Census Bureau director to resign amid criticism over data:

Facing criticism that he was acceding to President Donald Trump's demand to produce citizenship information at the expense of data quality, U.S. Census Bureau director Steven Dillingham said Monday that he planned to resign with the change in presidential administrations.

Dillingham said in a statement that he would resign on Wednesday, the day Trump leaves the White House and President-elect Joseph Biden takes office. Dillingham's term was supposed to be finished at the end of the year.

The Census Bureau director's departure comes as the statistical agency is crunching the numbers for the 2020 census, which will be used to determine how many congressional seats and Electoral College votes each state gets, as well as the distribution of $1.5 trillion in federal spending each year.

In his statement, Dillingham said he had been considering retiring earlier, but he had been persuaded at the time to stick around.

"But I must do now what I think is best," said Dillingham, 68. "Let me make it clear that under other circumstances I would be honored to serve President-Elect Biden just as I served the past five presidents."

[...] During Dillingham's tenure, the Trump administration unsuccessfully tried to put a citizenship question on the 2020 census questionnaire and named a handful of political appointees that statisticians and Democratic lawmakers worried would politicize the once-a-decade head count of every U.S. resident. The president also issued two directives that advocacy groups said were part of efforts to suppress the participation of minorities and immigrants in the 2020 census.

Doubtful he resigned over criticism of his data collection, Trump hired him. More likely he resigned because he saw the writing on the wall and knew it was time to move on. The Postmaster General will find himself in the same position as will many “political appointees”. SOP.

If Trump hired him, I don't understand this then:

Dr. Steven Dillingham was sworn in as the 25th Census Bureau Director on January 7, 2019.

Dillingham has more than 25 years of statistical, research, senior management, and legal experience in the federal government. Dillingham previously served as Director of the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. If he was a crony he probably would have bailed earlier, it sounds like combined with the minor scandal of the citizenship questions and the shame of being appointed by Trump he is probably leaving in order to not create unnecessary issues. Also he avoids getting dismissed if Biden wants to clean house, and since he was planning to retire anyway it is just easier. Seems like boilerplate politics.

So until we know, here's an idea: There are a bunch of lawsuits pending against the bureau, likely due to orange clown tinkering. This guy tried to push back and maybe didn't get it all done, since orange clown loaded that whole office with his idiot cocksuckers. He's 68 years old. You know when people retire? That's the thing: NO ONE KNOWS HOW MANY ILLEGAL ALIENS THERE ARE. When Clinton was president, they tossed around a figure of 20 million. We know that some years, more than a million came in. We know that some have gone home, deported, or chosen to go home, or whatever. We know that some have chosen to do the paperwork, and get naturalized. My own estimate is over 50 million currently in the US. But NO ONE KNOWS HOW MANY ILLEGAL ALIENS ARE HERE. It's all guess work.

Estimates of 12 million, or 20 million, or even 25 million are all preposterous. It was 20 million more than 20 years ago, and the influx has always been greater than any exodus since then. I'll go with 50 million, and be prepared to adjust that estimate upwards if necessary.

You accuse me of reading comprehension problems? Seriously? Let's review. First, you complained that NO ONE KNOWS how many are here in the country illegally. I countered that we might actually COUNT THEM using a census. Then you complained that "progressives" BLOCKED THEM from collecting the data. With me, so far? The missing piece is WHY people were leery about letting the Trump administration collect that data. Given that Trump's administration has literally separated children from their parents at the border and put them in cages, I think it is quite understandable why people might not want them collecting that data. So, then, how do we get that data? It seems to me that the crucial thing that needs to happen is that those who are here illegally TRUST the census takers with that kind of information; I can see how they might naturally be rather reluctant to answer a question about immigration status if they feel it would likely be used against therm. Without that trust I see little hope of getting an accurate head count. So, which is more important to you? Rounding up illegals, or getting an accurate head count? You have to choose just one.

Census takers should be trusted. No census taker has any authority to do anything, other than head counts.

The real problems are, number one, the border is as porous as a sponge. There are few penalties for employers hiring illegal aliens. Fix those two problems, most illegals will find their way back home pretty quickly.

The questions should have remained on the census. The census should have given us some idea how many illegals there are, where they are, and what kind of work they are doing.

Awwww, poor widdle number three countries! Maybe they should offer to enrich their best and brightest lives, enough to keep them home?

It's funny how people asking for legal concessions for immigrants never seem to mention laws that apply to legal citizens crossing the border or emigrating. If the free movement of people is a worthy goal then shouldn't the US enter into mutual agreements with other countries that allow people to move in both directions? Unilaterally granting a privlege to others for nothing in return seems like a poor bargain, regardless of which side one sees as the beneficiary.

Asking about immigration status on the census form would have been pointless though because it wouldn't have gotten an honest answer. It already was unnecessarily politicized and had too many questions that discouraged people from bothering with it, IMO.

How does Saudi Arabia handle illegal aliens? Or China? Or Russia? Australia? South Africa? Peru? Seriously, how many countries are there, that permit anyone and everyone to traipse across the border? How many of them give those illegal aliens free welfare, free housing, free everything? And, finally, how many of them allow those illegal aliens to vote?

I don't give a shit what the answers are! The Mother of Exiles and the Nazarine both command you to take them in!

Australia puts them back on a plane or boat if caught at a border. Otherwise, generally they are locked up in what amounts to low security prison. It can take years for applications to be processed. Usually this is due to the immigrants throwing away their documents on the way. Not kidding. There's a photo of passports floating in the water off of Christmas island.

      Like this:

While we waited to be rescued, the Iranians set about destroying their passports. “So they can’t deport you,” Farah told me. Clearly, though, the task also carried some symbolic weight. Rather than simply jettisoning them, the asylum seekers painstakingly ripped out each individual page, crumpled it into a ball, and tossed it to the wind. A pair of scissors was passed around. The burgundy covers, emblazoned with the Iranian coat of arms, were cut into tiny pieces. The work was accomplished with flair and relish. Only one man seemed hesitant. Moving closer, I saw that the passport he was disposing of was his son’s. When the scissors came his way, he carefully cut out the photo on the first page and slipped it in his wallet.
