  • Don't complain about lack of options. You've got to pick a few when you do multiple choice. Those are the breaks.
  • Feel free to suggest poll ideas if you're feeling creative. I'd strongly suggest reading the past polls first.
  • This whole thing is wildly inaccurate. Rounding errors, ballot stuffers, dynamic IPs, firewalls. If you're using these numbers to do anything important, you're insane.

This is my preference as well. I'm sure I'll sleep for some portion of the trip; I don't know that I can keep myself constructively busy for 10,000 years. That said, there are millions of books I haven't read yet, and I wouldn't mind the opportunity to catch up on that.

On the other hand, imagine if you were awake for the entire trip and didn't lose your mind entirely. What kind of hobbies might one take up? My inner child always wanted a pet dinosaur. My shipmates might wake up to discover I've spent a few centuries selectively breeding reptiles to look like tiny dog-sized apatosaurus. :) <3

I see that the majority of the votes so far are for sleeping the entire trip. Be careful what you wish for.

There's a creepy episode of Star Trek: Voyager called The Thaw, where a few people are in stasis on an interstellar ship but have their minds kept active in a simulated world. There's a single virtual world and everyone on the ship is connected to the computer running that world. The people on the ship have the ability to end the stasis when they land but have chosen not to do so. The computer was designed to read the thoughts of the people on board, create a world based on their thoughts, and show the people on the ship what they want to see. The people on the ship had a range of emotions including fear about the success of their mission and of what their new world would be like. The computer read this emotion and created a very creepy clown as a manifestation of the fear. Basically it produced a positive feedback loop where the clown was terrifying and made the people more afraid, which made the clown more powerful and controlling.

I'll go a step further and say that a central computer reading everyone's thoughts and creating a virtual world is a somewhat Borg-like. Take the Federation ideals of incorporating new worlds into the Federation, amplify that to the extreme (like the fear), and you end up with something that resembles the Borg.

I'm not sure I'd want to go into stasis for a long journey if it's anything like The Thaw. I'd rather be awake and fully aware of what's going on around me.

It doesn't have to be like the Borg.

It could be something like the Matrix...

Did you know that the first Matrix was designed to be a perfect human world? Where none suffered, where everyone would be happy. It was a disaster. No one would accept the program. Entire crops were lost. Some believed we lacked the programming language to describe your perfect world. But I believe that, as a species, human beings define their reality through suffering and misery. The perfect world was a dream that your primitive cerebrum kept trying to wake up from.

But where it turns out the "heroes"are faster than the AIs when they succeed in waking up since they're no longer in stasis... It's easier to simulate a very complicated universe to a high detail if only needs to run at a zillionth of the "normal speed". Of course some of the AIs are also trying to "wake up and escape".

I notice that, so far, votes seem to be for the 1st generation or the final arrival generation. Nobody wants to be in the middle generations that are born, live out their boring existence in space, and then die? Should those middle-gen'ers have loyalty to the original purpose of the mission which their ancestors selected, and stop wishing for a normal life and being so selfish? If the middle gen's don't do their job, there might not be a final generation to arrive at the destination.

Unforeseeable things could happen. Such as a major devastating conflict over the proper condiments on a burger.

This could affect the voting for the desirability of being the final arrival generation.

The point is to get there. If I'm on a generation ship, I want to be the generation that arrives at the destination. THAT is when all the fun starts!

Of course, what I really, really want, is to find those wormholes that would make generation ships unnecessary. Spend some time at this end, traveling to the wormhole, spend some time at the other end navigating away from the other end of the wormhole, with little if any time spent in the wormhole. As a first gen, you know all the good thing you are missing on the planet you are leaving. Many people find that lack difficult to deal with.

As a final gen, you are cast into an unknown world where anything could upset the applecart. Some people like this challenge, others find it difficult to deal with.

The middle gen have a stable environment, and some people are very satisfied with stability. Others find it boring and difficult to deal with.

It looks like a way of manufacturing the appropriate personality type and coping mechanisms is needed. In a standard human population there is a mixture, but for this specialised journey, you need a different mix at each stage. That could be difficult to achieve.

The middle stages might be appropriate for the kind of people who like routine and sit around and meditate - some orders of monks, nuns and suchlike.

Voted "middle generation" after a rather complicated thought process.

While I find the poll interesting, I'm not sure everyone is thinking things through properly.
If *I* were setting up a generational ship, I would ensure a luxurious life for people up to a couple of months after arrival; after that "not my problem".
In particular, as a society, you want to ensure that the middle generations don't fuck up the stuff needed by the arrival generation, so you keep them happy.
The ones that do land? They only have to deal with normal human cravings for mates and stuff, they don't live with the envy of "those who will be free to walk under a real sky" (or whatever nonsense the middle people emo types will come up with; you know the normal "I have food and comfort, I'm going to invent a reason to be miserable anyway" 1% types from today).

Somewhat related: only the first generation of a generational ship has a choice, and they can only choose between "(1) stay where you are" and "(2) risk space travel/insanity for a few generations of your descendants in the hope that ultimately your memory lives on on another planet". Nobody can choose to be a middle generation or a last generation.

somewhat related: in the long-term any generational ship will be a stand-alone colony in itself, and most likely not everyone will want to get off.
if it's not self-sustaining, it won't work, and if it is self-sustaining, people can decide to remain there.

(obviously the "self-sustaining" part comes with a need to resupply deuterium or whatever every N generations)

I guess it depends a lot on whether or not the physics of space travel has any surprises left to us.
I'm intrigued by the concept of a construction that can last forever, but in practice it will probably be an asteroid with machinery that gets rebuilt every few hundred years.

So you have just told me that it was also a sock-puppet. That is why those accounts are being blocked - but they are not banned. I am waiting for the response to the emails that they will have each received.

My god, you are an idiot, janrinok! Do all cultural references escape you so easily? Even the British ones? Of course there is no "Spinal Tap Woodherd", because it is a reference to the Mockumentary, This is Spinal Tap [imdb.com], featuring the exploding drummer, and amps that went all the way up to eleven! And if, perchance, there is now a SpinalTapWoodherd, or a Woodherd11, consider that you might, by the bowels of Christ, be mistaken, because you have gotten the post hoc, ergo hoc fallacy backwards, which begs the question.

That's not a common reference here in SN, linking an account name to Spinal Tap's amps. But I'm pretty sure I've seen it before. Where was it?

Oh yeah, it was https://soylentnews.org/comments.pl?sid=47376&cid=1216118 [soylentnews.org]. Mockingbird posted the same thing about FYN 11.

The original post in this thread is signed by aristarchus and talks about Woodherd 4's account being closed. Woodherd 4's journal contains the text "8D8298/49792" as a reference number to a second account being closed. If we flip that last number around, we get the user ID of the account that was closed, which was 29794. Woodherd 4 says the second closed account that he tried to create and received the email for was "Anti-Racist Soylentil." Let's see what account 29794 was, shall we?

                  Visit https://soylentnews.org/users.pl?uid=29794 [soylentnews.org] to see what account 29794 is. It's not "Anti-Racist Soylentil." It's FYN 112.

You might say that the original post being signed by aristarchus doesn't mean it was posted by aristarchus. I'll also point out that https://soylentnews.org/comments.pl?cid=149437&sid=6262 shows that the aristarchus account made a very similar Spinal Tap reference to Mockingbird's comment and your comment.

Now, we have multiple connections between you, the aristarchus account, the Mockingbird account, the Woodherd accounts, and the FYN accounts.

It seems like only the sleep or "birthed and raised as a robot" options don't have serious ethical implications. The sleepers all have a choice. Creating cyborgs may or may not be ethical; but if you assume it is, then they probably live long enough to take the entire journey, and also have choice--assuming that we really transferred consciousness and didn't simply create a really elaborate urn. That in and of itself is something we may never know, so I think if you want to visit the stars ethically, you have to get crackin' on that long term sleep capability.

First of all we're already the middle generations of an interstellar trip. The Sun has a proper motion relative to the local group and the local group has a proper motion relative to the galaxy and the galaxy has a proper motion relative to the average of the overall universe. So we're going places, just in a sort of Friday night drunken meander, or at least we have no idea of any intentional planned motion. Its probable that most / some / damn near all the members of a generational ship or RingWorld (TM) or whatever would have no idea or care where they're going or even that they're going at all.

Secondly, probably 95% of the population is already implementing the 'sleep thru it' NPC mode. Don't think unless you're forced to think and even then don't think anyway and just F stuff up. The calends was a feature of the Roman calendar, but it was not included in the Greek calendar. Consequently, to postpone something ad Kalendas Graecas ("until the Greek calends") wεἰςas a colloquial expression for postponing something forever. This phrase survived for many centuries in Greek (Greek: τὰς ἑλληνικάς καλένδας) and in the Romance languages (Spanish: hasta las calendas griegas; Italian: alle calende greche; French: aux calendes grecques; Romanian: la calendele grecești; Portuguese: às calendas gregas ; etc.).

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_calendar [wikipedia.org]

So much for the "Ides of March", which English speakers only know through Shakespeare. We are into the Calends of July, beware them, Soylentils! From thence the font of your alt-right noise shall cease, and it's plumbing be blocked, and the universe finally cleansed just this little bit.

Now, no doubt, some will say "εἰς τὰς ἑλληνικάς καλένδας", in Greek, with all the proper diacritials. And perhaps they are right. Maybe the mysterious "kolie" will take over from NCommander, and janusrinok will continue his Pisistratusian rule over the dungpile that SN has become. Or, perhaps, it will be revealed that "kolie" is none other than the Musk himself, or an agent for Solos, or the CEO of Chik'f-ing-a". All these things are possible. But the Calends portends.
