines of every major American paper quite disproportionately to their population, economic performance, or any other index. You might wonder why nearly every Hollywood script has a Jewish character in the cast, when there are so many other cultures that could get equal time (When was the last time you saw a Dogon character in an animated children's film? How about Touareg--those guys are pretty cool).
Fair warning, though. Keep the results of that exercise to yourself. Noting obvious patterns is wrongthink and is severely punished.
