President Donald Trump vetoed a bill designed to block his emergency declaration at the Southern Border on Friday, in a ceremony at the White House.

“Today, I am vetoing this resolution,” Trump said. “Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution and I have the duty to veto it. And I’m very proud to veto it.”

        Brietbarf is not HitlerNews, it is HitlerNewsLite, or Alt-right, where "alt" means, a la USENET, "alternative", and not as it means in the original German "old", as in the "old right", that is, Nazis, but instead the "Neue recht", the "new right", which is nothing at all like the old right, except for the racism, misogyny, totalitarianism, and war and violence.

        So, yeah, right. Why is is on the front page of SoylentNews, unless we want to be seen as fucking Nazi supporting incel wannabe real men, who can't get a job, meet women, or code in Perl? Huh?

      Walls became obsolete the moment the ladder was invented.

      You'll admit that it's a little harder to run and hide, and evade the authorities while carrying a ladder. And, if you lose your ladder, you'll have to walk thirty miles back into town, and buy another from Ace Hardware. What - you thought the cops were going to leave your ladder lying out there in the sun? HELL NO! They're going to pick up the ladders, and sell them to Ace Hardware on this side of the border!

        After climbing over the wall, you don't need that ladder any more. So why would you still carry it around? I don't think US law enforcement can do anything on the Mexican side.

        Of course if you are trying to flee from the US, the situation is different …

        If you are carrying a ladder, you are south of the wall.

        US ICE officials are north of the wall. They can not see through a 30ft wall that is made of concrete.

        They can be 20 feet away from each other and never know about it.

          There aren't a lot of concrete walls. There aren't any concrete walls among the prototypes on display in San Diego, either.

      Get back to us when you figure out a single payer system which can be funded to the tune of single digit billions, and maybe.

        They'll just play a Trump card and take it from our bloated military budget.
        Don't blame me. Trump is setting the precedent with the backing of the Republican party.

        This let Trump free and use under 10 Billion dollars. Go ahead and delete a national emergency on healthcare, but it won't do anything.

        Single payer doesn't necessarily mean "free for everyone and the government foots the bill."

        Between private insurers and Medicare (and yes, Medicare recipients generally pay a monthly premium), hundreds of billions of dollars are paid in health insurance premiums every year.

        Having a single-payer program -- especially a non-for-profit program -- with low overhead (Medicare averages around 3%) can provide a vast array of benefits over the current (badly broken) system:
        1. A single set of prices/reimbursements for services;
        2. A strong negotiating position WRT drug prices and healthcare services reimbursement;
        3. Clearly defined benefits at various premium price points;
        4. Non-healthcare companies can get out of the insurance management business for their employees;
        5. All the money from premiums being sucked out in dividends, stock buybacks and acquisitions could actually go to providing services.

        That list took me about two minutes to come up with. And I'm not in the healthcare industry or a policy wonk.

        The upsides of a single-payer system are enormous.

        The downside is that the leeches who have been gaming the system to jack up prices, insurance premiums and their profits will need to find a new way to fleece the public. Then again, that's not really a downside, is it?

    The fact is that our lawmakers do not want to fix illegal immigration as they benefit from it... including/especially Donald Trump [nytimes.com].

    People say that immigrants do the labor jobs that no one else wants. I call Bullshit!!! They do the jobs that people do not want to be underpaid to do. Why work in the hot sun picking fruits and sowing fields having you arms ripped up by the undergrowth when for the same wage (or sometimes more) you can work in an air-conditioned environment at Mc Donalds?

    Businesses always cry for cheap labor and illegal immigration is the way for that to happen. (Well, it how it happens for local labor jobs that can't be outsourced overseas; and outsourcing is just a similar method of supplying labor at cheaper than market rates.) There have been studies done on labor that show only a small percentage of jobs going to lower paid foreign labor significantly suppresses wages. The fear of losing your job to cheap labor makes the people employed in that sector less likely to ask for raises or expect significant wage increases.

    If you want to fix illegal immigration fine the companies that employ them $50,000 per illegal per year that it was found to happen. (with a minimum of 1 year) Then actually enforce the law. When the jobs are gone, the illegal immigration problem will be gone as well.
