    We could do a whole new interstate for $6.5 to $9.4 million per mile, depending on if you include engineering costs and if you get a good deal or not. For the Mexican border that would come to $12.9 to $18.7 billion.

    FYI, building an interstate is harder. It has to be smooth to prevent horrible THUMP THUMP THUMP as you travel. It has to stay smooth, year after year, despite traffic. It also has to be smooth on a larger scale; you can't just go right over steep hills and down into steep valleys.

    I disagree. Access and terrain in relation to the wall will be much more difficult by orders of magnitude. In many areas they will need to build roads just to get to where they are going to build the wall. And these roads have to be the length of the wall, and survive the brutal heat and heavy equipment that needs to transverse it regularly in order to build and maintain the wall.

    One key point about interstates vs a new wall design: we've done lots and lots of interstates, and made plenty of costly construction mistakes along the way - learned from those and refined the process.

    A wall on this scale is essentially a new construction process - there are unknown unknowns, there will be surprises and embarrassing, expensive mistakes made along the way. $15B, $20B, $50B - we can do any of those numbers, but it's a one-off - lots of jobs for a short time, then a massive wave of unemployment after it's done. What's the next project?

      We've done lots of walls in Iraq and Afghanistan. We can always ask Israel; they have a similar wall that is very effective.

      There is a contractor offering to do the wall for $11 billion.

      The next project is obvious. Lots of dangerous Muslims have moved to Canada. So after 2000 miles along Mexico, we do 3000 miles along Canada, and then maybe another 2500 up by Alaska.

      After that, we can go back and double up the walls.
