Fox News (among many other outlets[*]) is reporting: Biden wins presidency, Trump denied second term in White House:

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has defeated President Trump, denying him a second term after a bitter campaign and dramatic, prolonged vote count in battleground states that sparked a flurry of lawsuits.

The Fox News Decision Desk projected Saturday that Biden will win the state of Nevada and the commonwealth of Pennsylvania, giving the former vice president the electoral votes he needs to win the White House.

[...] "I am honored and humbled by the trust the American people have placed in me and in Vice President-elect Harris," Biden said in a statement. "In the face of unprecedented obstacles, a record number of Americans voted. Proving once again, that democracy beats deep in the heart of America."

He added: "With the campaign over, it's time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation."

Biden's campaign announced that the president-elect and Harris, his running mate, will speak at an event in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware at 8 p.m. ET.

Joseph Biden would become the 46th President of the US; U.S. Senator Kamala Harris of California, the 49th Vice President.

IMPORTANT: There are still votes to be counted, a recount has been requested in one state, and there are numerous court challenges launched by the Trump campaign. Further, nothing is official until the actual vote by the Electoral College.

That's the obvious consequence of only having two viable candidates. If your third-party candidate was polling at 20% instead of 2%, or was at least able to make it onto the debate stage with the two clowns, then the conversation might be different. As that did not happen, your vote had no chance of being cast for the winner. It was wasted.

Orange Man proved the way forward for fringe candidates. Hijack the nomination of one of the two major parties. Then the machine has to work for you.

It’s more a consequence of not having ranked choice voting in most states.

Ranked choice allows exprsssing true preferences without “throwing your vote away” if you don’t pick your more-likely-to-win second choice. Maine knows.

In the meantime, that vote was still wasted.

In the meantime, any vote for a major party is wasted. As the benefactors of the FPP system, they will never ever seek to change it.
But yes, votes for third parties are also wasted -- under a voting system whose purpose and effect is to provide the illusion of popular choice while keeping the powerful in power, every vote is wasted.

I voted for the fist time in 20 years. I abstain because my vote does not matter. I hate both, but this election i hated trump TOTALLY. the lizard man was better. if i had the option to not vote for one of other people i hate, i would. but realistically my state (FL) has too many undead, so my vote does not mater, even here. i voted and failed.

Your does count! I been voting 45 years for third parties. We need a true third party to prenet the dip shits of blocking each other. A true third party makes the houses say 45/45/10. So any bill will require a compromise so back to centerist goverment vs socialism and fascism.

I loved Ross Perot with up to 25% draw. Then he went crazy.

I am republican. But this is first year I voted straight democrat, The Trump-icans Fascists need to be gone.

I would consider a wasted vote as a vote for a candidate I don't want to win. Trump and Biden are both terrible candidates. Why would I vote for either one of them?

A third party vote is definitely not, "wasted".

Some states have a requirement of x% votes in the presidential election to qualify for the ballot for statewide elections. And, third parties every once in a while win in these statewide races (but only if they are on the ballot).

And, by not voting for either the corrupt center-right to right-wing Democrats or the very corrupt batshit crazy far-right/fascist Republicans, you are sending the message that you do not agree with the direction these parties are going. If enough people wouldn't waste their votes on these two corrupt parties, we might see positive change in this country as their duopoly crumbles.

I sometimes wish that we did our elections the way Australia does theirs (IIRC)--everybody is legally *required* to vote, but there's a "None of the Above" option on the ballot.

Would be interesting to see what percentage "Fuck All These Jokers" would get.

Its definitely not wasted if voting in California. CA was for sure a Biden win.

In that case, a voter can help increase the viability of the 3rd parties and not affect
    the outcome.

The wasted vote argument only applies to close races.
