The date, time, and place for the upcoming SoylentNews PBC meeting mentioned in a previous meta post from Tuesday, July 25th were announced today:

  • Date and Time: Monday, July 31 at 1:30pm PDT (4:30pm EDT / 8:30pm UTC)
  • Place: #meeting on irc.soylentnews.org (SoylentNews IRC)

More details:

The upcoming meeting will be to nominate one or more qualified candidates to serve on the Board. The PBC exists to define what and how SoylentNews will be and to enforce that vision. Ultimately the Board is responsible for the high-level oversight that ensures the bylaws are fulfilled. The purpose of the expansion is to include more voices from the community so they will be directly represented in the decision making [affecting] the community. The next meeting will be held over IRC and will be answering and addressing your questions and concerns from any of the comments posted in this article.

For further information, see the previous meta post.

Community participation is essential, so I hope we'll see as many of you there as possible.

Upcoming SoylentNews PBC Meeting 48 comments

I wanted to post a reminder to the community that the SoylentNews PBC has it’s upcoming meeting at the end of July on the 31st ( #meeting on irc.sylnt.us @ 1:30 PDT - web access via https://irc.staging.soylentnews.org/ ). I believe that this event is the continuation and result of a very hard push by myself and others to bring about necessary changes to the management and structure of SoylentNews.

Post a log when its over. I bet a lot of people can't attend. That's IRL, there's never a time that'll work for everyone. I'd be mildly interested in reading the log.

All the main channel IRC logs exist here, https://logs.sylnt.us/%23soylent/ [sylnt.us] I'm assuming the Monday meeting will be as well(?)

For example, here's the one from yesterday, https://logs.sylnt.us/%23soylent/2023-07-28.html [sylnt.us]
I searched for prof (start of "proffer") to see some discussion on the PBC meeting.

There is a bot named "Loggie" that handles the logging you are referring to. Hopefully whomever is responsible for the Loggie bot will make sure that it's been added to the channel prior to the meeting.

Are there any disqualifications from being considered for the board?
Can we nominate people in this discussion if we won't be attending the meeting?
If so I would like to nominate all the editors. They do a lot to keep this site running and obviously have its best interests at heart.
    Also:
    Arik
    Takyon
    paulj72
    ElizabethGreene
and a bunch more I will think of later.

If you want participation make it a planned and efficient meeting. The agenda should also be logical, implying that it has to address the elephant in the room first: How can the broken relationship with the staff be repaired? More so, if it is true that changes were made to the infrastructure without ahead notice to admins, if access of staff was blocked without deliberation and rationale, I see this as failed leadership calling for resignation of those responsible and those having endorsed those actions.

It would certainly be good to hear a lot more detail regarding this rationale. All I've seen so far is vague references to closing security vulnerabilities (If you're going to shut down staff functions, regardless of the reason, shouldn't you roll out the intended replacement for such functions immediately?) and, well, there was an accusation that someone might wipe the whole system out of spite.

If ever there was a time transparency, diplomacy and detailed communication were needed, it is now.

I wish luck and all the best to all involved.

Well, I tried, but it was an unfamiliar IRC client (apologies for the nick changes) , and I had a few ping timeouts.

As for democracy in a place without city limits or clear concept of citizenship, I think that's tough.

I'd probably try and rank voting strength by age of account and number of articles and number of upvotes on comments, so that people who have been around for a while and contribute positively (as ranked by the rest of the community) get more of a say. Staff members and editors should also get more of a say.

Something like: number of votes = (Age of account in days started) x (1 + Number of articles accepted for publication) x (1 + (Total positive karma - Total negative karma)) x (1 + Number of days started as a Staff Member)x(Staff weighting factor)

But at least it looks like civilised discussion was taking place, which is good. I hope it was sufficiently productive.
