  • Don't complain about lack of options. You've got to pick a few when you do multiple choice. Those are the breaks.
  • Feel free to suggest poll ideas if you're feeling creative. I'd strongly suggest reading the past polls first.
  • This whole thing is wildly inaccurate. Rounding errors, ballot stuffers, dynamic IPs, firewalls. If you're using these numbers to do anything important, you're insane.

I definitely mint boots on the ground when I submitted that pole.

Due to the immensity of such an accomplishment, I wanted to allow for it possibly taking decades to accomplish once we make that a national priority, if ever.

We won't get back to Luna before World War III (which has already begun) knocks most of the world's nations back down the civilizational slope a peg or two. It will take another thousand years to climb back up it to where humans again have the knowledge and technology to travel to the moon. And then it will again be a stunt to glorify whichever group makes it, rather than part of a sustained settlement effort.

It's simply too difficult and too expensive to send humans into space, because you have to create bubbles of Earth's environment to take with them, in order to survive. Much easier to send the machine "intelligences" (be they sentient or not) which can be designed for the existing conditions in space. We might be able to use the machines to create small bases on Luna and/or Mars for humans, and then send humans there to live in the prebuilt bases, but the idea that large numbers of humans will be able to move out from the Solar system will most likely just be a pipe dream.

Who needs World War III to hold us back a millennium and change? We've already got Boeing, FFS! :-)

More seriously, I think it'll be a toss up between the US (using a SpaceX launch vehicle) and China sometime around 2030, and for exactly the same reasons as last time; two superpowers engaged in a dick-measuring contest purely for the kudos of seeing who can get there first. It's not like there's much of anything other than kudos that boots on the ground can achieve that robots can't at this point, unless you're seriously laying the foundations of a permanent lunar base for things like mining Helium-3, building telescopes on the far side, and the like.

Hopefully, the rest of us will at least get some side benefits from the technological advances developed to make it happen though.

Without SpaceX, I doubt we'd have any hope for returning to the Moon in the next decade or two. Certainly not more than one or two trips and done. With SpaceX, reusable rockets, and Starship (assuming they're successful) we could see humans on the Moon by 2030 or maybe a bit later. It would be epic to see humans going to the Moon and maybe even Mars in my life time.

Elon Musk is unhinged, and he is not a nice man to work for. But to give him his due, he has put a large boot up the backsides of many industries. He has taken the last 70 years of space technology, for example, and refined it, with some government subsidies, to make it more of a commercial operation.

On his own, I don't think he'll see us to the Moon or Mars. He's making quite a mess of Starship and he hasn't got a proper solution to the problem of radiation on a Mars trip.

He is motivated, and he is showing everyone else what you can achieve if you cast off the old cobwebs, which is good. I think he's going to run out of money before he gets anywhere near boots on Mars, though.

We've maintained the ISS for quite a while... a Lunar base could run a similar (yes, more expensive) program serving a very similar agenda, tritium exports and dust plagued telescopes not really required. Note that, while it has grown, the ISS is nothing like the big, empty orbiting wheels of the 2001 movie(s), and I would expect a lunar base to be similarly cramped and crowded - operated as much for "political cooperation" as any science being performed.

A sustainable society built on biofuels and renewables just won't have the spare capacity.

There's still wood. It's the obvious easy fuel here. As to the easy metals, humanity has spent enormous resources to dig up those metals, refine them to astounding purity, and place them throughout cities and dumps. Those metals will be easier to get at than when they were in the ground as raw ore. Aluminum is a particularly obvious example. Not only is it in a form that ancient humans never could achieve, it can be used to melt steel.

Also, solar, wind, and water will still be here. It'll be different, but it won't be that challenging.

EROEI is what counts for energy, and fossils fuels had an extremely high one. Even then society killed a lot of miners getting that coal out. You can't do that now.

As for metals, if the dumps are so superior why are we still mining raw ores? It's because the dumps are better for piecemeal recovery and use. You can't drive the industry needed to get to space on that sort of distributed re-use.

Getting a civilization to space requires a concentrated effort that won't be achievable again if we become a society living on recycled metals and sustainable solar energy. We will probably still launch satellites, but we won't be mining the asteroids and setting up colonies.

I bet you could find groups now that would favour taxing SpaceX into oblivion and using the money to "help the poor". They will get louder and more influential if things get tougher.

As for metals, if the dumps are so superior why are we still mining raw ores?

They're typically in populated areas. That means little space for things like tailings or leach ponds. It also means significant restrictions on pollution and noise.

Sure. Already we see people angsting over the threat to the pristine "environment" of the Moon or the danger that someone somewhere might make money in space. This is balanced by these people having zero ability to do anything in space. So anyone who manages to get up there will be playing a different ball game.

Just like aristarchus wrote here perhaps? https://soylentnews.org/~aristarchus/journal/5388 [soylentnews.org]

"Karma's a bitch, ain't it? You think "reverse discrimination" against white people is unjust, and unfair? You ain't seen nothing yet. Lynch whitey, it is the only way to end racism in America, because then everyone would have gone through the same history. Oh, wait. Enslave whitey? Genocide white? Whitey exclusion acts and no dogs or whiteys allowed? Possibilities are endless. And you white privilege types were worried about monetary reparations?"

He wrote that in his own journal.... but I suppose he will try to deny that too. He isn't quoting somebody else, he is simply expressing his own views.

When he comes to slander he started with Ethanol-Fueled on 11 Oct 2014 and quickly followed with TMB. And since then he has verbally attacked chromas, FatPhil, Runaway, janrinok, khallow, Runaway1956, FNord666, Bytram, chromas, VLM, hemocyanin, Martyb, NCommander, takyon, jmorris, cmn32480, butthurt, and others. The reason for this is because he cannot win arguments so he has to resort to insulting people. Which goes to show what an obnoxious person he actually is and how weak his arguments are.

He first forecast the demise of SoylentNews in 2019 and he has repeatedly done so many times since. But the only person who is trying to kill the site is aristarchus himself. He has stated that fact in his journals and elsewhere too.

He makes claims that he cannot substantiate and repeatedly lies about things that he claims are 'facts'. All of this is in his journals - they are still viewable by anyone who wishes to look at them. He has not been censored, he has not had his freedom of speech removed. The reason that his IPs appear to be banned is because he repeatedly uses them for spamming - and there is software that takes care of that automatically.

More guns for ignorant morans, so that when they finally realize how stupid they have been, and how badly they have been played by New York grifting real estate fraudsters, they can execute the stand your ground protocol, of freedom, and one in the brainpan."

Mostly all accurate according to Runaway's own commentary. His ignorance and stupidity is well documented, and even though he says he did not vote for the NY fraudster he defends the criminal at every opportunity. Runaway's desire for politically motivated terrorism is well documented as well and his journals echo the rightwing nationalist propaganda he blindly follows.

Why else bother with every trolling insult post aristarchus makes

aristarchus is banned from the site. Each post that makes should be moderated as spam, iaw the "Decision - aristarchus [soylentnews.org]" published on 02 February 2022 by this site regarding his doxxing:

                      (1) Permanent Ban

                      • 'aristarchus' will face a full and permanent ban from this community.
                      • His account(s) will be completely disabled.
                      • Any further posting he may make to the site will be treated as Spam.

In this instance the purpose is to disrupt his access to the site iaw with the Policy Document [soylentnews.org] issued in 2014 which specifically states:

There are, of course, technical difficulties associated with effectively banning an individual but a block of his personal IPs for each computer system as and when they are identified might be considered as a reasonable action.

In this instance we know that this is being successful because he complains frequently that his IP addresses are being blocked.

In addition, anyone can be moderated by a community member for posting Spam which is defined here [soylentnews.org]:

If you are unsure of whether a comment is spam or not, don't use the spam mod. Here are some examples of spam:

                      • Proper spam. Anything whose primary purpose is advertisement (unless somehow relevant to the discussion/article).
                      • HOSTS/GNAA/etc... type posts. Recurring, useless annoyances we're all familiar with.
                      • Posts so offtopic and lacking value to even be a troll that they can't be called anything else. See here, here or here for example.
                      • Repeating the same thing over and over. This includes blockquoting entire comments without adding anything substantial to them.

aristarchus has never been banned for expressing his views, nor have you. There is no reason why another community member should be banned simply because you do not like the views he or she holds. This is not support that we give to a specific community member but something that is afforded to every community member. We are not sympathetic to any particular political viewpoint. If you wish the rules to be changed then draft something and we can put it to the community for a vote. The Policy Document will be rewritten when the new corporation is created.

However, occasionally, individuals will not express their views relating to a story but will employ offensive and/or abusive behaviour towards an individual. This is not in the spirit of the site and a graduated response will be adopted to anyone who employs such behaviour in their comments.

If you do not understand what the Policy Document says you can always ask someone to explain it to you.

Argue against what is being said - NOT who is saying it.

You are attacking people - not the things that they say. You just don't understand that YOU are the problem. You are arguing about what 'Runway1956' does, or what I or other community members do. It is not the people that we are here to discuss. It is ideas, opinions, and points of view regarding the topics under discussion. You have chosen to make your comments under the topic of "When will humans return to the moon".

There is no lack of transparency - the rules that are being enforced have been published and I have brought them to your attention. You don't like them. Hard luck. Either change them or find a site that better suits your own beliefs and opinions.

The rules quite clearly say that you should not be attacking the person - yet still you do it. Just as you did with your earlier account. Your latest series of comments are simply attacks on me - and I simply don't care what you say because you are not saying anything constructive. You haven't changed - but you want the site to change. Then do something about it instead of crying on here that it isn't what you want. Volunteer and do something the change the site rather than repeat the same accusations again and again.

The rules also state that people are free to express their opinions - whether you like them or not. I am not going to moderate people to suit your feelings, not am I about to ban them because you disagree with them. You need to sort yourself out before you start telling others what they should be doing.

yes calls for violence should also be banned.

So why didn't you argue for aristarchus to be banned in 2015 when he called for "Lynch Whitey"? Where did you insist that someone be banned for encouraging others to take a baseball bat to beat some sense into a community member? These are 2 examples of 'calls for violence' that you were quite happy to accept because, presumably, you agreed with them.

The doxxing of runaway was a shit move that I agree deserved punishment.

However, runaway definitely bragged about his guns and not caring who might know where he lived, so the lesson from doxxing had a little hilarity to it. Typical rightwingers never care about doxxing doctors or leftwing politicians and judges because their privilege insulates them then suddenly they care when things get real. Combined with the free speech ethos used to defend posting of rightwing violence and hatred the ban for doxxing is quite hypocritical. I still support the ban of doxxers and violence promoting turds, but the situation has pulled the curtain back on SN.

All I am pointing out is that such a pattern of behavior does not match normal site management, even less so for speech you say you find detestable. Why defend against arguments not even made in the thread? Why defend accurate if insulting descriptions of a bigoted liar? Why cry about political bias when the statements made by Runaway1956 are blatantly bigoted and verifiably false?

Your actions and words are your own, and going above and beyond to defend violent racists against mean words is completely unnecessary and something you do not do for other users. I am not on the Governance Committee. I have already formally announced that decision, so I will not be taking part in the new Board.

I am also a basic editor but whether that continues will depend on the policy decisions that the new Board, which will be elected by the community, decides.

I am not the only person moderating repetitive, off-topic comments as spam when they appear from ACs in various polls and journals. This poll was all about putting men back on the moon - please clarify how your rants against me fit into the topic. If you want things to change you will have to do something to change them, but you seem to be unable to think of anything constructive. If you want me to go all you have to do is step up and volunteer to fill my place. But do it quickly, because when the new site is created you will have to stand for election if you want to fill an administrative post.

I am not your 'buddy'. Whatever gave you that idea?

The truth is quite the opposite. Since 2021 we have removed over 800 sock puppet accounts from the full spectrum of different views and opinions. I was not an Admin before 2021 so I cannot be blamed for whatever went before that time.

                                                            ban tor users.

I do not know which connections are via TOR or by VPN unless you tell me, nor do I care. They can be used anywhere on the site. There is a slightly modified procedure for creating new accounts if you use secure email but that is to prevent the creation of new sock puppet accounts. Nevertheless, new genuine accounts are created regularly using secure email addresses. All that is required is that you contact the administration by email - by secure email is perfectly acceptable.

How you connect to the site and from where is of no interest to me. Stopping spam abuse in discussions on the site is, however, part of my remit.

Show me where moderation is being used unfairly, or where anyone is trying to control the narrative. The problem is those who abuse other people's journals or Polls to have off-topic rants or ignore the site's pollcies despite the fact that they have personally chosen to be ACs which restricts their access to the site.

I surmise that ari prefers the use of VPNs but that you are a TOR user - based entirely on what both of you have written in your comments.

One sign of age-related dementia is the sharing of spurious internet quotes.

Socrates’ ‘slander becomes the tool of the loser’ quote is false [aap.com.au]

Lies and falsehoods become the tools of a looser. Including slandering Socrates, and philosophy in general.

The quote reads: “When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser.”

The quote was posted by an Australian user to the group Michael-angel. Truth Seeker. The group’s aims are “Seeking Truth and Awareness in the areas of 5G, Anarchy, the Ruling Elite, Personal Sovereignty, OBE, Lucid Dreaming & NDE’s, Artificial Intelligence, Basic Universal Income, the Hero’s Journey, Psychedelics, Spirituality, Hidden History & Relationships”.

The post generated 10 reactions and four shares. The purported Socrates quote has been widely shared on Facebook, including the groups Mind Core which has more than 3.3 million followers and The Intellectualist, a society and culture page with more than 373,000 followers.

            Seems legit, not!

Professor Rick Benitez from the University of Sydney’s Department of Philosophy and Department of Classics and Ancient History told AAP FactCheck in a statement the quote “does not appear in any of the direct evidence we have for Socrates”.

Prof Benitez said the quote was not found in the dialogues of Plato or the works of Xenophon that feature Socrates.

“It bears a vague resemblance to some things that Plato’s Socrates says in the Gorgias about the different methods of the philosopher and the rhetorician, but there is no direct reference to losing a debate, or to the losers using slander. There is only the general claim that philosophers use arguments and rhetoricians use persuasion (slander, not mentioned, being one technique of persuasion).”

Prof Benitez did a check of Plato’s uses of διαβολή (diabolē) and λοιδορία (loidoria) – the two most common Ancient Greek words for slander – and there was “nothing approaching” the purported quote in “anything Plato’s Socrates says”.

According to fact checking units Snopes, Politifact, Metabunk, Truth or Fiction, and CheckYourFact, the quote does not appear anywhere in Socrates’ speeches or writings. Truth or Fiction claimed the first iteration of the quote being attributed to Socrates was in May 2006 from a personal website. Another reference was found in April 2008 on the book review website, Goodreads.
            .
            The Verdict

Based on this evidence, AAP FactCheck found the attribution of the quote to Socrates to be false.

It amazes me that so many allegedly “educated” people have fallen so quickly and so hard for a fraudulent fabrication of such laughable proportions. The very idea that a gigantic ball of rock happens to orbit our planet, showing itself in neat, four-week cycles — with the same side facing us all the time — is ludicrous. Furthermore, it is an insult to common sense and a damnable affront to intellectual honesty and integrity. That people actually believe it is evidence that the liberals have wrested the last vestiges of control of our public school system from decent, God-fearing Americans (as if any further evidence was needed! Daddy’s Roommate? God Almighty!)

Documentaries such as Enemy of the State have accurately portrayed the elaborate, byzantine network of surveillance satellites that the liberals have sent into space to spy on law-abiding Americans. Equipped with technology developed by Handgun Control, Inc., these satellites have the ability to detect firearms from hundreds of kilometers up. That’s right, neighbors .. the next time you’re out in the backyard exercising your Second Amendment rights, the liberals will see it! These satellites are sensitive enough to tell the difference between a Colt .45 and a .38 Special! And when they detect you with a firearm, their computers cross-reference the address to figure out your name, and then an enormous database housed at Berkeley is updated with information about you.

Of course, this all works fine during the day, but what about at night? Even the liberals can’t control the rotation of the Earth to prevent nightfall from setting in (only Joshua was able to ask for that particular favor!) That’s where the “moon” comes in. Powered by nuclear reactors, the “moon” is nothing more than an enormous balloon, emitting trillions of candlepower of gun-revealing light. Piloted by key members of the liberal community, the “moon” is strategically moved across the country, pointing out those who dare to make use of their God-given rights at night!

Yes, I know this probably sounds paranoid and preposterous, but consider this. Despite what the revisionist historians tell you, there is no mention of the “moon” anywhere in literature or historical documents — anywhere — before 1950. That is when it was initially launched. When President Josef Kennedy, at the State of the Union address, proclaimed “We choose to go to the moon”, he may as well have said “We choose to go to the weather balloon.” The subsequent faking of a “moon” landing on national TV was the first step in a long history of the erosion of our constitutional rights by leftists in this country. No longer can we hide from our government when the sun goes down.
