'Murdered' Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko turns up alive

A Russian journalist and critic of the Kremlin, reported to have been shot dead in Ukraine, showed up alive at a press conference on Wednesday to declare that his murder was faked by Ukrainian security services in an effort to foil an assassination plot against him.

In a stunning development, Arkady Babchenko, 41, walked into a room of journalists in Kiev who had been expecting to get an update on his murder.

He apologized to his wife Olechka -- who on Tuesday was reported to have found him bleeding to death at his apartment -- for the "hell" she had gone through. Ukrainian officials offered a jaw-dropping explanation for his so-called death -- to expose a Russian plot against him.

Script flipped.

The one unanswered question from all of those soaps is: How long can the same woman stay pregnant with the same baby?

My first wife watched soaps - she grew up with a mother and a house full of sisters, and those soaps were important to them. So, some old heifer had been pregnant for months before I left on a cruise. We all boarded ship, cast off, and went to the med, for nine long months of partying with the Russians during the Cold War. So, nine months later, we head home. First few days home, the wife turns on her soap, and there's this pregnant broad. I ask, "Is she pregnant AGAIN?" Wife answers, "No, she still hasn't had the baby!"

Christ on a crutch! That "suspension of disbelief" thing can definitely be taken too far.

There's no reason programs have to track time at the same rate they're broadcast. Only a couple of months might have passed in soapworld.

Unless I see them sleeping, I just assume it is still the same day. It makes the story much more interesting and the characters more vile.

You mean like standing on the surface of a planet and watching with the naked eye to see a Starkiller Base fire at another planetary body?

Or do you mean light sabers instead of good ol' blasters that work from a distance? (brought a knife to a gun fight)

They should really design a cannon that fires lightsabers. If lightsabers require a jedi to be effective, the cannon should fire jedi too.

Wait a second, lightsabers, the deathstars, and Starkiller Base all require kyber crystals... could it be that my lightsaber cannon already exists? It would make sense, all the deathstars were destroyed after the darth was killed or removed from their effective range.

Yes, exactly that sort of thing. Sometimes, that suspension can work, sometimes, it can't. For me, it fails more often than not. I suppose that's why I always preferred to read the book - my own imagination can fill in the details that Hollywood can't even understand.

It's also why I like the 'Expanse' series so much. They really worked hard for realism, and believability. The books are still better, though!

Yep. The Expanse is the best thing I think since Babylon 5.

If you haven't seen S03E08 "It Reaches Out," don't click here.

It is pretty good, although last night's episode (aired on SyFy in the US) strained credulity quite a bit, with Miller's reappearance as a weak recycling of the trope where Dave Bowman's consciousness is recreated for the monolith aliens from 2061: Odyssey Three [wikipedia.org]

I'm going to wait to read the series until after the show's run, as novels are always better than any TV/film adaptation. But it certainly is better than most of the crap on TV (Sci-Fi or otherwise).

            Thanks.

Just finished Season 2. I'll look forward to episode S03E08.

I noticed there are, I think, Eight books? And the synopsis of the first two books sounded remarkably like the two seasons I just watched.

Now, I just hope it actually goes somewhere and has an actual ending, like B5.

I hope they avoid the problems with having to change actors and alter the story due to actor changes.
