First, on behalf of the staff at SoylentNews, please accept our best wishes for a happy (and safe and healthy) holiday!

Next, here are a few quick items of note that bear calling to your attention.

Please join me in welcoming requerdanos to the editorial staff at SoylentNews! He has already jumped in with both feet and had stories appear on the main page. Welcome aboard requerdanos!

Of note, as well, takyon has not only posted 1364 stories to the site, and he has submitted just shy of 6,100 stories (as I write this it stands at 6,097 submissions... there's more(!) how about posting over 20,000 comments! Thank you SO much!

I always feel reluctant to mention anyone specifically as running this site is a team effort. I sense there are some staff who prefer to work in the background and shun the limelight. We appreciate their efforts nonetheless! Recall the early days when site crashes were a request frequent occurrence. We've come a long way from then and I count it a privilege to have worked with such knowledgeable folk who have been so generous with their time and energy!

Lastly a huge thank-you to those who responded so generously to our end-of-the-year fundraiser! As of this writing, we have had 21 subscriptions totaling $567.40 since our request went out a couple weeks ago.

In this second half of the year (July 1 through December 31) we have raised $1908.15 from 85 subscriptions towards our $3,500.00 goal. THANK-YOU!

We realize it's been a tough year for everyone; take care of your friends, family, and community first. But, if you do have the means, we'd really appreciate your subscribing and helping us to keep things going for you and our community! Please see this comment to our previous story for step-by-step instructions on how to subscribe.

Why subscribe? Why not? Besides, you'll get all the benefits listed on the "SoylentNews - Why Subscribe?".

NB: If you'd prefer, you can subscribe anonymously. There's an option to make a gift subscription, as well. For any questions or difficulty, please reach out on IRC, send an email to admin@soylentnews.org, or just post a comment to this story.

Thank you!

The year is winding to a close so I thought it would be a good opportunity to catch up on a few things:

  1. Milestones
  2. Community questions answered
  3. Background on site operations
  4. Story Cadence
  5. Site finances

Having been born before this Jesus dude, I tend not to celebrate the holey days of these new-aged religions, but Happy Winter Solstice a few days late. And with the Grand Conjunction, the prospects for the coming year are good. Even SN has been showing signs of increased rationality and reality lately! Thanks, Editors and Admins, and all who contribute, in whatever fashion, to keeping the soylent in SoylentNews.

I can answer that. I used to subscribe the people who run the site in order to donate, I used to send gift certificates for equipment. Large sums, because I use and enjoy the site, and I got the sums as spare change.

so here's why not. the quality of the articles has become absolute shit, and the "editors" whatever that means, are to blame. We get 10 articles in a row from some idiot reading another news aggregator on nature - about whales, about some native tribe on an island, about bird feather lift. bland boring shit, and the whole page is filled with them. Those articles are submitted by the bland boring person, probably one after another as he skims some nature blog. now that this crap fills the page, mission accomplished, now "discuss." no thanks.

I see people complain that they submit their shit, it sits in some queue for a month, and then gets rejected. I'm going to assume those are the interesting articles. I myself have submitted very few, but same story - pending for a month then rejected. And at least my stuff - well it's definitely tech, it's definitely interesting and useful, and it's nothing to do with bird migrations. What do the "editors" respond with when people complain? I usually see the excuse that it's a lot of work, and they can only get so many done.

It's not a lot of work. It's 10 minutes of work per day go glance at a submission and approve. You're not an editor - you're a spam filter. You don't need to read and understand the article - you need to glance at the title and summary and see if it's appropriate for here. Whale blubber is not. But instead here's the way it works now: a few submitters who submit absolute bland shit just get approved without the "editor" reading, and we get trash on the front page.

so, if we look at donations as cash we give for content, I'm not paying for this shit content we've been getting in about the last year. No, the solution is not more "editors." It's a dog to randomly hit keys on the keyboard to pick articles, because lemme tell ya, that pooch would do a better job, and I'd gladly pay for his dogfood.

so why not subscribe? actually the question is why subscribe. there used to be a reason, now there's not. you want to keep the quality as it is? that's perfectly fine too - it's your site. but a bland site like that, and there are thousands like that, is trash that runs on ads. sites that run on donations only work if they aren't bland shit.

and why yes, I am indeed a complete jackass.

I'll add to that that with all the Covid / Health / Politics articles we have been served (not necessarily the editors' fault, because many tech-active regions have been under a two-weeks-to-flatten-the-curve lockdown for 10 months by now), Leftists here have organized themselves into a downmod mob that Rightists don't have the time or initiative to effectively counter.

Combined with the way moderation works on this site, it is too easy to "cancel" opinions. And contributing to enabling a nascent, yet another, Leftist cancel-culture playground is not something I'm particularly enthusiastic about.

We get 10 articles in a row from some idiot reading another news aggregator on nature - about whales, about some native tribe on an island, about bird feather lift.

I remember times, in the not-distant past, when the subs queue was empty, and the editors were collectively scrambling to come up with a couple stories to post.

You didn't name names, but I feel you are referring to me.

I don't subscribe to a nature blog, as you suspect. Instead, I have an RSS reader installed on my desktop. https://lzone.de/liferea/ [lzone.de]

I skim the feeds, looking for things that interest me, to greater and lesser degrees. Those that catch my interest, I submit. I do little filtering. Nature, science, tech, industry, some of the legal disputes that will interest techies, tech history, archeology, evolution, ecology, military tech, transportation tech - those are all fodder for discussion, IMO.

Anyone can do similar, I think. It takes a little time to populate the feeds with at least marginally interesting sources, but not much. When you stumble across some site with a few interesting articles, add it to the RSS reader. As I say, anyone can do as much - and I invite everyone to do so.

All I can say is, I'll continue as I have been doing, unless and until others fill the queue with more interesting stories. When the subs queue page overflows into a second page, then I'll get more discriminating.

Besides - I like whales! And puppies. Expect a puppy sub soon! No kittens though. TMB can do a kitty sub if he likes.

I don't care about the opinions of someone who felt the need to harass and impersonate creimer for months on end for his own personal entertainment. It wouldn't surprise me if you're behind the spam/impersonation accounts here, too. Most of the stories don't get posted because they require substantial editing to go from the raw article text to an actual summary. If you want your stuff accepted, edit it yourself.

That said, I do have real objections with how the site is run. Admins and editors should feel the need to set an example of civility and not post factually incorrect or offensive BS. Most do exactly that, but not all. Being an admin shouldn't mean you can say and do whatever the hell you want. Yes, you're contributing your time, and I appreciate that. But you have the ability to work on this project you believe in because of the generous contributions from subscribers. Posting snide replies to your users, some of whom financially back this site, only drives those people away from subscribing in the future.

The lameness filter is out of control, being modified to ban posting of specific spam text, but also blocking some legitimate comments. Although it's not as heavy-handed as Slashdot's filters, it's headed in that direction. The volume of comments isn't that high on this site. The editors could easy use unlimited spam mod points to eliminate actual crapfloods, yet refuse to take this common sense action. Instead, we get our comments blocked with highly unprofessional messages about "douchebaggery quotients" and things like that. No, I don't want spam. But I don't want an increasingly onerous lameness filter, either. If editors can examine the database for all instances of duplicate spam messages, they're more than capable of handing out mass spam mods as needed.

I previously submitted an unposted story, which describes more concerns with the direction of the site: https://soylentnews.org/submit.pl?op=viewsub&subid=43772 [soylentnews.org]. Lameness filters don't solve the problems, they just create challenges that a sufficiently persistent person can defeat.

I have subscribed in the past. If things improve, I will consider subscribing in the future. But I'm going to sit out subscribing this time because of the direction the site has taken in the past six months. I'm not the only person to voice these criticisms. Taking them seriously would lead me to consider perhaps subscribing in the future. On the other hand, more snide remarks like those I mentioned already will guarantee that I don't subscribe again.

I was indeed two of those. let's not forget my glorious ex coworker and the others who joined me to distribute gay porn with creimer's contact details all over hundreds of image sharing sites. glorious.

this is what that fucker deserved for spamming articles and taking them to offtopic discussion about his diet, in order to sell his shitty self-published books. hundreds of people were complaining, annoyed by him, and wanted him to stop spamming offtopic bullshit. he proudly told everyone to fuck off, and that he was somehow creating a rich paradise for himself by getting people to buy his shit. and btw, it drew enough attention to him that he was banned from the site. you anger the crowd you're in, they maul over you. justice served.

and then we got you, every couple of months complaining about how unfairly that fat asshole was treated. are you his butt-buddy? did big puma go limp after that incident and you miss nibbling on his neck tire? you're gonna be ok buddy. you'll find another fat bald white man to give you some winter lovin - just hand on little one.

So, let me get this straight, you were so bothered by creimer's spam that you felt the need to carry out a much larger spam campaign. You were so obsessed with creimer that you felt the need to spam Slashdot for months and make the comments virtually unreadable for anyone wishing to have a serious discussion. You and your buddies clearly have some serious mental health issues, given that you were willing to spam Slashdot and post obscene images claiming to be of him across multiple sites. The fact that you are still bragging about this shows that you're still a total loser. If you were willing to do that on Slashdot, it would be totally in character for you to impersonate people here [soylentnews.org], too. You didn't exactly deny that, either. Since you don't like it here anyway, how about you take your spam and your harassment, and GTFO.

you got that backwards. every thread fatty creamer was on, he turned into a discussion about his shit life, and very openly admitted it was to draw attention to himself, so he gets "revenue streams" to his amazon page and gets sales. people kept getting more and more pissed off, bitching him out, making fun of him. He just kept going.

So after that, people had enough, and a bunch of us decided to get him off. first with the gay porn spread all over the web, then with the parody accounts. they weren't "impersonations" - they were very clearly not him. I don't deny making like 10 of the fag memes, I don't deny posting from two of those parody accounts - because i forgot the password to one and created another. there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, and it got the job done.

as far as months - yeah. I literally enjoyed shitting on that fucker and getting him off the site. about 80% of that entertainment for me was done while sitting on the toilet taking a shit. it was a fun time.

how about i take what you define as spam, i take away your little safespace, and i keep shitting down your open and ready mouth. how about you and anything you say doesn't matter and has zero weight.

I'm not nice, that's true, but if you picked a random internet site and decided people have to be nice to you there - no one gives a fuck what you think or decide. when someone says something wrong or dumb, it's perfectly fine to laugh at them. but that's not what i'm here for. that's just how i talk with no rules. what i am here for, is discussion of tech, and in many posts i bring over 20 years of industry experience at literally most of the fortune100 companies. and when the topic of a post isn't tech, then I entertain myself by making fun of shit. what you're here for is a friendly discussion about nothing. that's unfortunate for you - maybe you should start your own site where you make the rules.

I previously submitted an unposted story, which describes more concerns with the direction of the site: https://soylentnews.org/submit.pl?op=viewsub&subid=43772. [soylentnews.org] Lameness filters don't solve the problems, they just create challenges that a sufficiently persistent person can defeat.

I glanced over the complaint and am underwhelmed. First, there's the complaint about people "impersonating" others, "wishing harm on others", and spamming. Only the last of which seems a serious problem here.

What I've seen of impersonation is pretty innocuous. Something like "khallow 2.0" or "khallow sucks ass" which tries to feebly mock the original. Now if it were say "khalIow" which could in certain fonts look almost exactly the same, then we might be talking impersonating of an odious sort. But even then, I'd be more concerned about behavior than the name. If the impersonator keeps showing up in the threads of the original in such a way that the two are easily confused, then that's spam and would fall under the purview of category three. And it'd be easy to correct via administrative tools.

As to wishing harm on others, what exactly should SN do about that? For example [soylentnews.org]

May you be cursed to live 400 years, forced to eat bug paste and breathe through a machine because the air quality is incompatible with life, all because we've let ourselves be led around by psychopaths who are a decade or two from certain death themselves.

        What's the punishment here?

Administrators have used their access in very questionable ways such as publicly divulging information related to IPIDs. These are recorded to investigate troubleshooting issues but publicly sharing information derived from this calls into question the commitment to respecting user privacy. I have chosen not to link to examples in order to avoid calling out specific users.

One of the problems with doing anything about the problems you just described. The power can be abused.

A lameness filter was apparently added without the knowledge of other administrators [soylentnews.org]. Although this particular filter blocks a word that is unquestionably awful, the ability of any admin to add filters seemingly without the approve or even the knowledge of other admins opens the door to any censorship including squelching disagreement.

The lameness filter always existed - it came with the initial code. And that ability can be taken away by other administrators, if it is abused.

As to the aristarchus entries in the submission queue, you've already stated that administrators are relatively good at dealing with spam. Well, that happens to be what aristarchus entries are. It's a solved problem being solved. And what exactly is the problem with the junk you mentioned staying in the queue? Unless someone approves it, it's not going anywhere.

Simply put, why do the administrators employ extremely inconsistent standards that are allowing this site to devolve into toxicity? The people who contribute money through subscriptions deserve a cogent answer to these questions. There is precedent for posting similar submissions [soylentnews.org] so I hope the editors will apply the same standard here.

just because you claim there are "extremely inconsistent standards" doesn't make them so. Meanwhile, you're not a subscriber and haven't done anything to deserve that cogent answer you claim to want.

That is 100% false. I have subscribed twice, both times paying $20 and gifting the subscriptions to other users. Since I've put my name on an email to the admins to report more lameness filter issues, they are also more than capable of verifying that I have, indeed, subscribed twice. Just because I'm an AC and choose to gift my subscriptions to other users does not mean that I haven't subscribed. I gifted one subscription to Knowledge Troll, the other to martyb.

The lameness filter that generates the "douchebaggery quotient" message did not come with the original code. Yes, there has been a lameness filter in Slash for at least a couple of decades. In fact, it's a variety of filters that detect certain types of abusive comments. In this case, new filters have been added to block some of APK's spam. The problem is that the filters aren't effective and cause more harm than good. In fact, APK has posted antisemitic spam as recently this month and can modify his comments to evade the filters. Meanwhile, there are false positives that block innocuous comments. Both Slashdot and SN have modified the filters since the code was forked. Slashdot apparently now blocks the word "Nazi" and that has the effect of stifling legitimate non-abusive discussion about Nazis.

The other filter I referenced was also discussed by Bot in his journal [soylentnews.org] and TMB explicitly acknowledged [soylentnews.org] that someone else was modifying the lameness filters.

The solution to the spam cannot be worse than the problem. I see Slashdot's extremely onerous lameness filter as the end result if more filters keep getting added to block undesired text. I do believe that SN is still better than Slashdot, which is why I still read and post here, but rarely read Slashdot now.

As I said, I think SN has headed in the wrong direction during the past six months, which is why I'm not subscribing this time. If things improve, I am open to reconsidering and purchasing another subscription in a future six month period. It's not personal, this is just my way of expressing my opinions to the editors. They're free to accept or reject any part of what I've said. They own the site and it's their right.

I purchased a gift subscription in August, basically four and a half months ago. I paid $20, which is the price for a one year subscription. That's the second one year subscription I purchased in 2020. The subscription I purchased in August is part of the running total on SN's front page toward this six month goal. Saying that's not current enough is absurd. It actually is 100% false to say I am not a subscriber.

In terms of the text that triggered the lameness filter, it seems I'll have to split it across two posts to get it to post. I attempted to post this election night. Here goes (1/2):

Trump just lied to declare victory and indicated that continuing to count votes in states where he's ahead would make this election illegitimate. This is a disgrace. Absolutely nobody should defend the bullshit that just came from the White House. It's no surprise that it happened but it doesn't make it any less hideous. Trump wants counting to continue in Arizona, where he's behind. But he wants counting to stop in the states where he's ahead. That's wrong.

All of the votes must be counted. All of them. If state law allows absentee votes to arrive a few days late provided they were postmarked by election day, those votes should count. There is nothing illegitimate about those votes. Anyone who claims that those votes are fraudulent is lying. Trump has attempted to block funding for USPS, explicitly saying it was for the purpose of hindering people from voting by mail. While the Constitution allows Trump to veto legislation with funding for USPS, he has made his intentions very clear. He knows that Democrats were more likely to vote by mail so he's attempting to suppress those votes. But if the votes are cast in a manner consistent with state law, they must be counted.

If all of the votes in every state are counted and those votes favor Trump winning re-election, we must accept the decision of the American people. If all of the votes are counted and Trump wins, there shouldn't be any rioting or looting from people on the left. If all the votes are counted and the outcome favors Trump, then Trump has won fair and square.

                And here's the rest (2/2):

If Trump is successful in stopping votes from being counted, the election is not legitimate. Count the damn votes. If Trump is ahead when all the votes are counted, everyone should accept Trump as the winner. If Biden is ahead when all the votes are counted, everyone should accept Biden as the winner. If some votes aren't counted, the election cannot be considered fair.

Even Rick Santorum, who usually defends Trump, refuted Trump's comments. Santorum explained that vote counting in Pennsylvania has paused for the night because people need to sleep to make sure they count the votes accurately. He said that there are cameras monitoring where the votes are being counted to prevent fraud. Santorum insisted that counting must continue in Pennsylvania and all other states where not all the votes have been counted.

This isn't about red and blue, R and D. Everyone should agree that all the votes must be counted. This shouldn't be controversial with anyone.

Again, there's no valid reason that this text should trip the lameness filter. I've twice emailed SN about this, once last month, then again yesterday. It is still a problem. It is a false positive.

I strongly dispute TMB's claim that one must be as much of a douche as APK to trigger the filter. Apparently trying to have a civil discussion about the election also does so.

Yes, the text is out of date. I attempted to post it election night. However, if you merge the two parts of the comment together and attempt to post it, you can expect it will trip a lameness filter for some reason.

Actually, come to think of it, I'm pretty sure I bought a subscription for Knowledge Troll back in February or March, right before he abandoned his account and started posting AC. It was right after COVID started surging in the US. And I bought a subscription for martyb right after one of JMH's conspiratorial rants that attacked him. So I'm pretty sure one of my $20 subscriptions is counted in the total on the front page. I do not regret purchasing either subscription. So I misremembered when I purchased the subscriptions.

And no, I'm not entitled to answers from the staff. Neither are you. Customers aren't entitled to control how management runs their business. We can express our concerns and our frustrations, but the managers and owners get to decide how to run their business. And customers can choose whether or not to continue giving their money to the business. TMB and martyb don't owe me answers. They can choose whether or not to provide those answers and I can choose whether or not to subscribe in the future. I'm not opposed to subscribing again, I just want to see things turn around.

To be honest, I'm concerned that the site is dying, given that the number of stories has been scaled back quite a bit and most of the discussion seems to take place in journals with political topics. I hope not. I don't have the means right now to volunteer and help things turn around. That would have a far greater impact than chipping in an extra $20 for the site, but I couldn't commit to that given my situation right now.

I've been here since the very beginning (I've only got an account number in the high 200s because I'm based in Oz and was asleep when signups opened), so I have a bit of a perspective on this. The stories have always been a mix of interesting and kinda lame; same with the green site, same with every single other news site. No news aggregator can win: the exhortation to make the news more interesting is what leads to bullshit like clickbait and junk articles. I prefer SN's eclectic mix of stories that appeal to diverse interests to bullshit like Buzz Feed's. And don't forget, the submission queue also benefits from your submissions. Don't like it? Change it!

That said, the draw of SN isn't really really the news itself, so much as these discussions about the news. "Discuss" is what we're here for. It's a place where people of sometimes aggressively disparate viewpoints can debate (even intelligently!) and express opinions. The moderation tools function well enough to keep the peace so that a decent conversation can take place. An early rallying cry of SN and the wider Fuck Beta movement was "We are not an audience". Don't like it? Get involved!

this is one of the better communities, but connecting your point to mine: you see how there's a bunch of nonsense stories about nothing, with like 5 comments, and other normal ones with 40-100? how about half the day's page being filled with those 5 comment stories. there's nothing to discuss. and the thing is, there are plenty of good stories being submitted. they don't make it through, because it's easier for an "editor" to just approve 10 in a row from the same nature blog retard, than to actually read the titles and summary of all the other ones coming in.

here's an idea: for 1 week, let them replace the editors with a random number generator, and literally pick 20 stories per day at random all from different users, from the submission queue. I am almost positive the quality of stories would go up. then we can have a conversation about how to increase quality long-term. the first step is to show the "editing" job makes things worse than not doing it at all.

No, I don't want to staff up - I got my own work building enterprise SANs. I do have opinions which you are free to completely ignore, because, again, you run this, not me.

Literally, the result I am most interested in seeing is hacker news, without the power tripping incel mod deleting half the content. The quality and topics of articles there are great. Here, it used to be, now it's like freshly squeezed oj, glass half filled with tap water.

The fuckdot had this issue, and they tried having the community pick stories - firehose. badly done. but a good way would be to show the whole queue to the public, sorted by age, and have people upvote a story they want to see. whatever is the top story every hour gets posted that hour for discussion. and I'd actually donate quite a bit to have someone to write that code, or something that tries to fix this 2020 blandness. in a year you'll have to fight some fucker's upvote script, but that's a problem for future you.

the site is good. you're good ethical people. you're doing a shit job with the content this whole year. which again is only my opinion of what i want to read, and maybe the masses don't agree. what I do notice is comments of people complaining about good stories being rejected, and thinking - I'd rather see that right now, as I'm reading yet another bird article. And you guys always respond the same - it's a lot of work, we're doing our best in our spare time. Best in 2020 means "blindly accept a bunch of absolute shit from the same 4 people." If you're going to do that, just write a script to pick at random - it'll get better results.

but no, i don't want to spend my time as a spam filter for stories. i just want to read and discuss interesting shit, while being mean to people who are wrong. dats-all.

Slashdot is worse off for your spamming. But you had ample time to do that.

Many stories don't get posted because the editors don't have time to go through and edit bot submissions that contain the full text of articles. If you had time to spam Slashdot, you have time to edit your own stories once in awhile and submit them to the queue. If users edit their own stories, it means there's less work for the editors, and they can post more stories. I've noticed that when I edit stories myself, editors tend to post them very quickly, and they jump ahead of many other submissions. If you think a particular story should be posted, edit it yourself, and it will probably be posted almost right away. You're not doing that, so I see no grounds for you to complain.

Let's review the story submissions for 2020 made by fakefuck39, shall we? It won't take long since there have only been two.

First we have this insightful gem:
get some extra screen space in firefox [soylentnews.org]
I think it speaks for itself why the editors chose to not run that as a front page story.

      The remaining submission was:
Data corruption making it into enterprise SAN [soylentnews.org]
At least this one was a little bit more interesting. Unfortunately the submission makes a lot of unsubstantiated claims, and provides no proof or corroboration.

      For example consider the following:

The problem with this, is SHA does not have perfectly random distribution. We don't know what the distribution is, but we do realize that in no way is it fully random - this means some blocks are a lot more likely to hit the same hash, resulting in data corruption.

Unfortunately fakefuck39 provides no substantiation for this claim.

The rest of the submission is similar. For example:

Here's what happens when someone asks the vendor directly about it: they brush it off and close comments. This one is from 2017 https://www.dell.com/community/XtremIO/SHA-1-Collision-and-XtremIO-ProofOfConcept/td-p/7122078 [dell.com] [dell.com]

The link is a vendor community page, not a vendor support portal or support ticket, and the topic is still open for discussion if anyone wants to reply.

A quick glance at the submission guidelines should be all you need to see why this story was rejected by the editors as well.

if you need substantiation of the claim that you can't uniquely compress a 4k block to a 160bit sha1, you need to finish your highschool programming class, then come back and talk to us. since you clearly haven't worked for a company before, the community discussion forum is where you ask that. you cannot open a vendor support case asking them to redesign the storage array you just bought. you absolute highschool teenager who builds PCs.

you also seem to need substantiation of sha1 not having perfectly random distribution. seriously, I have to ask, what are you doing on a tech site? to put it in terms you understand, let's say you submit a story about milkshakes. you talk about how there are chocolate ones and vanilla ones, with different ratios of ice cream to milk. then some idiot asks you for the source of milkshakes having ice cream.

I gotta know - please do answer. are you at the mall right now? are you sitting at the mall with your friends with purple hair, in a black tshirt, waiting for the movie to start? or are you a completely daft older guy who has not written a line of code in their life, who looks at laptop specs from a catalog, so feels he's "IT" enough to comment on hashing functions and deduplication?

literally by your own definition I don't. winning my ideal life means traveling and seeing the world - at 41yo, I've lived in several countries and visited about 40. i've lived in several states and visited 49. it's my entire family being completely financially secure - as in pay off the parent's house, support my younger siblings while they get on their feet, repair my sister's house when it falls apart, send my nephew to a good school. it's getting lots and lots of sex with hot young girls so I could get that out of my system before settling down and getting married, and having a very large pool to select my wife from, so I could get exactly what I want. It's having an emergency fund of 10 years of living expenses if I can't work, and enough saved for retirement so I can live off the interest alone. It's helping people with charity and helping people in need get good jobs - I pissed away a good mil on that over the years. It's growing as a person by seeing the world and not thinking inside the box I was born in.

for you, it's fishing on a lake. and that's totally cool. what you don't get is when you claim "you win at life" - you only win at your own life. for a general statement like that, "life" is not your life - it's society's life. and at that, while being a good person, you lose. Which is perfectly fine, just your claim is clown-level stupid.

You defined your perfect life as the one you got now. But that's not life in general. That's just the little box you live in. Or for a better comparison, the well The Mighty Frog lives in.

so really think about this. yes, I got a shitload of time - i've been laid off and just bumbling around europe w/ my wife. i got nothing to do but look at the black sea right now and buy beef at the farmer's market. but there's baggage here that comes with this account. it would be more productive, for you, to just get cash for development help. i know, materialistic shit. but it's about results you want, and shit costs money sometimes. not the really important shit, but this is "entertainment" shit, not important shit.

think a few days, then let me know. if you still want this, i'll give it a roll. but if it ruins the discussion, i'm out of the human spam filter business and no hard feelings.

I'd hire you, as long as your spam filter removes all of your comments too. Starting with yours. And remembering you. Forever. And sells the filter data to all other blogs / boards. No, gives it away, free.

I see, so you, a guy whose account karma is downvoted so low by the readers here, that you have to resort to AC just to write more than 4 comments per day, will hire me for this site whose readers prevent you from writing comments, to improve the comment quality of this site?

cool. buy the buzztard a $1000 subscription. this site, which upvotes me and downvotes you into oblivion, is always happy to gave your cash. If you do that, I guarantee I will not make fun of a single person here for a year, get my entertainment on techdirt instead.

I don't get/have to live anyone else's life, so of course it's only considering mine. Sounds to me like you have some serious issues with materialism and envy.

yes yes, people who want to be secure and stable even if they can't work for health or other reasons, take care of their family and siblings and parents, be able to see the world and travel - they have serious issues with materialism. that's the explanation that's reasonable. because if it's not, you would be a complete loser at this life of yours. but you're a winner buddy, so it's got to be the materialism thing.

tell me, if you get cancer and are in bed for 10 years, eating up about 250k/year in finances, too sick to work and on meds. how are you, your kids, and your wife doing at that point? any younger siblings who haven't made it yet and are in debt, and need a helping hand - how are they doing now? how about you wake up and there's fire around you, and you can't walk or see again? you still enjoying that boat?

If all of that first paragraph is true, I'm quite impressed. But you exude much ire, negativity, and unhappiness, so I'm sad for you. But maybe you vent it all out here, and you're otherwise happy? Or maybe you're building up your unhappiness here; maybe it's not therapeutic for you (or anyone else) but reinforcing the negativity?

I'm here to be an asshole. I don't hide it - that's what anonymous internet forums are for, and it is helpful to have an outlet for that. You being sad or happy for me is irrelevant - your opinion on anything is irrelevant. You're confusing comments on an internet forum with talking to a group of people. They're not.

      Me too.

The world was a simpler (and perhaps better?) place when the ITS crash system command was a useful feature:
