USA Today reports Trump has Officially Begun to Withdraw the US From the World Health Organization as Pandemic Spikes:

The Trump administration has officially begun to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization, even as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to grip the globe and infections spike in many states across the U.S.

Congress received formal notification of the decision on Tuesday, more than a month after President Donald Trump announced his intention to end the U.S. relationship with the WHO and blasted the multilateral institution as a tool of China. The White House said the withdrawal would take effect on July 6, 2021.

[...] The formal withdrawal comes as the United States nears 3 million reported coronavirus cases and more than 130,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data. Globally, there have been 11.6 million cases and almost 540,000 deaths.

Trump to Halt Funding to WHO 278 comments

BBC: Coronavirus: US to halt funding to WHO, says Trump

US President Donald Trump has said he is going to halt funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) because it has "failed in its basic duty" in its response to the coronavirus outbreak.

[...] Mr Trump has been under fire for his own handling of the pandemic.

He has sought to deflect persistent criticism that he acted too slowly to stop the virus's spread by pointing to his decision in late January to place restrictions on travel from China.

[...] The US is the global health body's largest single funder and gave it more than $400m in 2019.

A decision on whether the US resumes funding will be made after the review, which Mr Trump said would last 60 to 90 days.

[...] China gave about $86m in 2018-19; UK gives most of any country apart from the US

[...] The organisation launched an appeal in March for $675m to help fight the pandemic and is reported to be planning a fresh appeal for at least $1bn.

Trump Threatens to Take US Out of WHO Entirely and Stop All US Funding 202 comments

Trump threatens to take US out of WHO entirely and stop all funding:

In a letter to WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Trump alleged that "the repeated missteps by you and your organization in responding to the pandemic have been extremely costly for the world" and that the WHO must "demonstrate independence from China."

"[I]f the World Health Organization does not commit to major substantive improvements within the next 30 days, I will make my temporary freeze of United States funding to the World Health Organization permanent and reconsider our membership in the organization," Trump wrote. "I cannot allow American taxpayer dollars to continue to finance an organization that, in its present state, is so clearly not serving America's interests."

Trump posted the letter on Twitter, writing, "It is self-explanatory!"

Trump has repeatedly denied any responsibility for COVID-19 spreading in America and said on April 14 that the US would temporarily halt funding the WHO until his administration completed a review of the group's response to the coronavirus pandemic. Trump's letter yesterday said that "review has confirmed many of the serious concerns I raised last month and identified others that the World Health Organization should have addressed, especially the World Health Organization's alarming lack of independence from the People's Republic of China."

[...] Trump's letter then lists a series of claims, the first being that the WHO "consistently ignored credible reports of the virus spreading in Wuhan in early December 2019 or even earlier, including reports from the Lancet medical journal."

The Lancet quickly issued a response explaining that Trump is wrong. "This statement is factually incorrect," The Lancet said. "The Lancet published no report in December, 2019, referring to a virus or outbreak in Wuhan or anywhere else in China." The Lancet's first reports on the topic were published on January 24, 2020 the statement said.

[...] Trump's letter yesterday said, "Throughout this crisis, the World Health Organization has been curiously insistent on praising China for its alleged 'transparency.'" Trump's letter did not mention that Trump himself praised China for its "transparency" on January 24 or that Trump repeatedly praised China for its coronavirus response throughout February.

[...] Health experts say Trump's travel ban had little effect on the pandemic's spread. Trump continued to downplay the virus's severity by comparing it to the flu as late as March 24, nearly two months after the WHO declared a global health emergency. Trump has also fought state governors over their cautious approaches to reopening the economy.

the WHO and blasted the multilateral institution as a tool of China

I was unaware the newspeak definition of multilateral is now "Chinese propaganda outlet".

Multilateral used to mean something like "having contributors from several groups or different countries".

Lotta people died because the WHO didn't want China to "lose face" and some Chinese donors personally enriched some WHO officials. Just doesn't seem worth it.

I don't feel there's much to mourn about the WHO. Someone else will do the rare good stuff they used to do, and someone else will take Chinese money in exchange for propaganda (like Reddit, for example).

According to whom, Democrat voters? Remember, about half the country reliably votes Republican, and they're happily supporting Trump no matter how badly he screws things up. And according to them, *not* supporting Trump or being loyal to him means you're anti-American, traitorous, etc.

It'll be interesting to see what happens in November, but I'm not placing any bets for Biden (or Trump for that matter). We've seen this too many times: the Dems pick a lousy candidate, think they have the election in the bag because the other guy is even worse (according to them, because they just can't understand the GOP voters), and then they lose and wonder why. Just watch what happens this election; the Dems will talk about lofty, high-minded concepts like "unity", "competence", etc., but they just can't seem to understand that Republican voters don't care about those things, and wouldn't know competence in government if it slapped them in the face.

It's not that they don't understand competence, that's again projection from the Democrats. They just have a fundamentally different view of government. Wrong, it is about 12%, the dead-enders who supported Bush when it became obvious what a traitor he was. The rest of the Republican vote is not reliable, and probably gone for the next go round. And, it is not even half of the American population, let alone half of the qualified American population, that votes, let alone votes Republican. They are a very small number of very stupid people, who watch Fox News, and they are very old, so Covid-19 will thin their numbers, and the Republican party will never again hold office in America. They are the next Whigs. Death-eating party that is dead. You vastly overestimate your numbers, which will become apparent if you are foolish enough to try anything that requires numbers. Liberals are only good shots when they're paying someone else to hold the guns for them (usually, the police). Note that I don't say "better" shots than conservatives; I'd sooner trust a gun-toting conservative to hold a gun because they're maybe experienced enough with them not to limp-wrist it, or hold it sideways.

Also, to say that the civil war era is reflective of the modern demographics of society insofar as it can predict a particular skill is laughable.

That all said, I agree that conservatives are far outnumbered, and growing more so every day. I've been distressed to think that social progress is a function of generational turnover which necessarily depends on the passing of the older people with strong toxic opinions. They're not so numerous, but they have lots of money to contribute to propaganda and they have the time to go through the whole voting process, at every level, every single time. I don't like thinking of them as a burden on society but some of them make it hard to have any other impression.

Why are people dismissive of things like 'no blacks' restaurant signs, kicking black people out of their homes and herding them down the street with batons as shown in recent videos? Propaganda broadcasts blaming CV-19 on dirty black people.

Serious question? What behaviour (or lack of ... ?) are you seeing that is motivating you to assert this?

Why is that the country we should be 'friends' with?

Because back in the day when Bill Clinton was really rolling on job gutting free trade deals with the third world labor market -- China contributed to his campaign. Now that the Democrats are 100% on the side of job exporting corporations who have the good grace to fly a rainbow flag and post a black square (because meaningless symbolism costs nothing and if they can get those racist border walls torn down, nobody will make over $1/day ever again), they need to pay homage to those who paid megabucks (not some piddly prole's $26).

To be fair, our "friends" who are at least as brutish as China (Saudi Arabia, I'm looking at you) have been our stalwart "friends" for long, long, long before Trump was elected. Our foreign policy has been a mess for a long time, and honestly I'm not sure that Trump has really made it much worse. I don't really have much trust in the MSM these days. I've followed the trail through those sorts of articles before, and still never found a link to any actual Trump tweets. It's a citation circle where everyone agrees there are racist tweets because everyone says he is a racist tweeter.

I was sincere in wanting to read the alleged stream of racist tweets. Deathmonkey [soylentnews.org] finally provided a link to a tweet triplet where he tells three non-white senators to go back to their own countries if they don't like what he is doing. A single example is hardly a stream, but it looks like that's it for racist tweets.

                                  The actual text from Trump:

So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how. it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!

Not really that extreme for political rhetoric, and while racist it is targeted at three political opponents not at a race in general.

Heh. It would have been nice if you had actually read those links he had provided instead of going "I WANT TWEETS I WANT TWEETS*" because that exact question was not only answered, but it also answers your first question about 'what is racist' directly. There's a significant distinction between those four ladies and these two gentlemen and I'm not referring to their physical appearance or their gender, here. Well.. four people, if the other two had actually been involved this entire dynamic would be different with a very good chance of it ending in your favor... Fun. Anyway, do your homework. The short version is: There isn't a different standard that would be applied between the two groups.

Isn't having different standards for different races the very definition of racism?

We're not talking about statutory offenses, here. The direct answer to your question is 'no' because there isn't a different standard being applied, you'll need to update your hypothetical with more information, the current version of it does not provide a clear 'yes' or 'no' as to whether its racist. The answer you're aiming for is still no, but you'll need a better understanding what happened with Trump's targets before I can make that clear to you. The short version is there isn't a different standard between the two but how you phrase your hypothetical can change that.

Incidentally, because you have chosen this particular hill to die on instead of the nice clear-cut example I gave you, it's gonna be a lot harder to give you clarity because of an additional wrinkle: He said something he was specifically not supposed to say. He's the President, he has high standards to adhere to. At that point it's not even the words that matter. I'll put it to you this way: If I'm squeezing your throat, and you can't breath and are about to die, and I say "I love you!", that won't actually reduce my sentence. If, instead, I had only threatened you to the point that you needed a restraining order, and I never touched you, me saying "I love you" is nowhere near as powerless as it was in the last example. This, as a concept, is important to understand, especially since this example is so nuanced. Trump was a deplorable piece of shit before the 1st day of his Dumpster Fire administration. Setting that aside, one might say that the more extreme reactions to Trump were progressively more deranged the closer they got to his inauguration. However, within the first few minutes even, Trump started just justifying negative reactions. We've reached the inflection point now to where people that are a continuing to have positive reactions are reaching infinite derangement.

The only epidemiological model that stops transmission between communities and the WHO advised against it. Is the World Health Organization the *only possible* way to combat health problems that could adversely affect the US (never mind the world, apparently that doesn't matter to you)? No, of course not: It's easy to imagine other ways of organizing around the same goal.

Is the WHO probably useful? Absolutely. Their response, while not perfect by any means, substantially helped in lots of countries around the world. For instance, do you really think Cambodia had the resources to, on their own, limit their Covid-19 outbreak to under 200 people?

So why did the US not benefit from the work of the WHO? Because the president and his administration consistently refused their help. The WHO offered testing kits, research cooperation, protective equipment for medical personnel, and the US chose to take advantage of none of it because they were afraid that taking help from anybody else would look bad. And now the US administration is busy demanding that kids and teachers go back to in-person school in the fall despite knowing full well that that decision will cause kids, teachers, and parents to get infected and in some cases killed.

And why is the US withdrawing from the WHO? To preserve the illusion that the extent of the US outbreak of Covid-19, by far the worst in the world, is the fault of somebody other than the president and his administration. It's just the latest expression of that man's unofficial motto: The Buck Stops Somewhere Else.

Well, the WHO doesn't do that. They just output Chinese propaganda.

The WHO does not and never did have a secret sauce anyway. Some less corrupt organization will focus 100% on Ebola in the Congo instead of 50/50 some ebola work and some chinese propaganda work.

          I'm not seeing a problem.

Besides, if the Chinese are throwing money around to promote propaganda, I'm just saying, Reddit has excellent pr0n on /r/gonewild and so forth, whereas the WHO merely pretends to help with Ebola but they never seem to finish the job, probably because finishing the job would eliminate their positive PR story.

They were the ones who say "Cash is dangerous" because of covid, but "packages coming from china" are OK. They advocate whatever removal of freedom to fight an infection but no mention of quarantine for immigrants, who "are at risk of being discriminated" and "need an inclusive policy". With this kind of hypocrisy you need to even ask yourself whom they work for? Trump is acting nationalist and they are acting globalist, the move of Trump is obvious and the counter move, that is, releasing again some corona nasty variant from the labs, is the most likely response. Well, my state's director of public health quit after months of death threats against her and her family as well as guys regularly showing up to her house with AR-15's, and the cops doing absolutely nothing to protect her. Shortly after that, state policy on business closures and masks began to shift towards acting like Covid-19 didn't exist.

Say what you will about terrorism, but it apparently works.

The state in question is controlled by Republicans, she was appointed by the Republican governor, and was pushed out by this organized right-wing campaign of credible death threats prior to the BLM protests.

What she was doing that got the dudes with AR-15's mad at her was recommending that the governor follow the current advice from the WHO, international researchers, the CDC, county public health officials, university researchers in the state, and hospital systems at a time when all that information was in contradiction to what the president was saying. Which, when the governor followed that advice, did a fairly good although definitely not perfect job of containing the outbreak in his state.

But I guess you consider threatening to murder public officials to be perfectly OK so long as those officials disagree with you in some way.

Are you seriously trying to convice anyone here that your opinion of the WHO is based on carefull research, extensive reflexion and tought process ?

Like all your "opinions" that you regularly spew on these boards, your opinion of the WHO is based on one, and only one thing: What Trump says.

I can smell people like you from miles away: Dogmatic, binary, tribal, primitive. Unfortunately, you're not in the minority.

And please, don't blow what little dignity you have left by trying to deny it. It's like watching a four-year old with his mouth stained with chocolate saying "I didn't do it!". It's pathetic.

any system with an equivalent of "social credit" (quoted as it's newspeak appropriation of a valid monetary system concept, that used to be called social credit), CANNOT be a RES PUBLICA, because it's the very opposite.

Res publica: sovereign people (sovereign as a matter of fact, optionally underlined by a religion, not because of an arbitrarily drafted piece of paper called the constitution that builds rights out of itself) congregate to rule over interpersonal and common use resources regulations.
Social Credit: a cabal seizes power to regulate any public and potentially private aspect of the people's life, people are subjects.

Now, this isn't to blast China in particular. Democracy and The Republic are a nice concept, we should try it one of these days.

I've got a simple requirement. Admit Taiwan to the WHO.

First, you admit Taiwan to UN and recognize them as an independent country, at which point China would probably invade the island.

You really have to be a fucking idiot not to know these things. Taiwan is NOT A COUNTRY. It was never recognized as a country. It was always "China", either what you call Taiwan today or what you call the mainland. You may as well admit Alaska to WHO.

And this is the problem here. People are fucking politicizing health. WHO was NEVER a political organization. But it always had to kiss everyone's ass to do what it is suppose to do -- try to manage health threats, mostly through vaccination programs and providing help to the "shit hole countries" when they had some public heath problem so that this problem doesn't on your next plane. And WHO has been very, very successful at what they are doing. And if you are not a fucking idiot, you would have seen who.int calls for action about COVID since January. They had daily reports since beginning on JANUARY about it.
